Schomburg reproduced by permission of the New York Public Library CONTENTS Introduction v How to Use This Index vi Main Index 1 Africa Section 157 INTRODUCTION The Clipping File at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of The New York Public Library is composed essentially of periodical and newspaper clippings, although it also includes typescripts, broadsides, pamphlets, programs, book reviews, menus and ephemera of all kinds. This enormous body of information was originally transferred to microfiche through grants by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and could be used only at the Center. Now Chadwyck-Healey Inc. has made this Clipping File available to all the scholarly community interested in the black experience, primarily in the United States, but also in every part of the world. There are two indexes: One to the general file, and the other to the subjects relating to Africa. Both indexes list, in alphabetical order, all the names of individuals or organizations and general topics tht make up this collection of nearly 7,000 subject headings. Browsing through the indexing will provide the user with an overview of the collection, and will lead her or him to related subjects, as Chadwyck-Healey has added many cross-references to the original work. All personal names have been identified by one or more descriptive nouns. This, like the cross references, increases the value of the index itself as a research tool. For those users who have purchased the Africa section of the Schomburg Clipping File, a separate index follows the main one. This part, it should be stressed, is not an addition to the main index, but has been drawn directly from it. Betty Gubert, Head General Research & Reference Collections Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture The New York Public Library Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations v HOW TO USE THE INDEX The index is arranged alphabetically by name and subject. References are to the microfiche serial number which appears on the right-hand side of the microfiche heading. Microfiche should therefore be stored numerically for easy access. Those name and subject headings which appear in the index in upper case correspond exactly to the headings under which the clippings have been arranged on the microfiche. Supplementary headings which have been added to cross-refer the user to main headings appear in lower case. List of Acronyms Used A.C.T. Associated Community Teams A.M.E.
