Why Does One Not 'Walk'?
Aum Sri Sai Ram Why does one not ‘walk’? Virendra Sehwag slashes hard and Taufiq Umar spills the offering at the slips. Mistake : By the Fielder. Beneficiary: Batsman. Sachin Tendulkar caught bat-pad but appeal turned down. Mistake: By the Umpire. Beneficiary: Batsman. These two seemingly different scenarios have more similarities and lessons than what meet our eyes. A moment’s reflection on the above two instances perhaps will have more than mere academic value, for as it so often happens in sports as in life, it is one’s reactions to the happenings on the field that characterize him / her more accurately than even the wealth of knowledge, and possibly talent too, that one is supposed to possess on the game itself. Firstly, in both the cases it is the batsmen who stand to gain. Secondly, it is the fielding team that is left with heartburns as a result. Perhaps the only difference in the above two scenarios is that the fault lies on different ends. Why then do we not complain in the first case, but take a moral high ground, in the latter, and condemn the beneficiary? What is so special in the second case that catapults us on to a pedestal and hands us a judge’s gavel to brand the beneficiary? How is it that we condemn the person who committed the mistake in the former but overlook, or sometimes even sympathize with, the person who had not lived up to his professional commitment, in the latter? In fact, in the latter case we readily denounce the beneficiary. -

Hero, Celebrity and Icon: Sachin Tendulkar and Indian Public Culture*
13 PRASHANT KIDAMBI Hero, celebrity and icon: Sachin Tendulkar and Indian public culture* When he completed twenty years in international cricket in November 2009, Sachin Tendulkar reaffi rmed his status as one of the greatest public icons of post-independence India. Ever since his genius was fi rst glimpsed on the maidans of Bombay over two decades ago, Tendulkar has reigned supreme as a sporting idol, his popularity cutting across the boundaries of caste, class, gender, region and religion. Curiously, however, there has been relatively little scholarly scrutiny of the Tendulkar phenomenon and what it might tell us about the changing nature of Indian public culture. This chapter attempts to understand, and account for, Sachin Tendulkar’s enduring hold over the Indian public imagination by exploring three facets of his remarkable career. The fi rst section considers, in historical context, Tendulkar as ‘hero’: someone who displays superlative skills and performs spectacular feats. An analysis of popular sporting fi gures needs to reckon with the ways in which their attributes and accomplishments on the fi eld of play are crucial to their elevation as heroes. However, the analytical prism of the ‘hero’ is insuffi cient in itself in accounting for Tendulkar’s fame. The second section suggests that Tendulkar’s celebrity is an attendant effect of the intensifi ed relationship between cricket, television and money in con- temporary India. At the same time, the immense power and resonance of Tendulkar’s image within Indian society makes him more than a frothy con- fection of the sport–media nexus. The fi nal section argues that as a national icon Tendulkar embodies the aspirations of millions of Indians. -

Chatbol, a Chatbot for the Spanish “La Liga”
Chatbol, a chatbot for the Spanish “La Liga” Carlos Segura, Alex` Palau, Jordi Luque, Marta R. Costa-Jussa` and Rafael E Banchs Abstract This work describes the development of a social chatbot for the football domain. The chatbot, named chatbol, aims at answering a wide variety of questions related to the Spanish football league “La Liga”. Chatbol is deployed as a Slack client for text-based input interaction with users. One of the main Chatbol’s compo- nents, a NLU block, is trained to extract the intents and associated entities related to user’s questions about football players, teams, trainers and fixtures. The information for the entities is obtained by making sparql queries to Wikidata site in real time. Then, the retrieved data is used to update the specific chatbot responses. As a fall- back strategy, a retrieval-based conversational engine is incorporated to the chatbot system. It allows for a wider variety and freedom of responses, still football oriented, for the case when the NLU module was unable to reply with high confidence to the user. The retrieval-based response database is composed of real conversations col- lected both from a IRC football channel and from football-related excerpts picked up across movie captions, extracted from the OpenSubtitles database. Mueller Slams Hat-Trick As Bayern Extend Lead
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2014 SPORTS Suarez inspires Barca revival MADRID: Two assists from Luis Suarez inspired Barcelona to come from behind and snap a two- game losing streak in La Liga with a 2-1 win at Almeria yesterday. Suarez had started the game on the bench alongside Neymar as Barca boss Luis Enrique made five changes from the side that defeated Ajax 2-0 in midweek. However, both men were called into action at half-time after Thievy Bifouma had fired Almeria into the lead eight minutes before the break. Suarez squared for Neymar to level the scores 18 minutes from time and his cross then teed up Jordi Alba to seal the three points nine minutes later. Victory takes Barca a point ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, but Los Blancos can reclaim top spot when they host Rayo Vallecano late yesterday. Yet, despite his team’s reaction after the break, Enrique was less than impressed by their display. “The second-half was better for the ambition and attitude shown by the players rather than for good football,” he said. “To have a good sea- son, though, you have to win even when you SPAIN: Barcelona’s Neymar (left) duels for the ball against Almeria’s Joaquin Navarro (right) don’t play well in games like today.” during a Spanish La Liga soccer match. —AP Enrique’s decision to make a host of changes handed Pedro Rodriguez and Munir El Haddadi a Jonathan Soriano released Thievy and he raced low shot just beyond Martinez’s far post.
