Why is it important to know about and have a relationship with these beings we can’t see?” One answer is – we don’t have a choice! Whether we care about the spiritual realm of angels or not, they care about us, for good and for ill. As St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Ephesians, “Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand frm against the tactics of the devil. For our strug- gle is not with fesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens (Ephesians 6:11-12).”

If that is true, and it is, then our choice is not whether to engage with “principalities”, “powers”, and “spir- its” but whether to invoke the full help of the good angels in a struggle that afects us whether we choose it or not. When we pray to our Guardian Angel, to St. Michael, or to any of the other angels, we are asking them and giving them permission to engage in this spiritual struggle on our behalf. This is what we pray after every Mass at St. Michael’s when we invoke our patron and ask him to “defend us in battle”. We may not see clearly how these “evil spirits in the heavens” work to tempt us, challenge us, or steal our peace, but the angels do. And, by God’s grace, we can ask them to weigh in on our side.

Angels are sent to help us, to protect us, and to guide us in the spiritual realm that we struggle to engage with and to see. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, quoting St. , “The an- gels work together for the beneft of us all”. By honoring them together as a parish, we are invoking their help so that, as St. Paul says, we can stand frm.

Have a blessed week, Fr. Michael

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me.” - Isaiah 49:16

These two Bible verses are how life-long Audrey and Allen Lorie Catholics Al and Audrey Lorie characterize their Catholic faith lives. Al identifes with Corinthians, Audrey with Isaiah. “God loves us and we love others,” is how they explain it.

They also identify with St. Michael The Archangel and Mother Teresa Parishes. “We joined St. Michael's 11 years ago, “ Al says. “And," Audrey adds, “I felt the call to move in the direction of helping build a new church and parish when Mother Teresa began celebrating Mass at Green Hope High School six years ago.”

Al loves the “in-church experience” and dynamics that St. Michael's ofers. Audrey is excited about helping Mother Teresa grow into a parish with its own church building. Construction plans are now underway.

THE CATHOLIC FAITH TAKES AWAY FEAR AND GIVES US A

“ CONSISTENT SET OF VALUES TO LIVE BY. WE KNOW JESUS, WE PRAY TO HIM AND WE FEEL BLESSED TO SHARE “ HIS LOVE WITH OTHERS.

- Allen and Audrey Lorie

The Lories brought their active parish lives to Cary from New York. Audrey grew up in a Polish parish where she was a cantor and an Extraordinary Minister. Al has long served in parish life as a Knight (of Columbus), as a lector, and as an Extraordinary Minister. Al says, “The Catholic Faith

8 Meet the Lorie Family

takes away fear and gives us a consistent set of values to live by." Audrey adds, “we know Jesus, we pray to Him and we feel blessed to share His love with others."

Additionally, as members of the Cardinal Newman Society, the Lories have long served the goal of “advocating and supporting fdelity to the teaching of the Catholic Church across all levels and methods of Catholic education” – the global mission of the Society. Parish life for Al and Audrey also means life-long friendships among parishioners and clergy as well as a very active social life.

Audrey’s passion for gardening and fowers is beautifully on display as soon as you get to their front door. Along with everything else, Audrey’s creative drive helps her carve out time for macramé and crocheting. Al’s Italian heritage and love of Bocce (bocci) has made him the local retirement communities’ “Bocce Ambassador” for promoting and hosting tournaments.

They both have dream goals – if they were ever canonized Audrey would want to be the patron saint of new mothers. Her calling and The Lories engage in daily spiritual practice is to help young mothers learn how reading and discussion together. to love their way through the challenges and confusion of nurturing young lives for the frst time. Al’s dream is to be the patron saint of helping those in dire need - the hungry and those who need life counseling for the painful burdens they may carry.

There are lots of parishioners, like Al and Audrey, who make parish life richer and deeply satisfying. All you have to do is look around - they're everywhere. Maybe take this

opportunity to say hello to your neighbor in the pew;

you never know who you might meet! “ In the meantime, we hope to introduce more of your fellow parishioners to you here in the bulletin with similar profles every few weeks. Want to share your story or know someone we should interview? Let us know at [email protected]

Steven concelebrated the frst school Mass of the year in the Parish Center with Grades 7 -8 students attending in-person.

P. Miguel
