BY KEN HUNT

The end of summer is almost here and the fall will be fast approaching. Summer is usually the time of traveling, spending long days enjoying friends and family, and sometimes, not really paying attention to our eating habits. So, I thought I’d give you a jump-start on wrapping up your summer and give you some healthy eating tips to get ready for fall to drop those few pounds that might have crept on when the sun was shining.

Tip #1: Eat breakfast. A quick and protein-filled breakfast can start raring your metabolism for the rest of the day. Got 5 minutes? Cook up an egg with some lean ham and put it on a whole wheat wrap. This wrap is completely portable! If cook- ing is just not going to happen, then a smoothie is the very best thing to do. Blend yogurt, fresh fruit and a little ice, and you’re good to go. You can also take out the yogurt and replace it with a tablespoon of natural peanut butter.

Tip #2: Enjoy what the end of summer has to offer. There are 2 really great and incredible nutritious foods in season right now: berries and tomatoes. Eating food at its peak is both economically smart and ensuring that you will have the very best tasting produce. There are endless healthy recipes that utilize berries and tomatoes. Here is one I love: Quick Cucumber and Tomato Salad. Dice 1 large cucumber into 1 inch cubes, dice 2 large tomatoes into 1 inch cubes, chop ¼ of 1 medium red onion, place together in a large bowl. Vinaigrette: 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, 1 tablespoon of champagne vinegar, salt and pepper to taste. Whisk together, and drizzle over veggies. You can enjoy this alone or on top of a bed of mixed baby greens.

Tip # 3: You don't need to keep your summer workout schedule. One of the things I hear from gym members is their schedule doesn't permit them to go to the gym as much, so they abandon any and all workouts until the following sum- mer. Instead of stopping all together, set a realistic schedule for your fall workouts. Although it may not be as often or as long as your previous schedule, it's important to maintain some form of workout. By simply maintaining, you can guarantee fewer pounds gained over the course of a few months.

Tip #4: Walk, walk, walk! Can't make it to the gym? Now that summer is over, the weather in most parts of the country becomes ideal for walking. Walking one hour can burn anywhere from 150 to 450 calories, depending on your size and how fast you walk. Over the course of just a few months, those calories add up! If possible, I suggest you bring an iPod or a radio headset.

Tip #5: Join a class. Joining a class at your gym is a great way to not only get Model: Jose Baptista Phillips Photographer: West yourself out of the house and working out but many times you'll meet others who are motivated to workout. This is good because often times agreeing to meet at class will increase your odds of getting you in the class.

By following these simple guidelines, you can assure yourself of not only a healthier body but a healthier attitude as well.

ocated on the sunny Bay of Banderas on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, most of Puerto Vallarta’s modern history has been that of a premier resort... and more. The city has been off and running ever since it was put on the map in the 1960s as the setting for Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and their notorious extramarital affair during the filming ofNight of the Iguana.

Why break with tradition?

This November, from the 21st to 25th — the week of Thanksgiving, so you know you’ll have some vacation time on hand — the city hosts Vallarta Fever, five fun-filled days of fun-filled gays and who knows how many affairs. The action is spread out over the city, its hotels, and its beaches for the week; this is by no means an event contained to a few dark corners. Puerto Vallarta is a big place, but the hard and fast rule of where to seen and be seen depends on the sun: if it’s up, the action is sure to be at the gay stretch of sand, the famous Lido Beach. If the moon is up, time to head to Club Ma- ñana, Club Papi, and Freedom, each fueled by a veritable who’s-who of international power-DJs: , Tony Moran, Brett Henrichsen and Mexico’s own Cristian Leyva are all on tap to shake Puerto Vallarta down to its foundations.

Highlights? That’s a tough one; this fiesta effectively puts Puerto Vallarta on the world party-circuit. However, in a bit of rare foresight, planners thought ahead and evenly- spaced each event throughout the week with very little overlap. Night owls addicted to unabated acoustic shockwaves should set their sights on Friday the 23rd when Tony Moran pounds out the dance tracks at Club Mañana at the Fever’s Latin take on the (properly-hued dress required) and also Saturday the 24th, which is when Hector Fonseca, the official remixer of Lady Gaga, , and Beyoncé, blasts off at the 10 p.m. - 6 a.m. Latin Fever Party, officially “the” party of the week. Alternatively, sun-worshippers should head off to the two noontime beach parties at Lido Beach on the 23rd and 24th. It all wraps up on the 25th with the Adios Vallarta! Closing Party with a “special guest DJ” that will not be revealed until the actual day arrives. Coy, but you gotta dig the suspense, provided you’re still standing after a week of non-stop lip-smacking Latin love.

t’s not easy for a gay bar to build the kind of legendary reputation that Score has. It takes time, persistence, creativity and the right kind of talent. Since the iconic club opened its doors in the late 90’s it’s been remod- eled, re-vamped and hosted some of the most famous DJs and recording acts in the world. When they’re not busy overseeing Score’s daily operations, Score owners Billy Kemp and Luis Morera are constantly on the lookout for new talent to wow their guests with. Their stage has welcomed world-famous recording artists like Gloria Estefan and Lady Gaga and their dance floors have been turned out time and time again by world-renowned DJs like Abel, , Manny Lehman, and Alyson Calagna, just to name a few. It was Score that made Lincoln Road the destination for tricks and treats and one of South Beach’s most popular attractions during the bar’s annual Hal- loween bash. And every year while the rest of us are still trying to decide which tank top we’re going to peel off at the next White, Winter or Pride Party, Score is putting the finishing touches on their biggest event of the weekend. But they don’t just wait for holidays or a circuit weekend to throw a party. Whether it’s a tribute to Tribal, a divine homage to our Divas or something to please the size queen in all of us, Score serves it up right EVERY weekend. I myself have been lucky enough to be a part of the Score family as a former resident and special guest DJ and it’s been one of the highlights of my career. Not only did I get to work with some of the sexiest boys and girls in the biz, but I got to meet some of the DJs that have inspired me ever since the first time I set foot on their dance floor.

Image Credit: Dale Stine I can still remember the excitement I felt the night of Score’s grand opening. The former Kremlin space (remember that?) had closed down and was under renovations for months. We were all dying to see what the new neighbors were going to bring to the local gay nightlife. Once my friends and I made it through the endless line and were finally inside, we knew we were someplace special. While most other clubs at the time were dark spaces with just a couple of bars and a dance floor; Score exploded with pops of color, high-tech lighting, artistic design and a very well-hung gold statue welcoming all the boys and girls to South Beach’s new playground. Over the years, the space has seen its share of facelifts to keep things fresh and keep up with changing times. The Billy Kemp and Luis Morera dance floor has been widened, bathrooms and spaces remodeled, bars have been relocated (two or three times), a performance stage was built (and moved), a video wall installed and that infamous gold statue is no longer “hung” in the rafters. While Score has also had its fair share of stumbles on the way, it has still managed to keep its doors open and serve up one of the best gay experiences to locals and tourists alike.

As the countdown to Score’s big 14 draws closer, excitement over the festivities has been building for both the staff and the community. How will Score top last year’s over-the-top celebration? Who will be there? What kind of surprises will we see? To get those answers I went right to Billy and Luis, the guys who made Score what it is today and have spent the last few months planning an anniversary party we’ll never forget.

his year's crop of Miami Spice menus is as diverse as the list of restaurants themselves. Foodies rejoice! There is a lot to choose from the yearly Miami Spice program that brings you prix fixe menus for lunch and dinner at some of the best restaurants in town. This year you can choose between “luxury dining” ($23 for lunch and $39 for dinner) and “fine dining” ($19 for lunch and $33 for dinner). However, a word of caution, just because a restaurant is well-known for its delicious food, it does not mean that you should run out and eat their Miami Spice menu.

A couple of my favorite restaurants in town have actually put forth some very disappointing menu alternatives for Miami Spice that are not even worth trying. My recommendation is to visit the Miami Spice website (www.ilovemiamispice.com) to look at the menus for each restaurant for either lunch or dinner. You may end up going to eat at restaurants you did not know about and pass on dining at some top restaurants because their Miami Spice menu leaves a lot to be desired.

tizer Combo: Croqueta, papa rellena and masitas de puerco (ham croquettes, stuffed potatoes and pork chunks).
