Unfortunately, there is a tragic ending for one of child. “On the Sidewalk Bleeding" by Evan Hunter....................................................................Page 15 The story focuses on 16-year-old Andy and his last moments after being stabbed by a rival gang member. The details come sharp and fast in third person omniscient (where the narrator is God-like and can go in and out of the character's thoughts and describe everything in a scene). Though he's bleeding in a rain-filled alley, Andy does not yet know he is going to die tonight . but he will. “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut ............................................................................Page 23 The year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal. Sounds great, right? However, things are far from perfect for the Bergeron family in this famous dystopian short story. “Raymond’s Run” by Toni Cade Bambara ........................................................................Page 29 The story centers around and is narrated by Squeaky—nicknamed so because of her high-pitched voice—a young girl growing up in Harlem. There are two things that define Squeaky: her ability to run and the way in which she takes care of her handicapped older brother, Raymond. While the connection between Squeaky and Raymond is certainly central to this short story, a major relationship that develops is that between running rivals Squeaky and Gretchen. “Shame” by Dick Gregory....................................................................................................Page 34 A man recalls his experiences with external and internal shame, growing up poor and Black in the late 1940s-50s. Young Richard is motivated to overcome his shameful circumstances by his affection for a well-to-do classmate, Helene. He ultimately succeeds in overcoming his feelings of shame when he develops the desire to help others. “Thank You Ma’am” by Langston Hughes ........................................................................Page 38 What happens when a teenage boy tries to rob a woman’s purse? They steal all the money that his mom had been saving for their family in the Dominican Republic, but he isn't going to let them get away with it! “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin.............................................................................Page 44 The title of the short story refers to the time that passes between the moment the protagonist, Louise Mallard, hears that her husband is dead . and when she discovers that he is alive after all. This was controversial story by the American standards of the 1890s because it features a female protagonist who feels liberated by the news of her husband's death. Page 3 During Reading: Annotating The purpose of annotation is to notice interesting and/or important information. You should start by underlining things that stand out to you. Then, you should write a brief phrase or sentence about what you are noticing in the margins. A well-annotated story will have 5+ annotations per page. Many of us already annotate for main idea. Based on the bestselling novel by Evan Hunter, the 1955 film shocked and thrilled audiences with its story of a novice teacher and his class of juvenile delinquents in an urban vocational school. UCCELLI TRA UN GRANDE REGISTA E UN GRANDE SCRITTORE di Valerio Calzolaio Alfred Hitchcock ed Evan Hunter (alias Ed McBain) sul set del film "Gli Uccelli" Sessant’anni fa il sommo maestro del cinema Alfred Hitchcock (1899 - 1980) decise di fare un film con protagonisti migliaia di uccelli ostili ai sapiens, una sfida complicata senza tutte le tecnologie evolutesi nei decenni successivi, sfida per sceneggiatori e produttori, attori e attrici, per i tecnici e per se stesso. Il 18 agosto 1961 vi era stata un’invasione di uccelli marini “impazziti” sopra molte residenze della costa californiana, a Capitola e Santa Cruz; era successo in minor misura anche l’anno precedente; continuava a venir fuori che lì vicino corvi attaccavano agnelli e il regista si era tenuto costantemente informato sulle varie vicende. Anni prima era uscito il bel testo di Daphne du Maurier (1907 - 1989), The Birds (1953); dalla grande scrittrice inglese Hitchcock aveva già tratto ispirazione per un film del 1940 premiato con due Oscar, tra cui quello per miglior film; l’omonimo amatissimo capolavoro Rebecca, la prima moglie era stato pubblicato nel 1938. Il regista era già un personaggio mitico non solo in patria (con permanenti frequentazioni italiane, specie sul lago di Como), Psycho era stato il grande successo più recente. Dichiarò di aver letto il racconto sugli uccelli in una di quelle raccolte seriali a lui intitolate, appunto “Alfred Hitchcock racconta” e di aver saputo che tanti volevano adattarlo per la radio o la televisione, senza riuscirci. Visto che non si faceva riferimento ad avvoltoi o uccelli da preda, bensì ai tranquilli comuni uccelli di tutti i giorni, decise di provarci, cominciando a pensare ai trucchi o fotomontaggi necessari e concentrandosi sui gabbiani.

National Press Club Archives Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980) drew the largest National Press Club audience in three years—since French President Charles de Gaulle had spoken there in 1960—when he lectured at a luncheon two weeks prior to the premiere of his 48th feature film, The Birds. Renowned worldwide as cinema’s supreme “master of suspense,” Hitchcock clearly was enjoying the spotlight of fame as he arrived in Washington on a publicity tour for the new film. The British-born director had come to Hollywood in the late 1930s already acknowledged as the world’s “master of melodrama and specialist in the shriek,” in the words of an admiring critic. By the time of his Press Club appearance, Hitchcock had achieved top celebrity status due in large part to his droll appearances on his popular television series and the enormous worldwide success of his most recent thriller, Psycho. By simply placing the words “Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds” next to an image of a woman screaming in terror as a flock of birds attacked, advertisers conveyed to the public all they needed to know to evoke interest in the upcoming film. Hitchcock understood the motion picture as an art form distinguished, as he remarked, for “its ability to communicate with the mass audiences of the world.” Psycho, a low-budget excursion into the horror genre, had broken attendance records in many countries.

Among the contemporary poets there are files for W. H. Auden; Allen Ginsberg; Robinson Jeffers; Robert Lowell; and Stephen Spender. In the area of theater there are files for Maxwell Anderson; Moss Hart; Lillian Hellrnan; Eugene O'Neill; and Tennessee Williams. Random House transacted business with many fine presses and noted typographers and the archives contain files for Nonesuch Press, Grabhorn Press and Golden Cockerel Press, as well as for Bruce Rogers, Valenti Angelo, and Edwin, Jane, and Robert Grabhorn. The most important book published by Random House was James Joyce's Ulysses. Because of its alleged obscenity, it was only legally admitted into the United States after a long battle by Random House in the courts ending in 1934. The Random House Archives contain letters and documents relating to this famous case.   • No Classes with the Girls: Writer Evan Hunter
    An eager ex-Seaman First Class, ambitious to be a writer, enrolled at Hunter College after World War I1 and deter- mined ta learn as much as he could about writing. Evan Hunter, class of '50, is now the established author of nine novels, 25 mysteries in The 87th Precinct series under < the pen name Ed McBain, eight plays and two screenplays, Strangers When We Meet and The Birds. As a Hunter undergraduate, he took most of the writing courses avail- No Classes able and recalls that several teachers nurtured his writing hopes and helped him a great deal. Hunter recounted his college days in a direct, rich voice. "Clinton Mindil, who taught English, was a good man. With the Girls: Mindil would invite several of us from the drama group to lunch and to the Saturday matinee of a Broadway play, at Writer Evan Hunter, 'SO, his expense. Then he'd hold a round table session after- wards. He was operating like an instructor at an Ivy League Reminisces About Hunter's Past campus, and it was really nice." "I was very poor when 1 was a kid and rarely went to the theatre. Mindil cultivated a taste for the theatre in me." Clinton Mindil also spoke to Francis T. Kolars. a writing instructor in the evening school, about the enthusiastic young writer. Mr. Kolars also helped him. "I'd meet Kolars before his evening class, which 1 wasn't in, and give him my stories.
