St Therese Calendar 2015 Layout 1 St Thérèse Calendar 2015 90th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CANONISATION OF ST THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX t Thérèse of Lisieux departed this life on 30 September 1897. The flurry of events after her death – the publication of Story of a Soul and its impact, the miracles, Sthe influx of correspondence to the Lisieux Carmel and the growing number of pilgrims to the Lisieux Cemetery all contributed to the calls for her beatification and canonisation. Within a short number of years, for the time, she was canonised on 17 May 1925, ninety years ago. The year before her death - in the part of Story of a Soul in which she expounded on her Doctrine of Love - St Thérèse wrote ‘I would want to preach the gospel on all the five continents simultaneously and even to the remotest isles. I would be a missionary not for a few years only but from the beginning of creation until the consummation of the ages’. In June 1897 she wrote ‘I am not dying, I am entering into life’ and when her sister Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart said ‘what sorrow we’ll experience when you leave us’ St Thérèse said ‘Oh no you will see; it will be like a shower of roses’. Later in July that year she said ‘I feel that my mission is about to begin, my mission to make God loved as I love Him, to teach souls my little way – the way of spiritual childhood, the way of trust and absolute surrender’. How her wishes and premonitions have been realised! St Thérèse was declared Joint Patron of all missionaries and of the missions in 1927; Down the years countless numbers of people have continued to come to Lisieux to pray, to seek spiritual renewal and to walk in Thérèse’s footsteps; On the centenary of her death St Thérèse was made a Doctor of the Church in recognition of the wisdom of her doctrine of Love in the Church, her holiness and the worldwide dissemination of her message through her writings; St Thérèse’s Little Way of Trust and Surrender to God’s Merciful Love continues to spread. Story of a Soul is read in numerous languages; her relics travel the world; her message is on the worldwide web. St Thérèse’s name in religion St Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face expresses the heart of her spirituality centred on the contemplation of God’s Love revealed in the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption. (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, General Audience, April 2011) As we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the canonisation of St Thérèse may we strive to love God as she did remembering her words: Perfect love means putting up with other peoples shortcomings Feeling no surprise at their weaknesses Finding encouragement even in the slightest evidence of good qualities in them. St Therese Calendar 2020_Layout 1 01/10/2019 08:18 Page 3 Dear Friend, The Carmelite Family is very blessed to have a Family of Saints associated with us: Saints Louis and Zélie Martin and their daughter, St. Thérèse of Lisieux. We believe that the Martin Family embody what is best in family life and offer a wonderful example of what a family can become. Consequently, in conjunction with its organisers, we arranged that the Relics of these three extraordinary Saints would be in Ireland for the World Meeting of Families. They travelled around the country so that as many people as possible could visit them and, of course, they were present at the Papal Mass in the Phoenix Park. We were delighted with the positive and warm reception that the Relics received over the five weeks they were in Ireland. I take this opportunity to thank again all those who were involved in this great event. Louis and Zélie were canonized by Pope Francis in 2015, the first couple to be canonized. This was a recognition that married life and parenting are a very special and important vocation.

  • Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish July 2014 Newsletter
Lay Carmelite Community #578 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish July 2014 Newsletter I think it was Fr. John Malley, O. Carm., who said July is called the month of Carmel. If so, right he was. When you go into the Carmelite website, www.ocarm.org, you will see all of saints and blessed listed in their July Calendar. You’ll see that every week we have a saint or blessed as example of how to live, to remember, to pray to, read a book or even go on line to research their saintly lives. But first and foremost is the Carmelite’s principal feast day on July 16 in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. From the time the first hermits inhabited the holy mountain, we know that a chapel was built in the midst of their cells on Mount Carmel and dedicated to The Lady of the Place. In our hearts, Mary has taken her place as the first disciple and model for how we should live our lifes. So once a year, we come together and give thanks to her for the many blessings she has bestowed on us and acknowledge her great love for the Carmelites – religious and lay. Four days later on July 20th, the feast day of Elijah, our spiritual father, is celebrated. The prophet of fire was an inspiration to those first hermits back then and he still is today. Like Mary, he lived in the presence of God. He was aware of injustices and confronted evil. He grew frightened and tired, but he was always listening to that small whisper and drew his strength from his God.

  • Forming Carmelites
A new ‘Blessed’ in the Family Maria Crocifissa Curcio (1877-1957) Angela Bergström-Allen This article was published in Assumpta – the magazine of the Carmelite Third Order in Britain – in the Spring of 2005. Because of the death of Pope John Paul II, the beatification ceremony was in fact conducted by Pope Benedict XVI on 13th November 2005. Later this month, on 24th April in fact (the Pope’s health permitting), another member of our Carmelite Family will be declared ‘blessed’ and held up to the world as an example of holiness. Her name is Maria Crocifissa Curcio, and she was responsible for co-founding the Carmelite Missionary Sisters of St. Thérèse of Lisieux of the Child Jesus. This Servant of God was born Rosa Curcio in Sicily, by the sourthern tip of Italy, on 30th January in 1877. She was baptised in the church of S. Bartolomeo the next day, and received hold communion there for the first time in 1885. Though a bright and vivacious (even mischievous) girl, she was not encouraged to go to senior school, nor to church. However, deprived of school books, and perhaps as much out of stubbornness as of piety, at the age of just eleven years old Rosa read the life of St. Teresa of Jesus of Avila, and so first came into contact with Carmel. She later described how Teresa changed her view of life, by the way that great Carmelite mystic got to the heart of what really matters. A young member of the Third Order At the age of thirteen Rosa joined the Carmelite Third Order, making her profession as ‘Maria’ five years later in 1895.

Let us just emphasise, in the more general field of scientif- ic research, two attitudes which, it seems to us, should characterise the scientist, and especially the scientist who is a Christian. On the one hand, he must honestly consider the question of the earthly future of mankind and, as a re- sponsible person, help to prepare it, preserve it, and elimi- nate risks; we think that this solidarity with future genera- tions is a form of charity to which a great many men are sensitive today, in the framework of ecology. HOLY MEN AND WOMEN OF CARMEL A survey of saints from the earliest days of the Carmelite Family to the present By Johan Bergström-Allen, Veronica Errington, and Fr. Tony Lester, O.Carm. This is an expanded version of two modules from the Initial Formation Programme of the Carmelite Third Order (Secular) in the British Province, printed in Assumpta magazine in October & November 2006. We are all, to a certain extent, fascinated by saints: the spiritual heroes and heroines to whom we look for inspiration. In this summary we’ll meet specific individuals who trod Carmel’s pathway to God. It is important that Carmelites know about and love the earlier saints in our family; without their foundations Carmel would not be alive today. They are perfect examples of the flowering of God’s grace within the Carmelite tradition and have contributed significantly to the Order’s charism of prayer, community and service. We shall begin by looking briefly at saints who predated the existence of the Carmelite Order, but who have inspired our religious family. Carmelites regard Elijah – who lived over 800 years before Christ – not as founder of our Order but as our earliest inspiration. Since Elijah has been considered throughout our Formation Programme and especially in module 6 we shall briefly consider his calling of Elisha as disciple (1 Kings 19). Elijah casts his mantle over Elisha as he passes by with his oxen. No words are uttered, only the symbolic invitation to be clothed in the same garment as the prophet, to share his charism, his gifts, his lot.
