St Thérèse Calendar 2015 90th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CANONISATION OF ST THÉRÈSE OF LISIEUX t Thérèse of Lisieux departed this life on 30 September 1897. The flurry of events after her death – the publication of Story of a Soul and its impact, the miracles, Sthe influx of correspondence to the Lisieux Carmel and the growing number of pilgrims to the Lisieux Cemetery all contributed to the calls for her beatification and canonisation. Within a short number of years, for the time, she was canonised on 17 May 1925, ninety years ago. The year before her death - in the part of Story of a Soul in which she expounded on her Doctrine of Love - St Thérèse wrote ‘I would want to preach the gospel on all the five continents simultaneously and even to the remotest isles. I would be a missionary not for a few years only but from the beginning of creation until the consummation of the ages’. In June 1897 she wrote ‘I am not dying, I am entering into life’ and when her sister Sr Marie of the Sacred Heart said ‘what sorrow we’ll experience when you leave us’ St Thérèse said ‘Oh no you will see; it will be like a shower of roses’. Later in July that year she said ‘I feel that my mission is about to begin, my mission to make God loved as I love Him, to teach souls my little way – the way of spiritual childhood, the way of trust and absolute surrender’. How her wishes and premonitions have been realised! St Thérèse was declared Joint Patron of all missionaries and of the missions in 1927; Down the years countless numbers of people have continued to come to Lisieux to pray, to seek spiritual renewal and to walk in Thérèse’s footsteps; On the centenary of her death St Thérèse was made a Doctor of the Church in recognition of the wisdom of her doctrine of Love in the Church, her holiness and the worldwide dissemination of her message through her writings; St Thérèse’s Little Way of Trust and Surrender to God’s Merciful Love continues to spread. Story of a Soul is read in numerous languages; her relics travel the world; her message is on the worldwide web. St Thérèse’s name in religion St Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face expresses the heart of her spirituality centred on the contemplation of God’s Love revealed in the mysteries of the Incarnation and Redemption. (Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, General Audience, April 2011) As we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the canonisation of St Thérèse may we strive to love God as she did remembering her words: Perfect love means putting up with other peoples shortcomings Feeling no surprise at their weaknesses Finding encouragement even in the slightest evidence of good qualities in them.
