2019-20 Carmelite Liturgical Ordo 1 GENERAL NOTES This liturgical Ordo is for the friar, lay Carmelite and other communities of the British Province of Carmelites serving England, Scotland and Wales. The following points should be noted: 1. For this Liturgical Year from Advent 2019 until Advent 2020 Sunday and Festive Lectionary: Year A Weekday Lectionary: Cycle II 2. Abbreviations CS Carmelite Supplement (1987) NCS New Carmelite Supplement (1993) EP1 Evening Prayer 1 (First Vespers) 3. For the Liturgy of the Hours, numbers in this Ordo refer to the book of Morning and Evening Prayer printed by Collins. Page numbers to the Carmelite Supplements (also known as The Carmelite Proper of the Liturgy of the Hours) are those printed by the Institutum Carmelitanum in Rome. 4. On Ferias (ordinary days) and most Memorias, use the Psalter for the prescribed week in conjunction with the reference in the Morning and Evening Prayer book. For Feasts and Solemnities follow the indications given in the proper (the part towards the end of the books where the Feast days are arranged by date). 5. The anniversaries given are those of deceased friar members of the Province, of the Blackburn Nuns, and of the founders and leaders of The Leaven Secular Institute, together with others, including some Tertiaries, who have made a significant contribution to the life of the Carmelite Family in Britain. Local Lay Carmelite communities may wish to include the anniversaries of deceased members in their prayer. When a Carmelite dies it is usual for the Office of the Dead (found at the back of most Office books) to be prayed for him/her. 2 6. Italics indicate Carmelite Feasts and anniversaries. Information on the Order’s holy men and women can be found on: www.carmelite.org 7. Celebrations which are particular to a specific diocese are not included in this Ordo but normally will be found in the local diocesan directory, yearbook, or website. Feasts of the National Calendars of England, Wales and Scotland are included where appropriate. 8. Where no other celebration takes precedence, it is the custom of the Carmelite Order to commemorate Saturdays in honour of Our Lady. For the Office the ‘Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary’ and ‘Memoria of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday’ are printed in the various editions of the Office books. 9. Solemnities of the Lord the Epiphany, the Ascension and Corpus Christi have been transferred back to their traditional days, as per the decision of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales. These are shown in the Ordo, and Carmelites in Scotland may need to check the local liturgical calendar for such dates. 10. Other days of prayer recommended by the Order are: 5th June World Environment Day 10th December World Human Rights Day Where possible, the 16th of each month is a day of Prayer for Vocations. 3 NOTES FOR THE 2020 CARMELITE LITURGICAL ORDO The Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales (including the Liturgy Office) Holydays of Obligation: The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has agreed the following changes to take effect from 1st Sunday of Advent 2017. • Epiphany of the Lord to be celebrated on 6th January, except when this falls on a Saturday or a Monday when it is transferred to the adjacent Sunday. Therefore, in 2020 the Epiphany will be celebrated on Sunday 5th January. The Baptism of the Lord will be celebrated on Sunday 12th January. • Ascension of the Lord to be celebrated on Thursday in the 6th week of Easter. In 2020 this will be on the 21st May. Both are Holydays of Obligation. The other Holydays of Obligation for England and Wales remain the same. Further information regarding the liturgical calendar can be found on the website of The Liturgy Office of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England & Wales: www.liturgyoffice.org.uk The day on which the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Domini) has not been changed and it occurs in 2020 on Sunday 14th June. Additions to the Calendar: Mary, Mother of the Church, Obligatory Memoria, Monday after Pentecost – added to the General Roman Calendar. Our Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest, Feast, Thursday after Pentecost – added to the National Calendars of England and Wales. This Ordo has been compiled by Fr. Gerard Walsh O. Carm. and Mrs. Sharon Payne. Further copies of this Ordo can be obtained from the Provincial office. PDF copies also available on request. 4 THE CARMELITE CALENDAR Carmelite Solemnities, Feasts and Memorias are listed in the Ordo below (except when higher ranking observances preclude them this year). It is not the tradition in the communities of the British Province to observe Optional Memorias, except for that of St. Simon Stock because it is observed here as a Feast. They are, however, Memorias which are proper to the Carmelite Order, so for those who wish to commemorate them they are included in brackets within the Ordo when other celebrations do not preclude them. Memorias observed by the Discalced Carmelite Order (O.C.D.) but not by the Carmelite Order (O.Carm.) are not listed below, but can be found in the various printings of the Carmelite Supplement to the Breviary. • Father Malachi Martin's Visit to the Senate and Our Lady of Fatima
Dr. Robert Hickson 16 May 2016 Saint Brendan the Navigator (d.578) Saint Simon Stock (d. 1265) Saint John Nepomucene (d. 1393) Father Malachi Martin's Visit to the Senate and Our Lady of Fatima --Epigraphs-- On the Gift of Fear (Donum Timoris) as Part of the Order of Fear (Ordo Timoris): “One of the last verifiable [components] of the theses that define the image of man for our time holds that it is not seemly for man to be afraid. Waters from two sources are mingled in this attitude. One is an enlightened liberalism that relegates fearfulness to the realm of the unreal and in whose world view, accordingly, there is no room for fear except in a figurative sense. The other is an un-Christian stoicism that is secretly allied with both presumption and despair [i.e., the two forms of hopelessness, both of which are also grave sins against the Holy Ghost, in “the classical theology of the Church”] and [this stoicism] confronts in defiant invulnerability—without fear, but also without hope —the evils of existence, which it sees with admirable clarity. “The classical theology of the Church is especially removed from both the oversimplification of liberalism and the desperate rigidity of stoicism. It takes for granted that fears are a reality of human existence. And it takes equally for granted that man will respond to what is objectively fearful with fear [e.g., such as being permanently separated from the beloved, to include Our Beloved Lord and Vita Aeterna also with the Blessed Mother]....On the basis of this theology one must assume, then, that something is not quite in order [in the due and proportioned “ordo timoris”] when a man is afraid of nothing [“intimiditas”], and that the ideal of 'stoic' invulnerability and fearlessness is based on a false interpretation of man and reality itself.

  • Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 16 July 2017 • During
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel 16 July 2017 During the Crusades of the 12th century, a band of men – worn out by their battles over the Holy Land – decided to live the life of hermits on Mt. Carmel in northern Israel. There they lived separately in their own hermitages, but prayed together in a chapel they built and dedicated to Our Lady. Seeking to honor and devote themselves to Mary as their patroness, these men called themselves the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt. Carmel. In the 13th century, though, Saracens overran the Holy Land, and the Carmelites (as they came to be known) had to flee Mt. Carmel and return to their home countries in Europe. As they returned home and set up new Carmelite communities, they found the 13th c. Europe into which they were settling a difficult place, having to compete for precious resources with the dozens of new religious communities springing up all around. Added to this hardship was a division in the Carmelite Order as to whether they should cling to their roots as hermits or adapt to a mendicant way of life like that taken up by their contemporaries: the Franciscans and Dominicans. In the midst of these difficult times for the Carmelites, Our Lady appeared to the Carmelite’s prior general: St. Simon Stock, in Aylesford, England, on July 16, 1251. When she appeared to St. Simon Stock, Our Lady held out to him the brown scapular, and promised that whoever would wear the scapular devoutly throughout life would enjoy eternal salvation.

The Maronite Voice A Publication of the Maronite Eparchies in the USA Volume XI Issue No. VI June 2015 “Charity Begins at Home,” and So Does Mercy! ith the upcoming Holy Year, Pope Francis has asked us to take concrete steps to increase our mercy Wtowards ourselves and our families, as well as towards the Church and the world. Perhaps this may also be the time we seek the healing of some deep wounds in Church. I am speaking of the painful divisions that have harmed the Church. The Church was divided in the year 431, causing the separation of the Assyrian Church of the East. Then again we were divided in 451, with the separation of the Coptic, Armenian, and Syriac Churches (called Oriental Orthodox Churches). Division struck again in 1054, with the Eastern (Byzantine) Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. The final series of divisions took place in the time of the Protestant Reformation, with the growth of several Protestant, and later, Evangelical denominations. All these divisions continue today, but amazing progress has been made by the difficult yet persistent efforts of ecumenical dialogues. One such dialogue has produced extraordinary results, namely the Oriental Orthodox/Catholic Dialogue. Here below is the summary of that yearly joint statement. The entire text can be read at: http://www.vatican.va/roman_curia/pontifical_councils/ch rstuni/anc-orient-ch-docs/rc_pc_chrstuni_doc_20150513_ exercise-communion_en.html. It is long, but it is worth the read! Summary and Conclusion 69. “The dialogue has examined in detail the nature of the relationships that existed among the member churches in the Saints Peter and Paul by Fr.

The first parable concerns weed an AM: 10.30-11.30 enemy has sown among a farmer’s wheat crop. The owner’s servants PM: 3.00-4.00 want to remove the weeds, but the man tells them to leave them alone Saturdays: until the harvest. Part of the problem was that darnel and wheat look AM: 10.30-12.30 very alike as they grow, and so the workers could easily pull up the PM: 2.00-4.00 wrong plant. Secondly, in the soil the roots could become entangled and so pulling up a weed could also pull up a good plant. This parable is a Devotions at 2.30pm reminder that good and bad people, saints and sinners, are found in life Monday: Miraculous but, while they live side by side in this life, they will be judged and Medal – Rosary & separated in the next, and it is God who ultimately decides because the Benediction Kingdom belongs to him and not to us, though we are invited.
