An Appalachian Trail Symphony: New England (Symphony No. 1) by Keane Southard Program notes: An Appalachian Trail Symphony: New England (Symphony No. 1) for Orchestra was begun during my hike of the 734-mile New England portion of the Appalachian Trail (June 11, 2016-August 26, 2016) and completed in late March 2017. The symphony was commissioned by a consortium of orchestras throughout New England in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the completion of the trail, which stretches over approximately 2,200 miles from Springer Mountain in Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Maine. I grew up in central Massachusetts, but a few years before I was born my father was a graduate student at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, through which the Appalachian Trail runs after it crosses the Connecticut River from Vermont into New Hampshire. (I actually composed the majority of the symphony in Hanover, with the AT lying only a few hundred feet away in the woods.) They loved living in New Hampshire, and when my siblings and I were young they took us on so many camping and weekend trips around New Hampshire and Vermont. These trips instilled in me a love of the outdoors and this region as well as made me aware of the AT itself. While we didn't do much hiking on those trips, I was captivated by the idea of one day hiking this legendary trail. When I later started to get serious about composing, I thought it would be wonderful to hike the trail and then write a piece of music about the experience some day. -

Chapter 430 BICYCLES, SKATEBOARDS AND ROLLER SKATES § 430.01. Definitions. [Ord. No. 458, passed 2-25-1991; Ord. No. 535, passed 7-8-1996] The following words, when used in this chapter, shall have the following meanings, unless otherwise clearly apparent from the context: (a) BICYCLE — Shall mean any wheeled vehicle propelled by means of chain driven gears using footpower, electrical power or gasoline motor power, except that vehicles defined as "motorcycles" or "mopeds" under the Motor Vehicle Code for the State of Michigan shall not be considered as bicycles under this chapter. This definition shall include, but not be limited to, single-wheeled vehicles, also known as unicycles; two-wheeled vehicles, also known as bicycles; three-wheeled vehicles, also known as tricycles; and any of the above-listed vehicles which may have training wheels or other wheels to assist in the balancing of the vehicle. (b) SKATEBOARD — Shall include any surfboard-like object with wheels attached. "Skateboard" shall also include, under its definition, vehicles commonly referred to as "scooters," being surfboard-like objects with wheels attached and a handle coming up from the forward end of the surfboard area. (c) ROLLER SKATES — Shall include any shoelike device with wheels attached, including, but not limited to, roller skates, in-line roller skates and roller blades. § 430.02. Chronology of Selected Ski Lifts Notes for 2001 Exhibit, New England Ski Museum Jeff Leich The following notes on ski lifts are intended to aid in the development of a Ski Museum exhibit. In many cases it is unclear from the sources referenced below exactly when a particular lift was installed or first operated. It is also probable that sources with data on certain early ski lifts was not located. It is therefore not possible to compare opening dates to determine which lift was "the first" of its kind to operate; rather, this chronology is intended to indicate the general sequence of the development of early ski lifts of the stated types. 1870 Eureka Mine ore tramway used to transport miners for skiing (Allen, 109, 203 note 22--Vallejo CA Sunday Times Herald, 12-13-1870). "For example, the ore bucket of the Plumas Eureka Mine at Johnsville (CA) was converted on Sundays into the world's first ski tow. It was operated by steam". (Gould, p 136 (ref to Vallejo CA Sunday Times Herald, 12-13-1870). 1896 Riblet Tramways Company of Spokane, WA begins designing mining tramways (Gilbert, p. 2). 1907 Sightseeing four-passenger gondola built in Silver Plume, CO; torn down for scrap metal about 1914 (Gilbert, p. 2). 1907 "Sled lifts had been employed on the slopes of Bodele in the Voralberg region of Austria as early as 1907" (Gilbert, p. 4). 1908 Haulback tows used in Europe as early as 1908 (Allen, 109, note 20 on pg 203, from patent application, March 16, 1908). 1910 "A tow to haul toboggans was ready for the Truckee CA carnival in 1910 and then was used later by skiers following the formation of the Truckee Ski Club in 1913". -
