15 FEBRUARY 7.15PM & 17 FEBRUARY 2PM “There’s a real buzz and sense of purpose about what this company is doing” ~ The Guardian www.niopera.com Grand Opera House, Belfast Welcome to The Grand Opera House for this new production of The Flying Dutchman. This is, by some way, NI Opera’s biggest production to date. Our very first opera (Menotti’s The Medium, coincidentally staged two years ago this month) utilised just five singers and a chamber band, and to go from this to a grand opera demanding 50 singers and a full symphony orchestra in such a short space of time indicates impressive progress. Similarly, our performances of Noye’s Fludde at the Beijing Music Festival in October, and our recent Irish Times Theatre Award nominations for The Turn of the Screw, demonstrate that our focus on bringing high quality, innovative opera to the widest possible audience continues to bear fruit. It feels appropriate for us to be staging our first Wagner opera in the bicentenary of the composer’s birth, but this production marks more than just a historical anniversary. Unsurprisingly, given the cost and complexities involved in performing Wagner, this will be the first fully staged Dutchman to be seen in Northern Ireland for generations. More unexpectedly, perhaps, this is the first ever new production of a Wagner opera by a Northern Irish company. Northern Ireland features heavily in this production. The opera begins and ends with ships and the sea, and it does not take too much imagination to link this back to Belfast’s industrial heritage and the recent Titanic commemorations. -

They have access to coaching in languages, stagecraft and vocal techniques, and weekly rehearsals on popular operatic excerpts chosen by the Artistic Committee, and access to master classes by visiting artists. To date, members of the ATP have appeared on the main stage of the Esplanade Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall as well as performing in many educational outreach programmes as soloists and as members of the ensemble, bringing opera excerpts and songs to unconventional places like the National Library, Esplanade Concourse, Our Tampines Hub amongst others. The singers receive regular coachings by Nancy Yuen and Jessica Chen with assistance from répétiteur Aloysius Foong. In 2019, they performed a 90 minutes Abridged Version of Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro at the Victoria Concert Hall to much critical acclaim. Sung in Italian with English and Chinese surtitles An approximately 90 minutes Abridged Version with no intermission. Late-comers will only be admitted at suitable breaks. -

Sharing the Stage – the Central Role of Participatory Opera
London Symphony Orchestra LSO Discovery Sharing the Stage – the central role of participatory opera Sunday 5 July 11am–6pm LSO St Luke’s UBS and LSO Music Education Centre LSO St Luke’s Principal Donors: Welcome from Kathryn McDowell CBE DL We know that music created to mix performers of all abilities – combining the skills, talents and energies of professional players, children and many others – has the power to refresh the repertoire and connect communities. This conference will explore how participatory music can develop music, opera and music theatre, as well as transform our organisations and our musicians, our audiences and our community. This evening at the Barbican, LSO Discovery Choirs, the LSO Community Choir and Guildhall Symphony Orchestra unite with the LSO under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle in the UK premiere of a new children’s opera, The Monster in the Maze by Jonathan Dove, a co-commission from the LSO, Berlin Philharmonic and Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Bringing together colleagues from the classical music sector and beyond, today’s conference will share knowledge, experiences and views of what works or doesn’t work, why and how, and the effect of participatory work across our organisations. The conference aims to address questions such as: • What is the effect on our organisations, our audiences and our community, of placing specially created participatory work at the heart of our artistic programme? • What is the future for new participatory music? • What do we need to do to ensure that new generations of composers, conductors, artists and administrators are equipped to embrace the challenges of participatory performance that is truly at the heart of artistic programming? Today’s conference speakers, contributors and attendees include leaders from these areas, together with an international group of 15 young creative artists brought together to engage with the whole process of the international commissioning consortium.
