FIA-Clergy-Letter Dear 2020 Presidential Candidates - As faith leaders of diverse traditions from across the United States, we have been organizing, responding, and offering pastoral care to the members of our congregations and communities that have been under direct attack by repressive immigration policies and harmful rhetoric. Our shared faith values of recognizing the dignity of all, family, community and compassion inspire this work and compel us to reach out to you. Our country is crying out for bold moral leadership that can move us into a future where all of our siblings feel full belonging in our country. Too often, hatred and xenophobia are at the center of the current public discourse about immigration policy. We expect all candidates in the 2020 presidential cycle to lay out a narrative and policy framework that recognizes the humanity and suffering of our immigrant siblings as a first step toward healing the wounds of hatred and xenophobia. We are writing to urge you to speak out clearly and boldly in your presidential campaign on behalf of immigrants, refugees and asylum-seekers in this time of increasing fear-mongering and growing nationalism in our country. We urge you to take a moral stance as presidential candidate to unravel the immigration enforcement system and protect all immigrant families. Specifically, we are asking all candidates: • Push back on the anti-immigrant rhetoric which demonizes and divides. Remind the American people that we are a nation of immigrants which has always benefited from the talents, contributions and hard work of migrants and refugees. Challenge us to remember that compassion and solidarity have always made America stronger, while fear and division only serve to weaken us as a people. Help us to imagine a stronger, brighter future – together. • Cut funding for immigration enforcement (including additional detention beds, more agents and increased border militarization) within the FY 2020 budget and all future budgets. Reinvest savings into programs that will strengthen family and community life for everyone. • Lay out a plan to use existing executive branch resources and authorities to reduce deportation and immigration enforcement while seeking federal immigration reform that will provide a path to citizenship for the millions of immigrants who are already part of the fabric of our communities and addresses the need for a regional response to the underlying poverty and violence that are driving the exodus of asylum-seekers from Central America. We believe moral leadership on immigration requires the points outlined above as a centerpiece of your campaign, and call on all candidates to deliver a major speech on your immigration platform. We believe that, by leading from a place of love and compassion, you can help begin to heal the wounds of racism and xenophobia which have diminished us all.     Pacem in terris Peace and Freedom Award Saturday, April 2, 2016 DAVENPORT, IOWA photo by Cathy Bolkcom Venerable Thích Nhâ´t Ha.nh Venerable Thích Nhâ´t Ha.nh, a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist Master, teacher, author and peace activist, is honored for his lifelong commitment to peace and for his inspired, dedicated work to bridge Eastern and Western spiritual traditions. The Vietnam War forced Nhâ´t Ha.nh (Thay for Teacher) and the entire Buddhist community to confront “the question of whether to adhere to the contemplative life, meditating in their monasteries, or to help those suffering around them.” In 1965 Thay responded by developing socially “Engaged Buddhism,” which incorporated contemplative Buddhist practices with “Compassionate Action.” He founded the School of Youth for Social Services (SYSS), a grassroots student relief organization that practiced Compassionate Action by rebuilding bombed villages, burying the dead and establishing schools and medical centers. In that same year, he wrote to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., imploring him to speak out against the Vietnam War. As Thay’s peace efforts escalated, so did the political risks. Thay was forced to flee Vietnam after an assassination attempt. He took refuge in France after his 1968 exile and established the Plum Village Sangha where he became one of the fathers of the Mindfulness movement. He also began teaching in the U.S. where he joined Dr. King (who nominated him for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize) and other peace colleagues to advocate for an end to the Vietnam War. As the Buddhist peace delegate, Thay witnessed the signing of the 1973 Paris Peace Accords.

This bill violates our moral principles of equality, justice, and fairness. We call on Congress to oppose the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act due to our strong belief that this bill is fiscally irresponsible, endangers our country’s economic health, and disproportionately benefits the wealthy at the expense of vulnerable people and low-income families. Moreover, we have grave concerns over the manner in which such a large and complex bill, affecting the entire economy and millions of Americans, is being recklessly rushed through Congress. The Senate Tax Bill does not reflect the priorities of the faith community. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act fails to include proposals that lift struggling workers and families out of poverty. The bill fails to expand the Earned Income Tax Credit even though millions of low income workers are currently taxed into poverty because they do not qualify for the credit. Likewise, the Child Tax Credit is significantly expanded for high income workers but not for low-income working families. Worse, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminates the child tax credit for immigrant taxpayers whose children do not have social security numbers.

We are writing to you today about another matter of urgency if world peace is ever to be realized: the elimination of nuclear weapons. This letter requests that our government take specific steps in that regard during the Preparatory Committee of the Non-Proliferation Treaty meeting, 28 April – 9 May 2014, at the United Nations. As the leadership of Catholic communities and organizations in the United States, we are sending this letter in collaboration with the World Council of Churches and its member churches. It is an inter-regional call for action by a variety of churches that are also contacting their governments. We would like to begin by expressing our disappointment that the United States did not take part in the 2nd International Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons in Nayarit, Mexico, in February. The meeting clarified critical nuclear challenges by bringing together a significant cross-section of the international community for an evidence-based accounting of what nuclear weapons do to people, societies and the environment. It seems clear that similar evidence-based accountability is very much needed at the forthcoming NPT Preparatory Committee. As you are aware, the meeting is charged with assessing progress on the NPT Action Plan of 2010. While the plan strikes a much- needed balance between disarmament and non-proliferation, four years have passed with very little evidence of follow-through on disarmament.

A theologian and Dominican priest, he currently serves Provost & Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs as the John Cardinal O’Hara Professor of Theology at the St. Ambrose University University of Notre Dame. He divides his time between his parish church in Lima and the classroom at Notre Dame. OPENING PRAYER He is recognized as a prominent figure in Latin American Cantor Gail P. Karp Catholicism.     Sister Dorothy Marie Hennessey, peace activist, dies DUBUQUE, Iowa – Franciscan Sister Dorothy Marie Hennessey, a teacher turned activist who made national news at age 88 when she was sentenced to federal prison for trespassing at a Georgia military base, died Jan. 24 at the age of 94. The stream of friends who came to Mount St. Francis Chapel for her wake and Jan. 28 funeral celebrated the influence and positive impact they said she had in their lives. Franciscan Sister Nancy Miller noted that Sister Dorothy Marie believed prayer and politics – in the true sense – went hand in hand. She often said, “I am convinced more than ever that we should get into today’s political life with Gospel motivation.” In 2001, Sister Dorothy Marie and her sibling, Franciscan Sister Gwen Hennessey, then 68, were sentenced, along with 24 others, to six months in the federal prison in Pekin, Ill., for trespassing at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga., as part of the annual vigil to close the School of the Americas in November 2000. The School of the Americas is now named the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation; it is a combat training school for military officers from Central and South America. Human rights workers and missionaries, including the nuns’ brother, Maryknoll Father Ron Hennessey, reported that numerous murders and human rights violations occurring in El Salvador and Guatemala were perpetrated by graduates of the school. When a judge offered to commute Sister Dorothy Marie’s sentence to “motherhouse arrest,” she replied, “I’d rather not be singled out.
