Spotlight On: Bruce Blitman Began volunteering: July 2014 Department: Dog P.A.L. (Petting, Attention and Love) Pets at home: Eddie, a wonderful little ten-year-old “puggat” – pug/rat terrier mix Favorite part of volunteering: “I have volunteered as a P.A.L., providing petting, affection and love, for the past two and a half years. I have greatly enjoyed my weekly interaction with the dogs. Every Tuesday, for three or four hours, I get to play in the kennels with all kinds of dogs -- different breeds, ages, sizes and personalities. This has been great fun and is almost like a form of therapy for myself and the dogs. I turn off my cell phone, unplug, relax and just focus on enjoying these wonderful dogs. Each is special and unique. I have also enjoyed my interaction with my fellow P.A.L. volunteers and other volunteers, as well as the staff, all of whom are friendly, kind and compassionate.” What the animals say: “We love it when Bruce comes walking in to the kennels! It means we’re about to have a wonderful session of pats, scratches behind the ears, kind words, playtime and cuddles – all of which makes us happier and less stressed. And that makes us more adoptable! Bruce is our hero!” Bruce Blitman

Bruce, a Pembroke Pines attorney, recently went a few steps above and beyond his usual routine in helping the animals by holding a donation drive at his place of business to help gather items from our shelter wish list. Bruce’s property management company, Adler Realty Services, graciously agreed to host and sponsor this event to celebrate his 25th anniversary as a tenant. Everyone in the building was notified of this special event and encouraged to donate. Bruce collected almost $250 in donations, as well as lots of toys, snacks, shoe boxes, towels, and blankets. It was a wonderful opportunity for the residences to get to know one another and support a good cause. Education Volunteer Dawn Fifield also stopped by with some furry companions to add to the fun.

T-Hank Goodness for Hank! Written By Selena V. White A couple of months ago, my family and I adopted a harrier pointer mix named Hank. He had been returned to the Humane Society two or three times due to destructive A Message from the Heart behavior. In addition, Hank had special needs, due to the fact This letter came to us from 12-year-old Selena White, whose family he was heartworm positive. adopted Hank in October of 2016. Our latest note from Selena’s When Hank arrived at our home, things almost immediately family tells us that Hank is coming along well with his behavior got out of hand. The dog raided our pantry and closets, training; their love and patience are paying off. relieved himself on the tile and carpet, knocked over garbage cans, refused to move on his walks, and started sunbathing when it was 90 degrees out. This behavior, coupled with the heartworm, made taking care of Hank extremely difficult. One might wonder why our family would want to keep a destructive dog like this. The answer is simple; we love him. Hank is super fun, silly, loving, and sweet. He loves belly rubs, “Puppy Park,” and rawhide bones. I always tell people that Hank is 67 pounds of pure love. My family and I decided there was no way we were going to return Hank to the Humane Society. We were going to take things day by day and train him. If you adopt a dog from the humane society, give him/her time to adjust to its new surroundings. If a pet is destructive, train him/her; but be sure to have patience. Seek out help in the community. There are many places you can contact. Don’t return your dog to the Humane Society. The animal needs you; just like Hank needs us.

Dear HSBC, he kitten that you named Harriet (and we renamed Ms. Saffron) has settled in pretty well. She adores us and loves her older sister very much; often too Tmuch for Ms. Sasha’s liking but their relations continue to improve. Though she uses the scratch post regularly, she has never, not once, extended a claw in play or anger; a feature that I consider highly desirable in a cat. When we brought her home she used to run and hide, seemingly in terror, if I (but not Sonia) spoke to her sharply. Now however, though she has learned the meaning of NO, she takes me on pretty much as little as she does Sonia. Like our Siamese, she runs to greet us, follows us around and talks or cries for attention. She sleeps with us but does not cuddle as closely as have all of our Siamese. But she loves us and we love her. Thank you for letting us have her. Love, Ms. Sasha & Ms. Saffron Sonia & Jolyon King

Dear Humane Society, came in Saturday morning and adopted Stowic the Guinea pig from the center. I thought you'd like to see him in his new home. He loves romaine lettuce, Iparsley and tomatoes. He takes advantage of the hiding place under the shelf where he can feel safe. I spent most of the weekend nearby so I could keep a close eye on him. He's now at home, where I'm guessing he's going to be happy for years to come. Thank you for bringing him into my life. He's adorable! Respectfully, James Quivey Wilton Manors Stowic
