Mongrel Media Presents THE NOTEBOOK (Le Grand Cahier) Directed by János Szász A film by János Szász (104 min., Hungary, 2013) Language: Hungarian Distribution Publicity Bonne Smith Star PR 1028 Queen Street West Tel: 416-488-4436 Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M6J 1H6 Fax: 416-488-8438 Tel: 416-516-9775 Fax: 416-516-0651 E-mail: [email protected] E-mail: [email protected] www.mongrelmedia.com High res stills may be downloaded from http://www.mongrelmedia.com/ SYNOPSIS Towards the end of World War II, people in big cities are at the mercy of air raids and death by starvation. A desperate young mother leaves her 13‐year‐old twin sons at their grandmother’s house in the country, despite the fact that this grandmother is a cruel and bestial alcoholic. The villagers call her “the Witch” because she is rumored to have poisoned her husband long ago. Previously pampered, the twins must learn how to survive alone in their new, rural surroundings. They realize that the only way to cope with the absurd and inhumane world of adults and war is to become completely unfeeling and merciless. By learning to free themselves from hunger, pain and emotion, they will be able to endure future hardships. So they begin their own series of studies: they fortify their spirits by reading the Bible and learning foreign languages. They practice every day to harden their bodies and minds. They hold their hands over flames, cut their legs, arms and chests with a knife and pour alcohol right on their wounds. They desensitize themselves to insults and learn to ignore the more insidious appeals of sentiment and love.

Danish Film Days 2012 23rd-29th of March 2012 Splendid Palace Cinema, Elizabetes iela 61, Riga, Latvia The opening of the Danish Film Days and screening of 'In a better world' on 23. March Susanne Bier's 'In A Better World', Thomas Vinterberg's 'Submarino', Nicolas Wind Refn's 'Valhalla Rising' and last but not least 'A Family' by Pernille Fischer Christensen. In A Better World - Opening film Caterogy: Drama Director: Susanne Bier Composer: Johan Söderqvist Apperances: Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyhrberg, Ulrich Thomsen Country: Denmark DK Release: 2010 Duration: 113 min. Language: Danish / Swedish / English. English subtitles. Latvian headphone translation. IN A BETTER WORLD sets out to explore the limitations we encounter in trying to control our society as well as our personal lives. It asks whether our own “advanced” culture is the model for a better world, or whether the same disarray found in lawlessness is lurking beneath surface of our civilization. Are we immune to chaos, or obliviously teetering on the verge of disorder? Anton is a doctor who commutes between his home in an idyllic town in Denmark, and his work at an African refugee camp. In these two very different worlds, he and his family are faced with conflicts that lead them to difficult choices between revenge and forgiveness. Anton and his wife Marianne, who have two young sons, are separated and struggling with the possibility of divorce. Their older, ten-year- old son Elias is being bullied at school, until he is defended by Christian, a new boy who has just moved from London with his father, Claus.

  • Eddie: the Sleepwalking Cannibal
Presents EDDIE: THE SLEEPWALKING CANNIBAL A FILM BY BORIS RODRIGUEZ Starring Thure Lindhardt In English 83 min., Canada/Denmark To download hi-res images and video clips: http://www.musicboxfilms.com/eddie--the-sleepwalking-cannibal-movies-57.php NY Press Contact: LA/Online Press Contact: Emma Griffiths Clay Dollarhide Emma Griffiths PR Ginsberg/ Libby 917-806-0599 323-645-6819 [email protected] [email protected] SYNPOSIS Thure Lindhardt (Keep the Lights On) stars in this quirky horror-comedy as Lars, a former darling of the art scene slipping away into the land of has-beens and struggling with lack of inspiration. When Lars’ art dealer Ronny arranges a teaching job in a small town as a “therapeutic measure” to stir up his creative juices, things don’t quite turn out as planned. At first, life in the peaceful small town seems rosy, as he settles in and impresses beautiful fellow colleague Leslie by taking in the brawny, mute Eddie after the latter’s caregiver passes away. But Lars soon discovers that the façade of serenity hides something unimaginable: Eddie suffers from a rare form of sleepwalking that transforms him from a docile, cereal-obsessed art student into a ravenous sleepwalking cannibal. Initially horrified by Eddie’s dark secret, Lars becomes enthralled by the not-so-gentle giant: at long last, here’s the muse he’d been searching for! Exceptional art comes at a very high price...and how far is Lars willing to go for his next masterpiece? Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal is a fresh, clever satire about artistic inspiration that pushes boundaries with its unique blend of offbeat humor, twisted friendships, sweet-hearted romance, and the gory realities of sleepwalking cannibalism.

  • The Vanishing and Nightwatch
The Vanishing and Nightwatch By Steven Jay Schneider Spring 2002 Issue of KINEMA REPACKAGING RAGE: THE VANISHING AND NIGHTWATCH It’s the same movie, only completely different. It follows the same plot, except where it changes everything. - Desmond Howe, on The Vanishing(1) As for the work of Bornedal, I’d best reserve comment. ...Maybe he looked at the final cut and said, ”Mik bortaagë dåntü ødån!” (”This is f...in’ great!”). Maybe it’s a great film in Denmark, but it’s a terrible, terrible movie in America. - Shane Ham, on Nightwatch(2) Sometimes the devil is in the details. - Barney Cousins (Jeff Bridges) in The Vanishing In 1988, Spoorloos, a Dutch thriller directed by George Sluizer, premiered in the Netherlands to packed houses and rave reviews. Six years later, in 1994, Ole Bornedal’s Danish thriller Nattevagten was released in its home country, also to critical and commercial acclaim. Besides evincing a clear Hitchcockian influence, both pictures were made on relatively low budgets, both exhibit a bizarre sense of humour, and both took home multiple awards at prestigious European film festivals. In 1993, The Vanishing, a big-budget Hollywood thriller produced by 20th Century Fox, made its debut on screens throughout the United States after a great deal of fanfare. Five years later, Dimension Films (the so-called ”genre division” of Miramax), released a thriller of its own entitled Nightwatch. Both films were financial and critical failures, condemned for their inability to generate more than a modicum ofsuspense. That is not all they have in common: both films star big-name actors, both are distinctly unfunny, and both were completely forgotten during awards time.

  • In a Better World Directed by Susanne Bier 2011 Suanne Bier Is a Very
Translation from Greek to English: In a Better World directed by Susanne Bier 2011 Suanne Bier is a very important director who has been closely connected with the Dogma 95 movement, but who took a different direction in her later career, directing a line of movies that were well received by the audience with several awards, but that also received negative reviews. In 2011 the movie, “In a Better world” won an Oscar. While the title of the movie in Danish is “The Revenge”, the film was promoted in Greece with the title “Ισως αύριο- Maybe tomorrow”. The diversity in the title might insinuate the complexity of the issues in this moralistic- philosophic movie as well as the many levels of the scenario by Anders Thomas Jensen. The story takes place in 2 different film spaces – in a refugee camp in Africa in the dessert and in a Northeuropean town in the outskirts of Denmark where daily and dull routines are unfolded. The protagonists are 2 fathers with their sons. Anton, a doctor working at a refugee camp in Africa (played by Michael Persbrandt) and father of the 10 year old Elias (played by Markus Rigaard) is constantly absent in the life of his son as well as in his marriage with another doctor (played by Trine Dyrholm). Claus (played by Ulrich Thomsen) is a businessman who has recently lost his wife from cancer and who is facing the anger and accusation from his son Kristian (played by William John Nielsen) because of his constant absence. The parents, who are mentally absent to their sons while occupied with their professional lives, are incapable of being part of the boys personal lives.

  • Dogme 95 Cinema Series to Premiere at MAD on Occasion of Movement’S 20Th Anniversary
Dogme 95 Cinema Series to Premiere at MAD on Occasion of Movement’s 20th Anniversary The Director Must Not Be Credited: 20 Years of Dogme 95 explores lasting effects of iconoclastic movement New York, NY (January 21, 2015)—This March, the Museum of Arts and Design is pleased to present The Director Must Not Be Credited: 20 Years of Dogme 95, a cinema series exploring the enduring legacy of the game-changing film movement. Premiering on March 13, 2015, the twentieth anniversary of Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg’s revolutionary manifesto, the series features nine, rarely screened films recognized by the Dogme 95 committee—many of which never received US distributions. Together, these films highlight the growth of Dogme 95 into a worldwide movement that spanned genres and forever changed the ways in which narrative feature films are made. On March 13, 1995, Lars von Trier showered the audience of a conference celebrating the 100th anniversary of cinema with pamphlets outlining his newly crafted Dogme 95 manifesto. Co-written with fellow filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg, the manifesto, dubbed the Vow of Chastity, outlined ten dogmatic rules that encouraged a return to traditional values of story, acting and theme, embraced emerging video technology, and banned the use of elaborate special effects in cinema. At its core, the Dogme manifesto aimed to restore a transparency to filmmaking and challenge mainstream cinematic conventions of the time. “Dogme 95 is arguably one of the most important cinematic movements since the French New Wave,” says Jake Yuzna, MAD’s Director of Public Programs.
