THE FIRST FORTY YEARS INTRODUCTION by Susan Stamberg Shiny little platters. Not even five inches across. How could they possibly contain the soundtrack of four decades? How could the phone calls, the encounters, the danger, the desperation, the exhilaration and big, big laughs from two score years be compressed onto a handful of CDs? If you’ve lived with NPR, as so many of us have for so many years, you’ll be astonished at how many of these reports and conversations and reveries you remember—or how many come back to you (like familiar songs) after hearing just a few seconds of sound. And you’ll be amazed by how much you’ve missed—loyal as you are, you were too busy that day, or too distracted, or out of town, or giving birth (guess that falls under the “too distracted” category). Many of you have integrated NPR into your daily lives; you feel personally connected with it. NPR has gotten you through some fairly dramatic moments. Not just important historical events, but personal moments as well. I’ve been told that a woman’s terror during a CAT scan was tamed by the voice of Ira Flatow on Science Friday being piped into the dreaded scanner tube. So much of life is here. War, from the horrors of Vietnam to the brutalities that evanescent medium—they came to life, then disappeared. Now, of Iraq. Politics, from the intrigue of Watergate to the drama of the Anita on these CDs, all the extraordinary people and places and sounds Hill-Clarence Thomas controversy. -

Credit markets were nearing paralysis. Companies began to lay off workers in droves and were forced to put off capital investments. Individual consumers were being denied loans for mortgages and college tuition. Adam Davidson: I recorded this at the Ritz Carlton in lower Manhattan. It’s a black tie dinner, just a few weeks ago. Ira Glass: And you, by the way, are NPR’s International Business and Economics correspondent. Adam Davidson: That’s right. I was there for my job. They’re giving out awards for all these financial securities, including the one that nearly brought down the global financial system. You know, the whole sub prime mortgage crisis. Jim Finkel: This guy is a legend. He’s a granddaddy of our industry. Adam Davidson: I’m sitting at this dinner with Jim Finkel. He’s kind of nervous because he’s up for CDO of the Year for the CDO he created, Monterrey. Now, the CDO, that’s what we’re talking about, that’s the financial instrument that was central to this global credit crisis we’re in. Ira Glass: And they’re giving awards for this? These guys are giving each other awards for doing that? Adam Davidson: Let me just say, they’re aware that there’s a certain irony, giving awards to the instrument that almost destroyed the world’s economy. They did consider canceling this year but it’s been a really tough year, it’s been really gloomy for them. Jim Finkel: Honestly, I know this sounds...I was happy to see there were no major suicides, people weren’t jumping off bridges, there weren’t personal disasters. -

Working at TED, as you might guess, many of us have strong opinions about this. Beyond the podcasts we all love: This American Life, Radiolab, The Moth, Serial, and of course our own TED Radio Hour — here’s our list of 45 you might not know you needed to listen to right this minute. Previously I worked as a Publicity Assistant at Penguin Random House. I really love podcasts--these days, friends come to me for book recommendations and podcast recommendations. I’ve produced a podcast episode with The Heart and, lately, I’ve been trying to get my feet wet with tape syncs and transcription work. I’m also working on my own independent short-form podcast series which will hopefully consist of eight episodes. The first podcast episode that really showed me what the form can do was probably The Heart’s “Movies In Your Head” (back in 2014!). Lately though, I really love Rough Translation and their episode “American Surrogate” has stayed with me. ANNA PHELAN My name is Anna Phelan and I work at TED, launching and marketing our original podcasts, and providing editorial guidance on the TED Radio Hour, of which the actual production is done by NPR. I’m originally from Ireland, where my focus was on literature and publishing. I’m drawn to audio storytelling because of its more intimate, experiential nature. I’m excited to delve into the trenches with production which I’m still new to, and ultimately I’d like to work on bringing more literary fiction to the world of podcasting. His photograph was a photograph of my face. His Twitter name was @jon_ronson. His most recent tweet, which appeared as I stared in surprise at his timeline, read: ‘Going home. Gotta get the recipe for a huge plate of guarana and mussel in a bap with mayonnaise :D #yummy.’ ‘Who are you?‘ I tweeted him. ‘Watching #Seinfeld. I would love a big plate of celeriac, grouper and sour cream kebab with lemongrass #foodie,’ he tweeted. I didn’t know what to do. The next morning I checked @jon_ronson’s timeline before I checked my own. In the night he had tweeted, ‘I’m dreaming something about #time and #cock.’ He had twenty followers. Some were people I knew from real life, who were probably wondering why I’d suddenly become so passionate about fusion cooking and candid about dreaming about cock. I did some digging. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] How podcasting is changing the audio storytelling genre Abstract This article explores the impact of the post-2014 podcast resurgence on nonfictional audio storytelling formats. The mpe irical study comprises themed commentary by five significant US, European and Australian editors who commission and produce audio documentaries and features for broadcast and/or podcast. The article provides insights into the changing role played by public broadcasters, the growth of independent podcast networks and the perceived differences between radio and podcasting as a mode of delivering and receiving audio content. Of particular significance is the belief of senior commissioning editors that podcasting is fomenting a new, more informal, genre of audio narrative feature centred on a strong relationship between host and listener, with content that is 'talkier' and less crafted. The SU audio storytelling podcast sector is growing fast, and much of it has links to a public media ethos, but how to resource it without compromising its editorial independence remains unresolved. Photo: Roberto Westbrook/Blend Images/Corbis In 2001, Steve Jobs announced the original iPod, a music player that would make it possible for people to carry their entire album collections in their pockets. Over the next few years, a genre of narrative audio that took the device’s name — “podcasting” — became a thriving mini-industry. There were podcasts about politics, sports, literature, comedy. There were podcasts that sounded like NPR, and ones that sounded like Rush Limbaugh. Many lacked polish, but most had a kind of energy to them that suited their audiences well. And then, sometime around 2009 or 2010, the podcast scene seemed to wither. The stalwarts (“This American Life,” “Radiolab”) stayed around at the top of the iTunes charts, but there wasn’t much else happening. Download numbers fell. Interest waned. People moved on to online video and streaming music services as a way to pass the time. Today, a very different problem exists: There are too many great podcasts to keep up with. There’s “Serial,” the true-crime drama hosted by “This American Life” producer Sarah Koenig. There’s “99% Invisible,” a design-themed podcast hosted by Roman Mars that has run several mega-successful Kickstarter campaigns. There’s “StartUp,” another product of the public-radio diaspora, which tells the episodic story of NPR veteran Alex Blumberg’s attempt to create a podcasting business. Then there are the celebrities: Ice T, Snooki from Jersey Shore, Stone Cold Steve Austin — podcasters all.
