A half-century later, the mother of all music festivals still resonates ifty years after the fact, it still resonates with us. Tucked up in the Catskill Mountains, the Woodstock Music & Art Fair — promoted as “An Aquarian Exposition, Three Days of Peace and Music,” but known to one and all as simply Woodstock — took place in 1969 over three-plus days. From Friday, Aug. 15, through the morning of Monday, Aug. 18, dairy farmer Max Yasgur’s 600- acre parcel of land in Bethel, New York — forever immortalized in Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (ironically, she wasn’t at the event itself) — became the epicenter of the music and cultural universe, a haven for 400,000-plus hippies, bohemians, music lovers and mem- bers of the counterculture. It began when folkie Richie Havens began strumming his gui- tar, kicking off the festival with Paul Gerry/Bethel Woods Collection “From the Prison.” Thirty-two more acts, about 66 hours and several rainstorms later, it ended when guitar god Jimi Hendrix capped off a stellar set with his rendition of “Hey Joe.” Thousands of cars were left stranded for miles and miles en route to the venue as concertgo- ers walked to their destination. Tickets for the festival were $18, but many attendees got in for free when the crowd more than tripled what organizers had anticipated. Dallas Taylor, the drummer for supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (playing just its second-ever show), asked the helicopter pilot James Sarles/Bethel Woods Collection James Sarles/Bethel Woods Collection flying him to the event what body of More than 400,000 people descended on a dairy farm in Bethel, N.Y., for the concert held 50 years ago.

The Activity Calendar has the links for the virtual activities. Hello -- Yesterday the family and friends of our founding CSC Board member Debbie Worthley gathered in Huntington to celebrate her life. Rev. Larry Detweiler underscored some wonderful advice found in her obituary: "In memory of Debbie and to honor her lifelong passions, plant something beautiful, volunteer in your community, visit with an elder neighbor, and go for long walks. We all have more to do now." Yours in staying active, Martha HAPPENING THIS WEEK All Community Senior Center Programs and Activities for the week of 7/26-8/01 All those participating in CSC in-person activities are required to sign a waiver. It is the same waiver as was used pre-COVID-19. If you signed one then, you will not need to sign again. The CDC and the State of Vermont no longer require masks to be worn. While no longer mandatory, Vermont is still encouraging unvaccinated people to follow guidelines like masking indoors and going outside to gather with other households. There may be sites used by the CSC that will require masks. That information will be in the description of the activity. We understand that as things open up, we will all fall somewhere on a continuum of how much risk we’re willing to take. As we venture back into the world, we must all decide for ourselves which steps we’ll take and when we’ll take them.

  • The Last Bedraggled Fan Sloshed out of Max Yasgur's Muddy Pasture More Than 25 Years Ago. That's When the Debate Began About Woodstock's Historical Significance
The last bedraggled fan sloshed out of Max Yasgur's muddy pasture more than 25 years ago. That's when the debate began about Woodstock's historical significance. True believers still call Woodstock the capstone of an era devoted to human advancement. Cynics say it was a fitting, ridiculous end to an era of naivete. Then there are those who say it was just a hell of a party. The Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969 drew more than 450,000 people to a pasture in Sullivan County. For four days, the site became a countercultural mini-nation in which minds were open, drugs were all but legal and love was "free". The music began Friday afternoon at 5:07pm August 15 and continued until mid-morning Monday August 18. The festival closed the New York State Thruway and created one of the nation's worst traffic jams. It also inspired a slew of local and state laws to ensure that nothing like it would ever happen again. Woodstock, like only a handful of historical events, has become part of the cultural lexicon. As Watergate is the codeword for a national crisis of confidence and Waterloo stands for ignominious defeat, Woodstock has become an instant adjective denoting youthful hedonism and 60's excess. "What we had here was a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence," said Bethel town historian Bert Feldman. "Dickens said it first: 'It was the best of times. It was the worst of times'. It's an amalgam that will never be reproduced again." Gathered that weekend in 1969 were liars and lovers, prophets and profiteers.

Woodstock Festival Grounds Historic Site Cultural Landscape Report Prepared by Heritage Landscapes, 2015 Monument Museum Parking Bethel Woods Today This aerial photograph shows Bethel Woods Center for the Arts as it appeared in 2012. The solid orange outline shows the boundaries of the property that Max Yasgur leased to Woodstock Ventures for the festival, while the dashed red, blue, and green outlines represent the significant Landscape Character Areas (LCAs) identified in the Cultural Landscape Report. ethel Woods Center for the Arts is situated on the site of one of the most significant cultural events of the 1960s—the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. BWe take our responsibility as stewards of this historic place very seriously, and in 2014 we commissioned a report to document the site and to recommend steps that we could take to better preserve and interpret the site for our guests. Landscape historians and architects Heritage Landscapes produced an enlightening and detailed Cultural Landscape Report, which was accepted by the Bethel Woods Board of Trustees at their summer 2015 meeting. This CLR describes the natural and human-made features of the landscape in 1969 and the present. The landscape today remains remarkably similar to its historic condition, and the report makes 21 concrete recommendations 1969 Site Plan The historic site can be divided into three distinct for how the site can be better preserved, better “Landscape Character Areas:” LCA 1 Main Field, LCA interpreted, and made more authentic. 2 Bindy Bazaar, and LCA 3 Hog Farm (off this map to the left). None of his 10 songs was included in the official Woodstock albums or in the various versions of Michael Wadleigh’s documentary “Woodstock.” So forgotten was Mr. Sommer’s appearance that his name was omitted from the original plaque placed on the festival site in Bethel, N.Y., to commemorate the event of Aug. 15-17, 1969. Mr. Sommer is the lost bard of Woodstock. There’s bitter irony in that: With his frizzy shock of dark hair, blue eyes, wide smile and dimpled chin, he seemed an embodiment of the ideal hippie youth. The producers of “Hair” thought so. When he joined the cast, they featured his image on the program.
