  • Tales Behind the Tunes Played by Brampton Community Band Martin
Tales Behind the Tunes played by Brampton Community Band Martin Coslett Introduction Towards the end of 2018, my first session with Brampton Community Band was nerve wracking. I had printed out the music for the list they had sent but was not expecting the onslaught of tunes and at such fast tempos! Of course, they were designed for people to dance to so had to be at specific speeds. As eventually an accepted member of the band I was fortunate to play at quite a few church halls and birthday ceilidh’s before the pandemic came to haunt us and stopped the dancing. Half an Hour with the Brampton Community Band Brampton Community Band - ‘the brainchild of Peter Gray’ - recorded a CD at Donut Studios Chesterfield in 2012 of the following tunes: 1. Morgan Rattler/Banish Misfortune 2. Napoleon Crossing the Rhine/Jimmy Garson’s March 3. Woodland Revels 4. The Swallow’s Nest/Calliope House 5. The Greenwood Tree/Northern Light 6. The Tenpenny Bit/The Blackthorn stick 7. John Ryan’s Polka/Dennis Murphy’s Polka 8. The Bishop/Jack Maggot 9. The Gentle Maiden/Road to Lisdoonvarna/O’Keefe’s Slide British music and English folk music includes a variety of important musical styles including dance music like that used in Morris dancing (see types below) as well as sea shanties and other sung genres. From early medieval days tunes were carried from place to place by minstrels who passed on the news of the day in story form (true and ‘fake’) At least one of the tunes included here can be dated back as far as 1046 - Morgan Rattler.

  • English Folk Traditions and Changing Perceptions About Black People in England
Trish Bater 080207052 ‘Blacking Up’: English Folk Traditions and Changing Perceptions about Black People in England Submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy by Patricia Bater National Centre for English Cultural Tradition March 2013 This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution- NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License. Trish Bater 080207052 2 Abstract This thesis investigates the custom of white people blacking their faces and its continuation at a time when society is increasingly aware of accusations of racism. To provide a context, an overview of the long history of black people in England is offered, and issues about black stereotypes, including how ‘blackness’ has been perceived and represented, are considered. The historical use of blackface in England in various situations, including entertainment, social disorder, and tradition, is described in some detail. It is found that nowadays the practice has largely been rejected, but continues in folk activities, notably in some dance styles and in the performance of traditional (folk) drama. Research conducted through participant observation, interview, case study, and examination of web-based resources, drawing on my long familiarity with the folk world, found that participants overwhelmingly believe that blackface is a part of the tradition they are following and is connected to its past use as a disguise. However, although all are aware of the sensitivity of the subject, some performers are fiercely defensive of blackface, while others now question its application and amend their ‘disguise’ in different ways.

  • Ghosts Under the Marquee Lights: Mummers in Alberta, England, And
Ghosts Under the Marquee Lights: Mummers in Alberta, England, and Newfoundland by Mathew James Levitt A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Alberta ©Mathew James Levitt, 2016 ii Abstract The word “mummer” has been used to describe many different people doing many kinds of things, ranging through both space and time, from at least the 18th century to modern days, from the Old World to the New World. In the past these have conventionally been treated as discrete practices or traditions, too varied to warrant comparison. Intertextual theory, however, suggests that these various instances, or texts, are related. The word “mummer” becomes an activating term, bringing all these texts into a forever occurring discourse. This discourse takes place in a world of made of multiple genres and multimedia; including performances both recorded and remembered, words both written and spoken, fiction, non-fiction, film, internet websites and videos, art and visual imagery. Across all of these, contestations and negotiations take place as ideas about tradition, innovation, identity, authority, and authenticity come into play. This study has focused on three groups of mummers from three different places: The Alberta Avenue Mummers Collective who perform in the Alberta Avenue neighbourhood in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; The Coventry Mummers from Coventry, West Midlands, England, who also perform in neighbouring villages such as Stoneleigh and Newbold; and Gerald Matthews, a mummer from Baie Verte, Newfoundland. The relationship of these mummers with the places they appear is integral to an understanding of the phenomenon as a whole, often displaying a substantiating affect where practice helps to make place and vice versa.
