Lay Carmelite Community #578 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish July 2014 Newsletter I think it was Fr. John Malley, O. Carm., who said July is called the month of Carmel. If so, right he was. When you go into the Carmelite website, www.ocarm.org, you will see all of saints and blessed listed in their July Calendar. You’ll see that every week we have a saint or blessed as example of how to live, to remember, to pray to, read a book or even go on line to research their saintly lives. But first and foremost is the Carmelite’s principal feast day on July 16 in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. From the time the first hermits inhabited the holy mountain, we know that a chapel was built in the midst of their cells on Mount Carmel and dedicated to The Lady of the Place. In our hearts, Mary has taken her place as the first disciple and model for how we should live our lifes. So once a year, we come together and give thanks to her for the many blessings she has bestowed on us and acknowledge her great love for the Carmelites – religious and lay. Four days later on July 20th, the feast day of Elijah, our spiritual father, is celebrated. The prophet of fire was an inspiration to those first hermits back then and he still is today. Like Mary, he lived in the presence of God. He was aware of injustices and confronted evil. He grew frightened and tired, but he was always listening to that small whisper and drew his strength from his God. But we also have all these other saints and blesseds listed below that can serve as more inspiration this month and for always. July 4th - Bl.
