A Novel Idea: a Narrative Inquiry Into Queer Engagements with Fiction
A Novel Idea: A Narrative Inquiry into Queer Engagements with Fiction By Jeffrey Daniel Lloyd A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Curriculum, Teaching, & Learning Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Jeffrey Daniel Lloyd 2015 A Novel Idea: A Narrative Inquiry into Queer Engagements with Fiction Jeffrey Daniel Lloyd Doctor of Philosophy Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This thesis explores the role reading novels (textual or graphic) played in the survival and desires of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer) students. At the time this research project was conceived, there were not many psychoanalytic and queer feminist critical literacy research studies concerned with how LGBTQ students were using literacy in relation to self-care and trauma caused by anti-LGBTQ oppression. Also LGBTQ students were frequently being characterized in positivist anti-oppression research as one-dimensional victims who were not exercising any agency, while being told by lesbian and gay celebrities to tolerate unlivable conditions at their schools because a better life in a LGBTQ enclave awaits them. Disempowering research, the unlivable lives LGBTQ students are expected to endure in schools and the need for further queer feminist research into specifically queer and trans critical literacies served as the central motivations for the undertaking of this project. This research study focuses on the ways in which LGBTQ students have come to understand the relationships between reading novels, self-care, trauma, and the development of a queer critical literacy. Narrative inquiry, autoethnography, and creative analytic practices were the methodologies used in this project. -

Radiant Beings: Narratives of Contamination and Mutation in Literatures of the Anthropocene Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Kristin Michelle Ferebee Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2019 Dissertation Committee Dr. Thomas S. Davis, Advisor Dr. Jared Gardner Dr. Brian McHale Dr. Rebekah Sheldon 1 Copyrighted by Kristin Michelle Ferebee 2019 2 Abstract The Anthropocene era— a term put forward to differentiate the timespan in which human activity has left a geological mark on the Earth, and which is most often now applied to what J.R. McNeill labels the post-1945 “Great Acceleration”— has seen a proliferation of narratives that center around questions of radioactive, toxic, and other bodily contamination and this contamination’s potential effects. Across literature, memoir, comics, television, and film, these narratives play out the cultural anxieties of a world that is itself increasingly figured as contaminated. In this dissertation, I read examples of these narratives as suggesting that behind these anxieties lies a more central anxiety concerning the sustainability of Western liberal humanism and its foundational human figure. Without celebrating contamination, I argue that the very concept of what it means to be “contaminated” must be rethought, as representations of the contaminated body shape and shaped by a nervous policing of what counts as “human.” To this end, I offer a strategy of posthuman/ist reading that draws on new materialist approaches from the Environmental Humanities, and mobilize this strategy to highlight the ways in which narratives of contamination from Marvel Comics to memoir are already rejecting the problematic ideology of the human and envisioning what might come next. -

Freemen, Slaves?
No. 51. FREEMEN, SLAVES? BY GEORGE W. BUNGAY. 'OU say that you are fl'ee——a free man :—-that you work with free hands and walk with ii-ee feet; that you are the master of your own bones and brains; that you can think your own thoughts and put your thoughts into words and deeds; that you can go from place to place without a pass. You can work or play. You can earn money and spend it or save it. You can learn how to read and write, or you can remain ignorant of the use of letters. You can be a good sober man, or you can become a poor, miserable drunkard. Now there is more than one kind of slavery, and the man who is a drunkard, whether he be black or white, is a slave, and habit-the habit of drinkin.g—,is his master. It is a cruel master, for it takes his wages from him, and does not give him bread to eat nor clothes I0 wear in re turn for the monpy. He spends his money for rum, or gin, or brandy, or wine, or beer. and gets a. pain in the head or a bad feeling in the stomach for it. The drink does not make him smarter ncr stronger than he was before he drank it. I-Ie may feel wise and strong for a short time after drivking,_ but it merely excites him as the whip and the spur excite the horse. A horse will go fast when you whip him and spur him, but whips and spurs will not make him fat and strong.
