MYTHOLOGIZATION OF AN OTTOMAN INTELLECTUAL IN THE MODERN TURKISH AND SOCIALIST ALBANIAN HISTORIOGRAPHIES BASED ON « SELECTIVE PERCEPTION » Bülent Bilmez* It may be best to start by clarifying the limits of the subject of this paper, which is an early outcome of a long-term research project. It is not the purpose of this paper to write a biography of Shemseddin Sami Frashëri (1850-1904) or to present a thorough study of his works1. It is very well known that, as a no velist, journalist, lexicographer and self-taught linguist Sami was one of the most productive intellectuals of the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the nineteenth century and has been praised both in the Turkish and Albanian historiographies in the twentieth century for his contributions to Turkish or Albanian nation-building respectively.

  • Kuvendi I Studimeve Albanologjike (2021)

  • Albanian Language Management and the Generation of Kosovo Albanian National Identity Since 1945
ALBANIAN LANGUAGE MANAGEMENT AND THE GENERATION OF KOSOVO ALBANIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY SINCE 1945 JUSTIN GREGORY HAMILTON ELLIOTT University College London Doctor of Philosophy 2017 I, Justin Gregory Hamilton Elliott, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis is about the development of a national identity through the means of language, both as a terrain and a vehicle. This thesis argues the modern intellectuals’ sense of moral mission in colonial nation-building was a response to exogenous modernization, and involved imagining the people as Albanians separated from Albania. This was most clearly encapsulated in the adoption of the same standard language as Albania in 1968 and the intellectuals’ subsequent management and reaction to external constraint, which was imposed in such a way as to prove counterproductive and enhance the intellectuals’ status still further. Yet, because there are limits to the way in which imagination of a society can conflict with reality, the standard language has failed to bring political or linguistic unity. In arguing this, the thesis provides a new interpretation of the development of Kosovo Albanian national identity. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction 4 Chapter One How the Modern Kosovo Albanian intellectual 57 became possible Chapter Two Writing as they hear: the Standardization of 95 Albanian in the People’s Republic of Albania Chapter Three Standard Albanian

ISSN 2411-958X (Print) European Journal of September-December 2017 ISSN 2411-4138 (Online) Interdisciplinary Studies Volume 3, Issue 4 Political Circumstances in Albania from 1920 to 1924 Skender Lutfiu, PhD Cand Institute of History, Prishtinë Abstract The events that marked the period 1920-1924 are undoubtedly those of an interior character such as the Congress of Lushnja and the Vlora War (1920), the parliamentary elections (1921 and 1923), the June uprising (1924), etc. while the external ones are undisputed the recognition of Albania and its borders at the London Conference (9 December 1921) and its admission to the League of Nations (1921). The democratic system imposed by the Congress of Lushnja, proved to be ineffective. That is, because it didn’t bring political and economic stability in the country, but on the contrary caused instability in large proportions, all because of the coup d’etat and the numerous uprisings that characterized the period 1920-1922. When the armed political struggle in Albania intensified, nationalist and moderate concepts were created in the Albanian politics. During this period, the Albanian political scene was divided into several political views through North-South contradictions, Muslim-Christian, Zogu-Noli, Conservative-Liberal, and so on. This diversity of religious, regional, political and conceptual character led to political rivalry within the Albanian leadership in Albania over the 1920- 1924 period, in the name of democratic principles, even with non-democratic means. By thus creating not only a serious political climate, but also an attempt for radical changes in the country's government, such as the June Uprising of 1924.

THE MEMORY OF GEORGE CASTRIOTA SCANDERBEG AMONG THE ARBERESH OF ITALY: A STUDY ON THE ROLE OF DIASPORA IN THE CREATION OF ALBANIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY by ARTEMIDA KABASHI, B.A. A THESIS IN HISTORY Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Texas Tech University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS Approved Stefano D’Amico Chairperson of the Committee Aliza Siu Wong Accepted John Borrelli Dean of the Graduate School August, 2005 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to first thank my advisor and chair of my committee, Dr. Stefano D’Amico. I first discovered my passion for Arberesh history in his class. His enthusiasm and both broad and deep knowledge of Italian history, sparked my imagination, held my interest, and inspired me to pursue my own research on Scanderbeg and the Albanian community of Southern Italy. I would also like to thank Dr. Aliza Wong, who enriched my thesis with her comments and help. She patiently guided me these past two years through many papers and a thesis. Her kindness and understanding enabled me to start and (remain) on the path of the researcher. I am grateful to both committee members for expanding my historical knowledge, and allowing me to proceed in new directions with my research. I also thank Texas Tech University’s History department for giving me the opportunity to come to Lubbock, Texas and pursue this degree. The department’s knowledgeable, helpful and friendly history faculty generated a wonderful learning environment. Finally, I dedicate this work to my parents overseas, and Darrell and Ruth in Vale.
