Simplicissimus could be loosely described as liberal–bourgeois and is known for its cartoons of high artistic quality. The main source corpus is made up of 291 of these cartoons featuring junior officers, published in the magazine during the period. I aim to analyze how the satirists picture the lieutenant, how he is or possibly is not ridiculed, and what the answers might tell us about the limits and possibilities of satire in Wilhelmine Germany. In addition to being an officer, the “Prussian lieutenant” was an exceedingly popular stereotype in his time. Contemporaries and later historians of the German Empire alike have interpreted and applied this stereotype to various ends. I approach the character of the lieutenant through Roland Barthes’ semiotic concept of the myth. Inspired by new military history and the study of men and masculinities, I also analyze him as a particular image of man that the satirists seek to ridicule by gendered means. In the cartoons of Simplicissimus, the lieutenant is almost inevitably depicted as a member of the East Elbian landowning Junker nobility, at his most typical serving in an exclusive Guard cavalry regiment. His colleagues of common birth are all but unseen. The lieutenant concentrates on enjoying his life of ease and luxury in a privileged position and hardly corresponds to the lofty ideals of his profession. His authority and possible appeal stem from his position as an officer rather than personal qualities: he is physically weak and mentally restricted to his narrow sphere of life. However, he is also represented as a ladies’ man, in erotic situations and even advertisements, which can hardly be judged unsympathetic. as regards war and violence, his passivity occasionally causes him to join with the satirists in condemning aggressive politics such as the colonial enterprise. In the more menacing, symbolic cartoons, he appears as an unambiguous shorthand for militarism and coercion. The mythical lieutenant crosses paths with real-life ones when Simplicissimus satirists comment on contemporary scandals. In conjunction with these cases in particular, it is readily seen that the protagonist of the lieutenant cartoons is no guarantee for truth. Some of the cartoons considered are sympathetic or purely entertaining. Following the logic of the myth, the character of the Guard lieutenant may always hide behind the fact that he does not represent anyone in particular. The officer cartoons did upset contemporary authorities, but evidence suggests they were enjoyed by officers themselves. Pääasiallinen aineisto koostuu kaikkiaan 291 pilapiirroksesta, jotka ovat ilmestyneet lehdessä kyseisellä aikavälillä. Pyrin selvittämään, millaisena luutnantin hahmo piirroksissa näyttäytyy, miten hänestä tehdään tai mahdollisesti ei tehdä pilkkaa sekä mitä vastaukset kertovat satiirin rajoista ja vaikutusmahdollisuuksista vilhelmiinisessä Saksassa. “Preussilainen luutnantti” on käsitykseni mukaan paitsi upseeri myös aikanaan suosittu stereotyyppinen hahmo, jolle sekä aikalaiset että myöhempi Saksan keisarikuntaa käsittelevä historiankirjoitus ovat antaneet erilaisia merkityksiä ja tulkintoja. Tätä hahmoa lähestyn Roland Barthesin semioottisen myyttikäsityksen kautta. Uuden sotahistorian ja miestutkimuksen inspiroimana käsittelen luutnanttia myös mieskuvana, jonka satiirikot pyrkivät saattamaan naurunalaiseksi sukupuolitetuin keinoin. Simplicissimus-lehdessä luutnantti on käytännössä poikkeuksetta Elben itäpuolisen junkkeriaateliston tyhmänylpeä edustaja, tyypillisimmillään hienossa kaartin ratsuväkirykmentissä. Hänen aatelittomia kollegoitaan ei juuri tavata. Luutnantti keskittyy viettämään makeaa elämää etuoikeutetun asemansa turvin eikä juuri vastaa ammattinsa korkeita ihanteita. Luutnantin arvovalta ja mahdollinen vetovoima ovat kokonaan upseerinarvon seurausta: hän on ruumiillisesti heikko, tyhmä ja auttamattoman kapea-alainen. Toisinaan luutnantti taas näyttäytyy naistenmiehenä, eroottissävytteisten piirrosten ja jopa mainosten sankarina, jota on vaikea luonnehtia epäsympaattiseksi. Suhteessa sotaan ja väkivaltaan luutnantin aristokraattinen kylmäkiskoisuus on paikoin positiivinen piirre: hän ei innostu esimerkiksi aggressiivisesta siirtomaapolitiikasta, jota vastaan Simplicissimus yleensäkin asettuu. Uhkaavammissa symbolisissa piirroksissa luutnantti näyttäytyy yksiselitteisesti pakkovallan ja militarismin edustajana, jona hänet on toisinaan haluttukin nähdä. Myyttinen luutnantti kohtaa tosielämän luutnantit, kun lehden piirtäjät ottavat kantaa eräisiin aikakautensa skandaaleihin. Erityisesti skandaalitapausten yhteydessä käy ilmi, että luutnattipiirrosten päähenkilöllä ei välttämättä ole paljonkaan tekemistä arkitodellisuuden kanssa. Osa luutnanttikuvista on sympaattisia tai puhtaasti viihdyttäviä. Myytin logiikkaa mukaillen kaartinluutnantin hahmo piiloutuu tarvittaessa sen tosiseikan taakse, että hän ei varsinaisesti esitä ketään. Luutnanttipiirrokset ovat ärsyttäneet auktoriteetteja, mutta toisaalta nauttineet suosiota pilkan kohteen eli upseerien keskuudessa. It focuses on the discourses to which these novels refer in order to shed light on the consequences and implications of Red-Green politics for the subjectification of individuals during this time. When Gerhard Schröder replaced Helmut Kohl in 1998 as Chancellor of Germany, there was a noticeable shift towards neoliberal policies that has since received much attention in scholarly studies and public-political debates about its impact on Germany’s economy, social security system, political party system, and institutional structure. Taking a new approach to understanding the politics of the Red-Green coalition, I argue that its impact is noticeable not only in the political sphere, but that this impact also permeates all levels of society, in particular concepts of selfhood, and that it has found its way into contemporary literary works. As my particular interest lies in investigating how these literary works process the consequences and implications of Red-Green politics for the subjectification of individuals during this time, the novels I selected situate themselves explicitly within the Red-Green era mostly through references to some of its most well-known labour market measures, namely the Ich-AG, the Mittelstandsoffensive, and employability training programs.

Shattering Fragility: Illness, Suicide, and Refusal in Fin-De-Siècle Viennese Literature Abstract How fragile is the femme fragile and what does it mean to shatter her fragility? Can there be resistance or even strength in fragility, which would make it, in turn, capable of shattering? I propose that the fragility embodied by young women in fin-de-siècle Vienna harbored an intentionality that signaled refusal. A confluence of factors, including psychoanalysis and hysteria, created spaces for the fragile to find a voice. These bourgeois women occupied a liminal zone between increased access to opportunities, both educational and political, and traditional gender expectations in the home. Although in the late nineteenth century the femme fragile arose as a literary and artistic type who embodied a wan, ethereal beauty marked by delicacy and a passivity that made her more object than authoritative subject, there were signs that illness and suicide could be effectively employed to reject societal mores.

Indeed, Prussia's special position within the Second German Empire (Kaiserreich) established a certain identity between Prussia and Germany, an image that has lingered and powerfully shaped both scholarly and popular understandings of Germany. Yet, as the essays in Modern Prussian History, 1830-1947 argue, this image has not done justice to our appreciation either of the Prussian or the German past. Modern Prussian History is the second volume in a two-part reappraisal of Prussian history edited by Philip Dwyer. Its twelve essays take a topical rather than a comprehensive approach to the period's major phases: monarchy, empire, republic, NS-state. In choosing the themes, Dwyer has Selected topics that not only promote a reappraisal of the relationship between Prussia and Germany but also highlight current research trends. The book begins with two introductory essays. First, Dwyer establishes the framework for the volume, presents its major themes, and summarizes the essays' findings. Then, Stefan Berger discusses the image of Prussia in German historiography. Much of this story is well known to students of German history.

    THOMAS MANN'S INTERPRETATIONS OF DER TOD IN VENEDIG AND TMEIR RELIABILITY by Herbert Lehnert One of the last comments by Thomas Mann on his Der Tod in Venedig is found in a letter to Franz H. Mautner, the author of a valuable study on the Greek elements in Mann's st0ry.l In this letter Mann claimed his memory to be the source of an Odyssey quotation in the text. Homer's verses, he writes, had been well preserved in his memory from his days as a boy. There is ample evidence, however, that the source for the Homer quotation in the text was Erwin Rohde's Psyche, a book from which Mann also took other material for Der Tod in Venedig.2 Why did he not name Rohde's book as a source of Der Tod in Venedig? Psyche is a most respectable book, written in a beautiful style rarely found among German scholars, and it is still recognized as the standard work on the topic, namely the Greek beliefs concerning the existence of the soul after death. Could he have forgotten the rather elaborate process, that we can reconstruct, of not only reading the book, but also pencil-marking some passages, excerpting some of these, and then using them in the story? This is quite possible after forty years, although he still owned the book when living in his last home in Switzerland, and placed it in his library among works on mythology which he used for Joseph. He had mentioned his early knowledge of classical legends much earlier in "Kinderspiele" (1904).
