73 Gandhi and Mani Bhavan Sandhya Mehta Volume 1 : Issue 07, November 2020 1 : Issue 07, November Volume Independent Researcher, Social Media Coordinator of Mani Bhavan, Mumbai, [email protected] Sambhāṣaṇ 74 Abstract: This narrative attempts to give a brief description of Gandhiji’s association with Mani Bhavan from 1917 to 1934. Mani Bhavan was the nerve centre in the city of Bombay (now Mumbai) for Gandhiji’s activities and movements. It was from here that Gandhiji launched the first nationwide satyagraha of Rowlett Act, started Khilafat and Non-operation movements. Today it stands as a memorial to Gandhiji’s life and teachings. _______ The most distinguished address in a quiet locality of Gamdevi in Mumbai is the historic building, Mani Bhavan - the house where Gandhiji stayed whenever he was in Mumbai from 1917 to 1934. Mani Bhavan belonged to Gandhiji’s friend Revashankar Jhaveri who was a jeweller by profession and elder brother of Dr Pranjivandas Mehta - Gandhiji’s friend from his student days in England. Gandhiji and Revashankarbhai shared the ideology of non-violence, truth and satyagraha and this was the bond of their empathetic friendship. Gandhiji respected Revashankarbhai as his elder brother as a result the latter was ever too happy to Volume 1 : Issue 07, November 2020 1 : Issue 07, November Volume host him at his house. And yet it is a truly- important work destined to have a great educational effect. It is a history of India's peaceful- struggle for liberation under Gandhi's guidance. All that happened there came about in our time — under our very eyes. What makes the book into a most effective work of art is simply the choice and arrangement of the facts reported. It is the skill pf the born historian, in whose hands the various threads are held together and woven into a pattern from which a complete picture emerges. How is it that a young man is able to create such a mature work? The author gives us the explanation in an introduction: He considers it his bounden duty to serve a cause with all his ower and without flinching from any sacrifice, a cause v aich was clearly embodied in Gandhi's unique personality: to overcome, by means of the awakening of moral forces, the danger of self-destruction by which humanity is threatened through breath-taking technical developments. The threatening downfall is characterized by such terms as "depersonalization" regimentation “total war"; salvation by the words “personal responsibility together with non-violence and service to mankind in the spirit of Gandhi I believe the author to be perfectly right in his claim that each individual must come to a clear decision for himself in this important matter: There is no “middle ground ". -

Abstract The present paper takes broad overview of trial of Indian National army as the World war II construction and presided over by lord Wavell. The Indian National Army trials (of captured members) began on November 5, 1945 at the Red Fort in Delhi, as three stalwarts of the Azad Hind Fauj — one a Muslim (Shahnawaz Khan), one a Hindu (Prem Sahgal) and one a Sikh (Gurbaksh Dhillon) — arrived at Subhas Bose’s "Chalo Delhi" destination in ironic ironclad circumstances. The commander-in-chief of the British Indian Army, Claude Auchinleck, had reported to his bosses on October 31 that the Indian Army would accept the INA trials as "the majority view is that they are all traitors". And he believed that stories about the INA’s returnee troops (who numbered no more than 23,000 survivors) would be overwhelmed by those of loyalist British Indian Army troops (numbering nearly a million) who would be returning to those same villages and towns. Hugh Toye, the British spy who delved into Subhas Bose’s life and became a grudging admirer, knew that there already were underlying problems with this view because the nature of demobilisation in Malaya had allowed the intermingling of INA prisoners and British Indian Army loyalists for too long. It had taken several months to evacuate the Indian troops, who were still the last ones to be repatriated after the British and Australian ones, so even the loyalist troops’ views and opinions about the war and nationalism were coloured. -

History of the Court in Avadh from 1856 A. D. up to Present Time Compiled by SRI H. K. GHOSE, Bar-at-Law President, Avadh Bar Association, Lucknow BRIEF HISTORY OF OUDH Oudh was annexed to the territories of the British East India Company by Lord Dalhousie, Governor General in 1856; and twelve districts: Lucknow, Bara Banki, Faizabad, Sultanpur, Hardoi, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh, Unnao, Gonda, Bahraich, Sitapur and Kheri were constituted into a separate Province of Oudh, under a Chief Commissioner. After some time the Civil Administration of Avadh was united under one Local Government with the districts administered by the Lt. -Governor of the NorthWestern Provinces; and the territories thus united became known as the North-Western Provinces and Oudh. Subsequently, by Act VII of 1902 passed by the Governor-General-in-Council [United Provinces (Designation) Act], the designation was changed into the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh. COURTS Ever since the said Annexation, there were separate courts to administer the laws in Oudh (Avadh) and the laws were codified by Act XVIII of 1876 (The Oudh Laws Act) passed by the Governor-General-in- Council. The Judiciary, including the highest court of appeal, was distinct from courts of the sister province of the North-Western Provinces and there were separate cadres of subordinate courts until the year 1948. JUDICIAL COMMISSIONER'S COURT After the Annexation, the highest court of appeal was established in Lucknow in 1856 with a Judicial Commissioner for the disposal of Civil and Criminal Cases. It continued to function for nearly 7 decades except for a short interregnum during the Mutiny of 1857-58. -

Commonly known as Babarao Savarkar, he is the epitome of heroism that is unknown and unsung! He was the eldest of the four Savarkar siblings - Ganesh or Babarao; Vinayak or Tatyarao, Narayan or Balarao were the three Savarkar brothers; they had a sister named Maina or Mai who was married into the Kale family. Babarao was a great revolutionary, philosopher, writer and organizer of Hindus. The following account is largely an abridged English version of Krantiveer Babarao Savarkar, a Marathi biography written by DN Gokhale, Shrividya Prakashan, Pune, second edition, pp.343, 1979. PART-III FOREST SATYAGRAHA AT CHIRNER 299 PART-III Forest Satyagraha at Chirner The initial thrust of civil disobedience was on salt satyagraha, but the salt phase of the agitation started petering out when the monsoon arrived. There was indeed no all-India blueprint for civil disobedience and the movement in practice took the form of loosely co-ordinated local conflicts. By 15 May 1930 Congress Working Committee realised that extensive flexibility was necessary to be granted to local satyagraha units, and that a time had come for new forms of civil, disobedience, such as violation of forest laws, non-payment of land revenue, disobedience to the Ordinances, withdrawal of post office savings, etc. As Jairamdas Daulatram wrote in the Young India : " Each town, each village may have…………..to become its own battlefield. The strategy of the battle must then come to be determined by local circumstances and change with them from day to day " (Young India, 17 July I930). Accordingly the Maharashtra Civil Disobedience Committee opted for a series of satyagrahas against the oppressive forest laws. Forest satyagraha became a great rallying point and its strategy for Western Maharashtra was prepared by Shankarrao Deo. After the Shiroda Salt satyagraha, the next target was the forest satyagraha in Sangamner and Akola talukas of Ahmednagar district. A series of forest satyagrahas was enacted in almost all districts. However, the satyagraha at Chirner in Panvel taluka attracted great attention not merely in Maharashtra, but also in India. A huge mass of people violated the forest laws simultaneously at Chirner, Kalhe and Chawane on 8 September 1930. -

1. LETTER TO C. F. ANDREWS ALIGARH, November 23 [1920]1 MY DEAREST CHARLIE2, I have your letters and your wire. Have I done you an injustice? I simply wired saying I was trying to send you—I did not say you had accepted the post. And I said what I did on the strength of our conversation.3 In any case there will be no pressure whatsoever brought to bear on you. You wills simply do what you can for the Muslim University. Yes I realize the necessity of putting the English connection on a pure basis. In its present condition it is hateful. But I am not as yet sure that it must be ended at any cost. It may be that the English temperament is not responsive to a status of perfect equality with the black and the brown races. Then the English must be made to retire from India. But I am not prepared to reject the possibility of an honourable equality. The connection must end on the clearest possible proof that the English have hopelessly failed to realize the first principle of religion, namely, brotherhood of man. Baro Dada’s4 letter has not been received by me. It may be in the Ashram or it may be received by me tomorrow on reaching Delhi. I have duly telegraphed to you. I cannot wire any message to Dr. Dutta but if there is yet time I shall endeavour to write out something for him. I do hope you are keeping well. I do not wonder at the Gujarati children having been withdrawn.5 I do not think you have lost anything.
