“Jewel of ”, known as is the highest civilian award of the country. Bharat Ratna award is conferred for exceptional service to the nation in various fields such as science, arts, litera- ture, and in recognition of public services of the highest order. Bharat Ratna award can be granted posthumously and since its establishment 7 awards were granted posthumously. This award is one of the precious awards given in the country which is given to any person irrespective of race, occupation, position, or gender. History of Bharat Ratna award

 Bharat Ratna award was established by the former on 2nd January 1954.  The concept of awarding this award posthumously was not there in the original statue declared in Jan- uary 1954 but later it got declared posthumously in January 1966 statue of this prestigious award.  Bharat Ratna award was awarded first to , Sir CV Raman, Chakravarti Ra- jagopalachari in 1954.  In the history of sports, is the first sportsperson and the youngest Bharat Ratna awardee.

About Bharat Ratna Award

 The medallion of the Bharat Ratna award is cast in bronze.  The medallion of the Bharat Ratna award is designed to side the leaf of a peepal tree with sunburst in the center and Bharat Ratna is engraved underneath it.  On the backside of the medallion, the emblem of India is embossed and Satyamev Jayate is inscribed in Devanagari script.  Bharat Ratna material is worn around the neck using a white ribbon only. The Bharat Ratna award does not carry any monetary endowment.

 In 2015, former Prime Minister and founder of Madan Mohan Malviya were given the award by the Modi Government.  Deshmukh and Hazarika were selected for the award posthumously. Pranab Mukherjee accepted this honor greatfully and said, “ I have always said and I repeat, that I have got more from the people of our great country than I have given to them,” in his post on .  Prime Minister in Twitter post said that, Pranab Mukherjee's has served the nation selflessly and tirelessly for decades, leaving a strong imprint on the nation’s growth trajectory.  He also said that Bhupen Hazarika’s songs radiates the message of justice, harmony and brotherhood and that ’s stellar contribution towards rural development showed the way for a new paradigm of empowering those living in our villages.  After these three recipients, 48 eminent people have been conferred the Bharat Ratna award so far.
