(FAMSI) provided generous support to this investigator to conduct a regional survey in the area surrounding the Guirún site in Oaxaca, México ( Figure 1 ). The survey of 110 km 2 was completed in summer 1995, and a preliminary report was filed with FAMSI in September of that year. Shortly thereafter, an extension was granted so that the remaining project funds could be used for additional fieldwork at the Guirún site itself. In June and July 1996, the project prepared a detailed terrace-by-terrace map of the Guirún archaeological site. The site is situated in the terrain of San Lorenzo Albarradas and San Pablo Mitla (Tlacolula district) at the eastern edge of the Valley of Oaxaca (Figure 2 ). The project personnel included the Director Dr. Gary M. Feinman (University of Wisconsin-Madison) as well as Linda M. Nicholas (University of Wisconsin), Fausto Olivera Mendoza (Xaagá, Mitla), Everardo Olivera Díaz (Xaagá, Mitla), and Laura Waterbury (student volunteer, McGill University, Canada). The 1996 project represented the second year of a planned long-term effort to study the Classic-Postclassic period transition and specialized household production at the eastern edge of the Tlacolula arm of the Valley of Oaxaca. The summer 1996 field research was designed to produce a more accurate and detailed map of Guirún than is possible during regional survey, and to define the extent of the site during each phase of occupation. -

ENDANGERMENT OF A TRANSNATIONAL LANGUAGE: THE CASE OF SAN LUCAS QUIAVINI ZAPOTEC by Gabriela Pérez Báez April 24, 2009 A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the State University of New York at Buffalo in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Linguistics Copyright by Gabriela Pérez Báez 2009 ii Acknowledgments It is unlikely that I would have come to know about San Lucas Quiaviní, and certainly thought of devoting the last eight years of my life to studying language use in San Lucas had it not been for two people: my mom and Dr. Felipe Lopez. One day, my mom gave me a clipping from a magazine telling the story of a young man from San Lucas who had immigrated to Los Angeles in his mid-teens. The article put a great deal of emphasis on the fact that when this young man emigrated to Los Angeles, he had little Spanish skills, and told the story of someone who was determined to do whatever it took to get an education. That involved learning Spanish and English and getting a GED. He did. Then he went to college. Then he went to graduate school. Along the way, he became an advocate of indigenous rights and focused on the preservation of his native language: San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec. He teamed up with Dr. Pamela Munro of the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles and together they co-authored the Di’csyonaary X:tèe’n Dìi’zh Sah Sann Lu’uc (San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec Dictionary) in 1999. -

Chapter 2 Definiteness in Cuevas Mixtec Carlos Cisneros University of Chicago Languages vary widely in in their morpho-syntactic strategies for marking definite- ness within the noun phrase. Schwarz (2009; 2013) and Jenks (2015) find that these strategies often correspond to distinct characterizations of the semantics of definite descriptions. Many languages feature distinct mechanisms for expressing definite descriptions as either unique or familiar, such as by having two distinct classes of definite article or by contrasting definite bare nominals with some form ofovert definite marking. Cuevas Mixtec shows that a language can also feature internal variation in the marking of either uniqueness or familiarity. Most nominals of this language are capable of taking on bare forms for the expression of uniqueness, while familiarity is expressed using overt definite articles. There are some nom- inals, however, which never combine with overt definite articles or which must take on definite articles in a larger set of semantic environments. The variation observed here seems to be tied to etymological factors within the nominal and the influence of an animacy hierarchy. 1 Introduction Recent literature on the proper characterization of definiteness shows that lan- guages vary widely in the strategies they utilize for its expression, from bare nominals to the occurrence of definite articles or even demonstratives. Schwarz (2009) and Jenks (2015) show that when languages feature more than one strat- egy for the expression of definiteness, the variation exhibited semantically corre- sponds to distinct notions of definiteness itself. One class of definite expressions will encode uniqueness of an individual, such that the descriptive content con- veyed by the nominal can only be attributed to that individual. -

Conozco mi Municipio y a todas sus agencias, como indígena que soy de este Municipio de Tezoatlán de Segura y Luna, he podido acceder a todas y cada una de las agencias que lo conforman; conozco los problemas que lo aquejan y se de primera mano que la pobreza y la marginación es el principal problema que enfrentamos. La verdad es que para nosotros es indispensable que, cada quien acorde con su capacidad, participe, precisamente, en este reto colosal, y eso es básicamente lo que estamos haciendo. Y nos parece que el camino es, precisamente, actuar al mismo tiempo en los dos frentes: en el frente de combate a la pobreza y en el frente de combate al deterioro del medioambiente. Y con base en ese principio presentamos un PLAN DE DESARROLLO SUSTENTABLE. Cada objetivo propuesto anticipa los problemas a resolver, estamos priorizando soluciones, pero ante todo basándonos en los problemas que presenta nuestro Municipio. El logro de esto, es lento pero con tenacidad trataremos de sacar del rezago en que vivimos, Nuestro misión es promover el desarrollo integral sustentable, la seguridad en nuestro Municipio y el bienestar de los ciudadanos que habitan en el.
