Marc Garneau, MP, PC Minister of Transport 330 Sparks Street Ottawa, ON K1A 0N5 Dear Minister, Four Canadian pilots’ unions have spent a large amount of money to create a colourful website with many fine graphics, bullet points and an earnest call for support from the public. Boiled down, it’s got a clear message that the current fatigue regulations are unsafe, and must be changed. Canadians and Parliamentarians alike are being steamrollered. And it’s time that all the facts came out. We are a coalition of nine regional and national aviation associations, representing commercial air operators from across the country who are trying to push back against the biased information propagated by the airline pilots’ unions. We represent the aircraft operators who get lost in the noise – commercial aircraft operators flying where scheduled service does not, regional and northern services providing lifelines to hundreds of communities and hamlets, search and rescue, medevac and more. We land on gravel, ice and water, as well as paved runways, with our turboprops, helicopters and jets. We go where people need us, when they need us. We are part of the infrastructure that makes Canada, with its vast size and small population, a major trading nation and the envy of the world. We are not ultra long-haul scheduled airlines. The pilots’ unions have lost sight of this. In order to make a point with dubious facts they have tried to convince you that any commercial flight requires the same type of fatigue rules as long-haul international flights, with their oft-repeated mantra “a pilot is a pilot is a pilot”. -

Media Series - TV Teacher Notes Television in the Global Age Teachers’ Notes The resources are intended to support teachers delivering on the new AS and A level specifications. They have been created based on the assumption that many teachers will already have some experience of teaching Media Studies and therefore have been pitched at a level which takes this into consideration. Other resources are readily available which outline e.g. technical and visual codes and how to apply these. There is overlap between the different areas of the theoretical framework and the various contexts, and a “text-out” teaching structure may offer opportunities for a more holistic approach. Slides are adaptable to use with your students. Explanatory notes for teachers/suggestions for teaching are in the Teachers’ Notes. The resources are intended to offer guidance only and are by no means exhaustive. It is expected that teachers will subsequently research and use their own materials and teaching strategies within their delivery. Television as an industry has changed dramatically since its inception. Digital technologies and other external factors have led to changes in production, distribution, the increasingly global nature of television and the ways in which audiences consume texts. It is expected that students will require teacher-led delivery which outlines these changes, but the focus of delivery will differ dependent on texts chosen. Why the Inimitable Sarah Paulson Is the Future Of
he won an Emmy, SAG Award and Golden Globe for her bravura performance as Marcia Clark in last year’s FX miniseries, The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, but it took Sarah Paulson almost another year to confirm what the TV industry really thinks about her acting chops. Earlier this year, her longtime collaborator and O.J. executive producer Ryan Murphy offered the actress the lead in Ratched, an origin story he is executive producing that focuses on Nurse Ratched, the Siconic, sadistic nurse from the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Murphy shopped the project around to networks, offering a package for the first time that included his frequent muse Paulson attached as star and producer. “That was very exciting and also very scary, because I thought, oh God, what if they take this out, and people are like, ‘No thanks, we’re good. We don’t need a Sarah Paulson show,’” says Paulson. “Thankfully, it all worked out very well.” In the wake of last year’s most acclaimed TV performance, everyone—TV networks and movie studios alike—wants to be in business with Paulson.
