4 Introduction

Experiencing difficulties in life? Feng Shui 風水 may be able to provide some answers. The Chinese believe that there are five levels of fortune that can be used to benefit human beings. The best type of fortune is received through good karma bestowed at birth. The second type is from luck generated during one’s life. The third type is manifested through the proper application of Feng Shui. The fourth type is developed by being of good morals, character, and virtue. The fifth type is achieved through a proper education. Combining these levels together can bring about good fortune almost each and every year, but only if applied correctly. Since good karma and luck cannot be controlled by humans alone, Feng Shui becomes an important component – but only if one takes the time to learn exactly what it is and how it works.

What is Feng Shui and How Can it Help Me?

The movement of the planets and other heavenly bodies in the solar system has a profound impact on the earth and its inhabitants: they affect the changing of the tides, growth seasons for plants, mating periods for animals, atmospheric pressure changes which result in varying weather patterns, and the like. The effect on human beings, while subtle in nature, is no different.

Feng Shui is the ancient art of Chinese geomancy that utilizes symbols, astrological signs, ancient mathematics, and directional analysis to uncover prosperity and minimize problems affecting human beings each year, month, day, and even hour based on the flow of energy through the universe. Properly aligning one’s living space and office with the cycles of nature can bring about good fortune and benefit individuals, families, organizations, teams, countries, and businesses alike.

5 In the Chinese almanac, there are a number of cycles used to track the movement of time and space. Astrologically, there are twelve animal signs, each with five different character types, based on the elemental qualities of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. This sixty year cycle repeats in sets of three Yuan 元 to complete 180-year cycles. From a Feng Shui perspective, each Yuan is divided into nine cycles of 20 years each, called Yun 運, which set into motion the directional fortunes for any given year, based on a complex combination of two other ancient Chinese mathematical formulas, the Ho Tu 河圖 (illustrated above, left), which is based on the Eight Trigrams of the Yi Jing 易經, and the Lo Shu 洛書 Nine Palaces (illustrated on the right) which is often referred to in the West as the Magic Square. These two maps, when properly utilized in conjunction with the movement of the zodiac, can be used to predict events, design homes, manage floor plans, influence important decisions, and help with anything else that requires some foresight and direction.

Feng Shui can take into account the position of your home and office related to beneficial and problematic compass directions and the birth dates and times of those dwelling within it. Each component is analyzed to determine the fate and energy flow within the home or office over the course of any given period. While private consultations can be arranged to ensure maximum effect and understanding, the purpose of this document is to provide some basic guidance that can be useful in planning for the New Year and beyond. Good luck!

6 How to Use this Book

Follow these basic instructions to reap your Chinese and Feng Shui fortune in 2010:

Determine your Zodiac Sign

Select your animal from the Astrology Tables on p. 52, based on your year of birth, noting that the Chinese calendar extends from February 4 – February 3 each year. Therefore, a baby born on January 24, 2010 is still considered to belong to the sign of the .

Advanced practitioners may decide to use the lunar year as the basis for your sign selection; as compared to the static solar year noted above, the start of this period changes each year and is generally calculated as the second new moon following the Winter Solstice. In this case, a baby born between February 14, 2010 and February 2, 2011 would fall under the sign of the Tiger. One must understand that Feng Shui is a very precise art with many levels and dimensions – as such, practice diligently and soon you will understand more of the advanced terminology embedded herein.

In the ancient times, before language was invented, people had difficulty keeping track of time. Since the lives of man and animals was so close at the time, the Chinese decided to name each year with an animal. The divides every birth year into twelve (12) animal signs, of which there are five types each, resulting in a total of sixty (60) astrological cycles. Each animal has general characteristics as described in the pages to follow; remember that although different years and months have various attributes, the sign can (and will) embody the entire spectrum of positive and negative traits. When reviewing a sign, be sure to understand all aspects so as to grasp the breadth of possibilities that represents each section of the zodiac.

7 MOUSE (SHU 鼠 ): the first sign of the zodiac dwells in the North and is said to have bit the net between Heaven and Earth, opening the communication floodgates for Yin 陰 and Yang 陽 . As such, they are smart people and fast talkers; they possess the ability to develop large business networks and generally have good dealings with people. Unfortunately, they may tend towards nervous behavior and can take on too many responsibilities, burdening their existence and creating unnecessary stress.

Living in the North- Northeast, the Ox is a strong, physical being who carries heavy loads for others, never tiring or losing stamina unless he or she becomes bored or lazy. Oxen can become very stubborn at times and often have difficulty expressing themselves, especially in matters of love, relationships, and marriage, but they are good friends to have indeed.

9 TIGER (HU 虎): the third sign of the zodiac resides in the East-Northeast and is both a powerful nurturer and natural leader, being so quick and agile in movement. Sometimes they cannot see the difference between right and wrong, due to their one-sided pursuits. The Tiger must work hard to remain faithful in relationships and has to learn to control his or her feelings so as to avoid hurting others. The ancient Chinese believed that Tigers were so adept at teaching life skills to others that they take care of all children – not just their own.

These individuals have natural talent – they just need to develop a strong mind to harness their full potential.

Because of this, Dragons, which live in the East-Southeast, must be careful not to let this all go to their heads or have it lead to unrealistic expectations of the world or those around them. But sometimes they can get overly emotional and controlling – because of this, every Horse needs a rider, someone who can help direct their talents so that goals and objectives can be reached. Without a team approach, the Horse can become impatient, repeating mistakes over and over again.

14 RAM/SHEEP (YANG 羊): the eighth sign is symbolic of the mountaineer, a solitary creature that is not afraid to butt horns with others to advance in life. Rams dwell in the South-Southwest and possess incredible artistic talent, good looks, and an innate sense of charm. They can sometimes overly blame others for their problems, and seem to have a love-hate relationship as it concerns affairs of the heart. Be careful of those horns, Ram, and stop worrying about how green the grass on the other side may look from your vantage point.

They have sharp minds, strong support systems, excel in school, and love to run around outside. Being such a social creature and the smartest of the signs, they can often develop superiority complexes and large egos. 16 /PHOENIX (JI 雞 ): the tenth sign of the zodiac resides in the West and is a natural performer always outspoken in life, begging others to give them the attention they feel is so deserved – and rightly so. Roosters were born up for the task and always finish the job at hand, even if they have to fight their way through it. At the same time, they are sincere, compassionate, and generous creatures. Because they are often unable to keep their mouths shut, the Rooster creates many obstacles for themselves, particularly with others as it relates to business, love, and family squabbles.

These people make for good, reliable, hard-working, and loyal friends or community leaders; they also possess special senses that allow them to sniff out potential problems or threats to the natural laws of nature. As such, these people live a long, enjoyable, even- keeled life, oftentimes supported by others. They always enjoy poking fun at those who do not have it so easy. 19 Determine Your Nine Palace Star

Select your Nine Palace Star from the Astrology Tables on p. 52, based on your gender and year of birth, noting that the Chinese calendar extends from February 4 – February 3 each year. As described in step one, you may also use the lunar New Year as the basis for your star selection, which is generally the 2nd new moon following the Winter Solstice on December 21st of each year.

The Nine Star system divides every birth year into different palaces, resulting in mixed possibilities each year in sets of nine that are governed by a greater cycle of twenty years (Yun 運), and an even-larger 180-year cycle (Yuan 元). A number from one (1) to nine (9) is assigned to each birth year, and varies according to gender. Each Nine Palace Star has a primary position and corresponding direction, as illustrated in the following chart:

SE S SW

4 green 9 purple 2 black 四綠 九紫 二黑 巽 離 坤

3 jade 5 yellow 7 red E 三碧 五黃 七赤 W 震 中 兌

8 white 1 white 6 white 八白 一白 六白 艮 坎 乾

NE N NW

20 General characteristics of the Nine Palace stars are as follows:

One (1) White: this palace corresponds to the 一白水 Northern direction and the element of Water. These people have a particular combination of prenatal and postnatal intelligence that lends well to career success and advancement, particularly since these individuals are also very ambitious. This position corresponds to the entirety of Winter and culminates with the sunlight that breaks out at the start of each Spring. As such, these individuals have difficulty early in life, but from middle age forward, they become very lucky and successful and it is easy for them to reach their goals and desires. However, because this sign easily encounters difficulty and danger, such people must develop a strong conscious to overcome life’s obstacles.

Two (2) Black: this palace corresponds to the 二黑土 Southwest direction and the element of Earth. These people often become kings or high-ranking officials; however, this does not mean the alignment is all good. Instead, one should think of this palace as representing premium soil: if you plant good seeds in it, great results will occur, while if you plant bad ones, it will result in the worst of the worst. These individuals are thus very powerful (physically speaking) but must be careful of what they foster in life for they can bring about growth or destruction in equal measures.

Three (3) Jade: this palace corresponds to the 三碧木 East direction and the element of Wood. Individuals born under this palace possess high levels of integrity and kindness; as such, others often trust them. This position can be likened to the sun rising in the East, which means that their Yang energy is very strong; thus, be careful that one’s rising energy does not lead to gossiping, which will cause relationship problems and difficulties at school or in the workplace. For men, be especially careful of explosive outbursts. If these

21 people work on developing their kindness as much as possible, they can minimize such issues.

Four (4) Green: this palace corresponds to the 四綠木 Southeast direction and to the element of Wood. These individuals are kind, internally strong, and possess a good combination of practicality and intelligence. Because the Eastern Wood star comes to life in this palace, these individuals correspond to the springtime and are good communicators. They have societal reputations because the Yang energy gradually progresses as the sun rises higher into the sky. Due to their kindness, loyalty, and faithfulness, such people will unavoidably be taken advantage of and lose fortune through such means. They are hard working when young and reap their best luck only after middle age.

Five (5) Yellow: being in the center and 五黃土 corresponding to the element of Earth, this sign corresponds to the land as opposed to individuals. As such, men (who are Yang) are assigned the Two (2) Black star, which corresponds to Yin Earth, while women (who are Yin) are assigned the Eight (8) White star, which corresponds to Yang Earth. One can consider these Two (2) and Eight (8) star individuals to be even more physically rooted than traditional Two (2) and Eight (8) star alignments, having originally come from the center position.

Six (6) White: this palace corresponds to the 六白金 Northeast direction and the element of Metal. Because this star sits in the position of the trigram that corresponds to Heaven, these individuals are so peaceful and safe that even animals would come to their door looking for friendship. They have a smooth life and are looked up to by others with reverence and respect. These individuals have lots of luck, but can often lose face when their patience with others dissipates. They can also become lazy and sometimes lack endurance.

22 Therefore, this palace will experience failures unless they stay aggressive and active in trying to harness their seemingly limitless potential.

Seven (7) Red: this palace corresponds to the 七赤金 Western direction and the element of Metal. These individuals are skilled in communications and are liked by everyone. They know how to dress well and often have a noble appearance. This alignment has a lot of youthful exuberance connected to it, which can bring about joy and happiness. However, they must be careful of talking too much and gossiping, because they will surely make mistakes along the way and thus can easily attract disputes, fueling arguments with others.

Eight (8) White: this palace corresponds to the 八白土 Northeastern direction and the element of Earth. These people are symbolized by the slow rising of the sun in that one must wait out the darkness of night to see the dawn. In the same way, these individuals should start out small and slowly grow in potential, keeping fast to one’s beliefs. Like putting coins into a bank account, or watching a small hill become a mountain, these people must slowly cultivate their fortune, which blossoms nicely at the end. Otherwise, there will be problems, especially with others, so be sure to set expectations for the future and work towards achieving them in a diligent manner.

Nine (9) Purple: this palace corresponds to the 九紫火 Southern direction and the element of Fire. The Nine Purple is considered the most Yang palace; thus, it not only goes straight up, but also makes and generates Yin energy as it turns to its opposite. From a social perspective, this means these people can be hot or cold; in fact, their actions are not always very practical and they often say things that have unintended consequences. These fiery people can get angry often and easily go to extremes when they are pulled back and forth from one ideal to another. If individuals born under this palace are not

23 careful, they will fall into other’s traps, particularly in their early years, when they are young, weak, and impractical. Those born in this palace must change and become more humble, with mutual respect for others, in order to gather their good fortune, for which an unlimited supply exists.

Determine Your Trigram

Once you have determined your Nine Palace Star, you will be able to identify your Yi Jing 易經 trigram, which sits in one of the eight main compass directions. Each trigram has a symbol associated with it; such an image is called a Gua 卦 in Chinese. It is said that all things in the universe are derived from various combinations of the eight Gua, illustrating the idea that positive energy can be gathered by looking deep within each of the eight main compass directions. Each person in life has a direct correspondence to one of the eight trigrams, and it can tell you a lot about what is ‘inside’ yourself and how you are perceived by others.

General characteristics of the Eight Trigrams are as follows:

The Northwest and Six (6) White star embody the vital spirit of the trigram Qian 乾, which represents Heaven and is symbolic of the pure Yang energy that is as clear as the sky above and breath within, correlating to strength and power. Qian is a location where one can benefit from spiritual endeavors and doing good deeds for others, as it contains the essential truth of our existence. It is said to represent friends and the community, and corresponds to the head and lungs, the element of metal, and the father of the family.

24 The Southwest and Two (2) Black star embody the substance of the trigram Kun 坤, which represents Earth and corresponds to pure Yin; it is thus obedient in its actions of following, providing a natural response to heavenly energy that comes from above. This is a direction, like the center, where one can accomplish physical tasks. Kun is like the great force that exists within the shadows; it is the hidden and dark quality of life that opposes the bright light of Yang energy. This direction, being extensive and powerful, can sometimes lead to injury and disease. It represents marriage and relationships, corresponding to the abdomen and womb, the element of earth, and the mother of the family.

The West and Seven (7) Red star embody the power of the trigram Dui 兌, which represents the Lake and is a direct passageway to joy, happiness, and delight via the process of change and transformation. Dui is a gate into the deeper sections of the body, corresponding to change and renewal, which leads to gratification. One can use this direction to lift up, raise, and lighten the soul, reaching high and lofty places. Representing children and one’s descendents, this trigram corresponds to the mouth and chest, the element of metal, and the youngest daughter of the family.

The Northeast and Eight (8) White star embodies the power of the trigram Gen 艮 , which represents the Mountain and is symbolic of a person turning inward, such as when one meditates to quiet the mind. This area is like a set gathering time, where one has the ability to carry inner peace and quietude in the hand; storing energy to the pace of a drum, one can present something auspicious, like birds flying in a flock. This direction therefore represents knowledge and intellect, corresponding to the hands and arms, the element of earth, and the youngest son in the family.

25 The South and Nine (9) Purple star embody the power of the trigram Li 離, which represents Fire and is symbolic of the defining character of all living things - their perception and ability to understand nature. Li is like the extreme blossoming of life that began as a tiny seed first sprouting in the depths of winter; now is when the most glorious of essences spring forth. This direction is where you can accomplish things in life, representing fame and rank; it corresponds to the eyes and heart, the element of fire, and the middle daughter of the family.

The North and One (1) White star embody the power of the trigram Kan 坎 , which represents Water and is symbolic of darkness as in a crisis or danger, such as a traveler attempting to cross an abyss. This direction represents the birth of energy, like a fresh life at its early beginnings. Kan is like a seed spouting up from the earth, fostering life by its nature of containing Heavenly energy. This is a place to foster creativity and ideas, and thus represents career endeavors; it corresponds to the ears and Kidneys, the element of water, and middle son of the family.

The East and Three (3) Jade star embody the power of the trigram Zhen 震, which represents Thunder and is symbolic of a decisive moment in nature that can be observed and noted as the start of a cycle. Zhen is like a pool of energy, completely whole in its ability to quickly influence rule and principle in a responsive manner. This is a place where one can build something from nothing, a location where seeds are nourished and sprouted; it therefore represents the family and one’s ancestors, corresponding to the legs and feet, the element of wood, and the oldest son in the family.

26 The Southeast and Four (4) Green star embody the power of the trigram Xun 巽, which represents Wind and is symbolic of a peaceful nation, carried out through the gentle, penetrating nature of persuasion. Xun embodies the power of the cyan Dragon, reflecting clearly as it soars through the clouds in meditative fashion, influencing life from afar. This is a location where one can accumulate things; it therefore represents money and wealth and corresponds to the hips, thighs, and buttocks, the element of wood, and the oldest daughter of the family.

Compare Signs

Once you know your sign, star, and trigram, you can begin to learn how your alignment integrates with the current year. Read the 2010 Annual Forecast on pp. 31-42, which explains how the year affects all individuals, and learn how your astrological sign compares to the current year’s alignment using the Compatibility Charts on pp. 53-55.

If the current year is an animal whom you have a favorable partnership with, good fortune will be available during the year for you to reap. For example, Horses, Dogs, and Boars will have good luck in 2010, due to the fact that they pair harmoniously with the Tiger. However, if the animal of the year opposes you, or opposes one of your animal’s good friends, difficulties and obstacles will appear during the year that you will have to navigate through. By knowing this beforehand, you can plan for misfortune and hopefully avoid it entirely. For example, those born under the sign of the Monkey will have difficulty in 2010 because it sits in opposition to the Tiger. If you do not have a direct relationship with the year’s sign, your fortune will usually be derived in one of two ways – either how your sign’s “friends” relate to the year’s animal or the direction in which your own animal resides. There is also the presence of stars in the sky that influence each of these two main positions

27 through the twelve months of the year; for this, you will need to contact Eco-Med for a personal Feng Shui consultation, as it falls beyond the scope of this text.

From a Feng Shui perspective, you can use symbols and the directional correspondences of the animals to assist you during the year. For example, because the Dog has a favorable pairing with the Tiger, good fortune will exist in the Northwestern direction of your home, bedroom, or office. If you are a Dog, you can potentially double your fortune during the year by using your native direction to enhance your good relationship with the Tiger. Conversely, the Tiger can help protect him or herself during their year by carrying or wearing a Horse or Dog amulet.

When choosing how to utilize symbols and directions, always remember to use personal creativity and insight in a logical and thoughtful manner. While there are really no right or wrong ways to apply Feng Shui, you can learn over time how to maximize good fortune and minimize challenges each year.

Compare Stars and Trigrams

Having compared your individual sign to the annual sign, one must now do the same with your Nine Palace alignment and Eight Trigram direction. Read the current year’s Feng Shui Forecast on pp. 43-50, comparing results with both your Trigram’s native direction and Nine Palace birth star using the Compatibility Charts on pp. 53-55.

Although your palace and main direction never change (as it is set at birth), your fortune changes as your star moves through phases of good, bad, and magical positions each year, and through the greater cycles of twenty (20) and 180 years. At the same time, new stars travel into your native direction, bringing about a mix of positive and negative results as well. The amount of fortune

28 gathered each year depends on how you travel through these oceans of changes by integrating two key concepts in Feng Shui: where you are coming from and where you are going. First, find out what is happening in your native Trigram’s direction (e.g., the original location of your birth palace on p. 20); second, discover what is happening in the direction your Nine Palace star occupies for the year (see p. 43). For example, a female born in 1973, who corresponds to the Six (6) White star, will find good fortune coming her way from the Northwest, which is the original location of the Six (6) White star, and also in the East, where the Six (6) White star resides in 2010.

Overall, in any given year, four directions are good and four directions are problematic, influencing each palace in one way or another. This relates to the partnerships illustrated above, along with the numerical partnerships of the particular 20-year Yun, which for the period 2004-2024 is the Eight (8) White star alignment. From a Feng Shui perspective, it is important to try to channel the energy of one’s good directions to achieve success and mitigate damages from the challenging directions to avoid misfortune.

Taking this concept a step further, our female friend above, born in 1973, would definitely want to sleep in a bedroom that lies in the East of her home, with the foot of the bed facing East, so that every morning she could wake up and receive the good fortune that resides there for not only 2010, but also for the entire twenty year period extending from 2004 to 2024. Additionally, this individual could place their desk in the West of their office at work to help reap financial gain from the fortune that lies in her star’s native position. On the other hand, a male born in 2004 (a Two (2) Black star) would need to use defensive Feng Shui in both the Northeast and the Southwest, as both their native and annual star’s location are problematic in 2010.

29 Integrate Aspects

To complete your understanding of how each year will truly affect you, it is essential to combine the fortune of your astrological sign of birth (e.g. Mouse, Ox, Tiger, etc.) with the location of your Nine Palace star and what is taking place in your native Trigram’s direction. This tedious task, which serves as the year’s plan and is often left to Feng Shui experts, should result in an overall assignment of living space to individuals within the home or office, the positioning of furniture, and the arrangement of household items for the year. It can also set into motion all plans, whether familial, personal, or professional in nature.

To combine harmonious palaces with good animal sign pairings creates multiple good fortunes for all involved, such as in a family or business. Understanding how these cycles all fit together, including their relationship with the Chinese zodiac and their positioning in time and space, is the basis for most of the readings in this text. The arrangement of this information can be extremely complicated: sometimes, multiple pockets of good fortune are created; other times, conflicting fortunes or extremely dangerous situations will appear.

When combining information to devise an annual plan, remember that learning Feng Shui takes time; it is a classical art that, when used correctly, can help you navigate through the trials and tribulations of life. At a minimum, it’s a lot of fun, so be sure to have some when considering what to do in 2010!

30 2010 Annual Forecast

Year of the Tiger

Gong Yi Fa Cai 恭喜發財! In 2010, the Chinese New Year falls on February 14th in China, which happens to be Valentine’s Day in the United States; yet, interestingly enough, the second new moon following the Winter Solstice on December 21, 2009 (which defines the start of the lunar year) actually reveals itself on February 13, 2010 at 9:52pm in New York City (4:52pm for our kama`āina in Hawai`i). Be sure to leave the front door of your home open this evening, especially if it is facing in a beneficial direction, so that you can gather good fortune throughout the night. It also means that a special evening extravaganza should be planned on the East Coast to celebrate the festivities, as Tigers in general love to orchestrate and be a part of large, oftentimes monumental, parties!

The Chinese call the year Geng Yin 庚寅, which is the 27th cycle in the sixty year calendar, symbolized by the element of Metal over the eastern Earth, represented by the terrestrial animal sign of the Tiger. In the ancient times of prehistoric China, there was no such thing as Yin or Yang – instead, earthly or Yin energy was symbolized by the Tiger, while heavenly or Yang energy was symbolized by the Dragon. During this long, primitive era, the people would tie knots in cords of rope to record the passage of events in time. It was only thousands of years later, when written language was invented, that the terms were coined.

What this tells you is that the Tiger comes from a time of long ago, when the land was open and free and beasts ruled the world. Humans had to hide in caves and develop intelligence in order to figure out how to survive in this rugged world. Fire was used in a very primitive, uncontrolled form, and communication was animated

31 in nature. Ancestors of dinosaurs flew above in the sky and strong, powerful beasts prowled the mountainous and wooded terrain below. In many ways, this is symbolic of a key aspect of the Tiger – primal strength. The Tiger species itself is said to have first come from southern China before spreading throughout the Asian continent. It is said that Tigers have a marking on their foreheads that looks strikingly similar to the Chinese character Wang 王, which can be translated as ‘the one who connects the heavens with humanity and the earth,’ otherwise known in the ancient world as the king or ruler of the people. This is a symbol carried by all Tigers, for better or for worse; as such, it is important in life for individuals born under this sign to learn how to deal with it or else peril will result.

In the early days of mankind, life was difficult. As such, all species needed to sustain their bloodlines and thus Tigers are excellent at rearing offspring and maintaining families. The Tian Shi 天師 would always say that Tigers not only take care of their children, they take care of all the children. A well-known Chinese proverb states “however vicious a Tigress be, she will never eat her own cubs.” Therefore, the concept of the Tiger and Yin is one of earthly strength, animalistic tendency, and also primal survival. It’s no wonder that the Tian Shi 天師 lineage calls the Tiger the “Sign of Natural Might.” Tigers have to be careful in their dealings with other Tigers, however – too much strength accumulates when they get together, and danger often results. Remember that Tigers are fiercely competitive with one another.

When Yin Metal falls over the Yin Earth of the Tiger, the aspect is called the Tiger Exiting the Mountain. Some call this year the Tiger Descending the Mountain, but this is incorrect – a Tiger never considers the idea of retreat or the possibility of descending to lower ground. This mix of energies depicts the old, wise sage who has experienced the trials and tribulations of ancient life on earth and finally comes back to his village, providing key secrets on how to move forward as a community. In 2010, descending Metal

32 energy from above meets rising Wood energy from below; this creates a balance of opposing forces, which brings about a fair and balanced quality of energy, resulting in just and cooperative behavior. A simplistic wisdom will emerge that can help people overcome obstacles, especially when acting wisely and with a kind hand. Remember that Tigers always move forward toward their goal; as such, even when peaceful and loyal, the Tiger is still straightforward in nature. One challenging aspect of Metal with Wood is that it can result in environmental damage, destruction, pollution, and dryness (with the possibility of drought). There is also the chance that a nuclear accident or incident will take place in 2010, so if you work in an industry related to atomic power, be very careful at the workplace.

One should note that the special Na Yin 納音 element of the year is Wood of the Pine Forest, which travels sonically through the cosmos. Pine is used extensively in herbal medicine as a ‘source of life,’ remaining evergreen through the four seasons, standing tall through the changes that occur within the constructs of time and space. The pine tree can increase one’s life expectancy if used on a regular basis, as it provides solid and consistent energy through the entirety of the year, similar to what is expected to occur in 2010. Remember that in the forest, no other plants can grow underneath the pine; similarly, in the body, no diseases can survive if one uses pine as an herbal remedy. The seed of the pine (called Bai Zi Ren 子仁柏) can be translated as the ‘son of heaven that contains the essence of life necessary to live over one hundred years.’ In fact, each human being is like a pine tree that must be properly nourished through the four seasons. As such, 2010 is a good year to take care of your physical self and those of others using the concept of the pine tree to consistently renew yourself throughout the year. You may also want to make seasonal Feng Shui

33 adjustments this year to mirror the effects of pine in the natural world.

According to the Tian Fu 天符 or Heavenly Register, the Tiger itself is symbolized in the calendar by Yin 寅, which depicts a man standing stiffly, wearing a hat, hands raised in greeting. This terrestrial alignment, although reckless like a thief or bandit, resembles a heavenly predator that teaches through difficult lessons, the master who makes delusion and attachment disappear. The Tiger is a physical being that needs real, tangible results at all times. They do not really care what those results are, so long as they can see them ‘in the flesh.’ They are rarely sick and therefore have a low tolerance for those who cannot overcome disease. Such individuals are powerful people who have key positions in society. They do not worry about money nor do they get caught up in other people’s feelings – they have their own to contend with. Since the Tiger stands in the East-Northeastern direction and corresponds to the 3-5am time period, be sure to keep your front door and windows open during this time (particularly those that face the Northeast or, more specifically, the East-Northeast) to gather good fortune on the Chinese New Year!

Tai Sui Wu Huan

Each year, a Tai Sui 太歲, acting like a policeman in the heavens, governs the annual cycle, ruling the year and influencing the whole of the zodiac, the eight cardinal directions, and their 24 directional subdivisions of 15° each on the compass. These sixty generals are said to represent the earliest ancestor of those born during the year and are symbolized by stars surrounding the planet .

In 2010, the ruler is Tai Sui Wu Huan 太歲鄔桓 (pictured on p. 4), who is positioned in the East-Northeast within the 52.5°‐67.5° range of the compass. The main energy of the year is coming into the

34 world from this direction, and it is pointed directly at the West- Southwest. General Wu Huan comes from an ancient tribe of nomadic people, who traveled across the mountainous and wooded terrain of China, working to keep in harmony the warring states that spanned the countryside. They would carry with them plant remedies from the forests to assist with healing, using the symbol of pine to ward off disease through the four seasons. 2010 will therefore bring about sweeping changes in medicine and there is the potential for major discoveries in the treatment of cancer, AIDS, and other currently ‘incurable’ diseases. At the same time, the prevalence of illness will increase, resulting in the need for more medical providers and cures. If you are looking to change careers this year, the health care and education industries are projected to be the best pursuits. It is worthy to note that females born in 2010 will have great good fortune and bring benefit to their entire family – congratulations if you give birth to a baby girl this year!

35 General Guidance

Because General Wu Huan sits in the East-Northeast, the opposite direction, West-Southwest, lies in the region called the “Broken Year” or Sui Po 嵗破, which brings misfortune and authority-related problems for those born in the year of the Monkey. As in every year, be sure to always sit with the Tai Sui behind you – and never directly facing him – or misfortune will inevitably result. It would be like speeding in your car on a highway knowing that a policeman was going to be giving tickets up ahead – a sure recipe for disaster. Good fortune will come in 2010 to the Horse and Dog; the Boar and, to a lesser extent, Mouse can also find some beneficial energy as well. You can use talismans of these figures to bring good fortune to yourself, home, or office during the current year. As mentioned above, Monkeys need to protect themselves as they are the sign being attacked in 2010 – additionally, the Rabbit, Snake, and Ox also have slight difficulties as well that will need to be managed appropriately.

In 2010, the biggest question on everyone’s mind is what will happen to the modern economies of the world. The current financial situation seems to sit in precarious balance – wouldn’t it be great if Feng Shui could provide us with the answer? In some ways, it can, but as mentioned at the start of this text, there are five types of fortune, and Feng Shui is only one of them. That being said, this year should bring stability to the world markets, and there will be cautious optimism for much of the year. The Tiger is a sign that is always associated with money. One can usually expect that financial assets will be secure in years that correspond to the Tiger. However, with the Eight (8) White in the center, and Wood and Metal combining together, there is not much profit to be gathered in 2010. One can invest in Wood-related industries, such as timber, textiles, education, and medicine. It is a good time to make advances in school as well, so perhaps you should focus on academic pursuits. Because the Tiger moves so quickly and

36 covers a lot of land, there is also good fortune for the airline and tourism industries as well.

When analyzing the 2010 Tiger, it is important to remember that the Wood element, in harmony, corresponds to sharp decision-making and keen planning; in disharmony, anger and timidity can and will occur. As a result, those who can make quick decisions when necessary based upon a sound investment plan will reap the best fortune overall this year. The spring looks like a beneficial time to get most of this done. If any of your investment opportunities go sour, do not fret, for if you become angry, you will act like an aggressive Tiger and get sloppy with future decisions. At the same time do not get timid, or you will miss your chance to profit later in the year. Understanding how to use Feng Shui for investments is very complicated – not only does it govern what you focus on, but it also dictates how you should make your many moves and decisions. Start slow and remember – sound and balanced decisions rule for the year!

37 Individual Forecasts by Sign

Tiger This sign is the focus for 2010 and, as such, it will set the next twelve years in motion for these individuals. Remember that when you are in the spotlight, you can either make it or break it. As such, understand that Tiger stripes are as individually unique as one’s finger print; therefore, just try to be you and shine in your own special way. Plan thoroughly and follow through on all your endeavors, remembering that the Tiger always moves forward and upward towards their goal. You will need to use a number of key protective Feng Shui charms this year as there is conflict among the signs, stars, and palaces, but there is always opportunity if you seize the right opportunities when they present themselves. Since Tai Sui Wu Huan will be watching you this year Tiger, be sure to obey all laws and do not get caught in any compromising situations! There is also the potential for you to reap some wealth this year Tiger – make sure you do not miss it and pounce on all available opportunities.

Rabbit This sign has one more year before their next twelve year cycle begins and they can feel the strength of the Wood energy approaching. Rabbits and Tigers generally do not get along, either in the zodiac or the wild; as such, there is the chance that the Tiger will attempt to rob the Rabbit of his or her wealth in 2010. Therefore, be sure to protect your assets and investments accordingly! It is not the time to be making risky financial decisions. The Rabbit has the Xian Qi 咸池 peach blossom star in its chart, which will probably bring about a short, but fiery, relationship with someone you already know. If you are married, be very careful of this star and avoid extramarital affairs at all costs. It is probably best for you to keep things simple this year, Rabbit, and prepare for your ‘big’ year coming up in 2011!

38 Dragon The Dragon is very different and opposite in nature from the Tiger and, to top it off, they are both very strong and powerful. This poses problems for the Dragon in 2010. This sign has three favorite pastimes: soaring through life, spewing fireballs, and relaxing amidst their treasures. Unfortunately, 2010 is not a good time for these endeavors – the Dragon will actually reap misfortune every time he or she tries to battle the strong, forceful nature of the Tiger. It is better for you to lay low and make plans for the future – especially with your big year coming up in 2012, which will bring with it colossal changes to the earth as we currently know it. Try to protect your wealth at all costs this year, and given the educational nature of the Tiger and the Wood element, it might be a good time for you to focus on developing new skills by taking a class or seminar. Pursuing a degree would be beneficial as well – particularly in careers that relate to environmental conservation. If you are an Earth Dragon, be especially careful in 2010.

Snake The Snake has misfortune in 2010, which is quite a change from the overall success of 2009 – this is due to their hot, fiery nature and association, at times, with the Monkey, which is a sign in peril this year. As such, the Snake, oftentimes called the ‘baby dragon,’ needs to keep cool this year and work to stay out of trouble. It is not a good time to be stubborn or confrontational; instead, go with the flow and try to help others in 2010 instead of trying to get people to do things for you. While this will be difficult for the Snake, think of it as a year to reflect internally and make changes that will help you in the long-term. Further, be very mindful of danger this year and always take the necessary precautions to protect both yourself and loved ones.

39 Horse The Horse will have a good year in 2010 as the Tiger is a dear friend; its fiery nature will shine bright with much support from the Wood element. Because of the positive nature of the year, the Horse could end up doing so much that they run their bodies down; as such, be sure to protect your health in 2010, especially from hot, contagious diseases. Do not beat yourself up this year either Horse – it’s a good time to take it easy and enjoy life!

Ram/Sheep This sign begins to move out of harm’s way in 2010 after being directly in the line of fire throughout 2009. It has been a rough year (not just for you but the world in general), so try to begin to rebuild your career and wealth, although difficulty lies ahead. This sign has the Tian Xi 天喜 peach blossom in 2010, so it is a good year to get engaged or married. If you are already married, be careful and beware of extramarital affairs. You will need to protect your health this year Ram, but there may be some lucrative investments you can find to increase your wealth – or perhaps you will receive money from a long-lost relative?

Monkey This sign has the broken year star in 2010, which results in misfortune, loss of wealth, lawsuits, and other problems. For the Monkey, they must protect their health and avoid sitting in the West-Southwest, facing East-Northeast, at all costs. It might help you to travel a bit or move your office, but do not do anything too risky; it will eventually backfire on you this year. It is better to simply lay low in 2010 and plan for future years to come. The Monkey can become very immature and emotional when things become difficult, and this can cause strain on his or her relationships – this sign must learn how to keep their feelings balanced this year, or they will end up getting hurt in the end. Do not make any travel plans this year either – it’s better to stay home. There is a particular chance in 2010 of you getting into an accident

40 involving automobiles or machinery – as such, be very careful handling both.

Rooster/Phoenix The Rooster will have an average year in 2010, which will be a letdown from the successes you reaped in 2009. There will be competition at work in 2010, and you will therefore need to stay internally strong to avoid getting hurt or losing your job. Try to stay out of trouble and focus on your endeavors. Hard work will pay off this year; you can also use this time to plan ahead for a very difficult year in 2011, when the Sui Po broken year star will fall under the auspices of the Rooster/Phoenix sign.

Dog The Dog is set to have a great year in 2010 – congratulations! The Dog always likes to do what is right and fight against what is wrong. If you combine the current economic climate with the democratic energy of the Tiger Exiting the Mountain, you end up with a good combination of energies that will result in success overall. Dogs should increase their community contributions and perhaps focus on a non-profit endeavor as a new career or business, although there will be challenges in whatever type of work you decide to engage in. There is also good fortune for you in academic pursuits. Carrying a Tiger charm will only assist you this year, Dog!

Boar The Boar, like every year, has a balanced fortune, and 2010 should be no different. As always, you will find that half of the year is good, while the other half ends up being average (at best). The Boar is used to this type of fortune – that’s why they are oftentimes misunderstood as lazy. Yet in reality, the Boar is smart enough to know how to play their hand - because of their fortune, it is always best for the Boar to just sit back and enjoy the year. Boars who work very hard end up getting frustrated and hurt – so why not adopt the principle that it is wealth to be content? That being said, there is the possibility of reaping some financial gain this year, so

41 keep your eyes peeled for opportunities. Relationships might be problematic for you this year, Boar, so try not to get crazy with your feelings or else everyone will end up getting hurt as well.

Mouse After two years of intense growth, the Mouse will experience 2010 as a period that is more average in nature. That being said, Tigers and Mice do have compatibilities together. Since the Tiger corresponds to the Wood element, which relates to paper, writing, and academia, the Mouse can reap good fortune in educational and scholarly endeavors this year. Perhaps this is the year you can begin to focus on writing as well. It should be noted that Mice falling under the Water element will have an excellent year in 2010, as this element nourishes both Wood and Metal, while those under the Wood, Fire, and Earth elements should be more careful so as not to engender fire.

Ox Oxen will have an average year in 2010 as they emerge from the spotlight of 2009; remember that whatever you set out to accomplish in 2009 will continue into this year, so be sure to follow up on seeds that you planted. Be sure to take care of your health and understand that there will obstacles in your career throughout 2010; as such, try to stay out of competition with others and instead focus on your own endeavors. On a positive note, it is a good year to study or make academic pursuits – maybe you should take a meditation class to increase your internal strength, or a massage seminar to better your well being? In 2010, the Ox has the Hong Luan 红鸾 wedding star, so there is good fortune with respect to relationships, engagements, and marriage. If already in a relationship, be sure to stay faithful and focus on building additional romance into your life. There will be the temptation of extramarital affairs this year, so be sure to learn from the mistakes of the most famous Tiger of all and be careful!

42 2010 Feng Shui Forecast

Overview

Each year, the numbers of the Lo Shu 洛書 Magic Square fly through the nine palaces (the eight cardinal directions plus the center) to establish four lucky and four misfortunate directions, each corresponding to a trigram. As mentioned earlier, this ancient mathematical system is one of the basic methods for calculating Feng Shui fortunes in any given year, month, day, or even hour. Based on the alignment of the numbers in the Magic Square, as compared to positioning of the Eight Trigrams and the Nine Palaces of the 8th Yun, fortunes are assigned to the eight main directions of 45° around the 360° of a compass during each particular year, with each section further divided into 24 subdivisions of 15° each. One can use this information to align your home or office to maximize the energetic potential of the year.

The 2010 Magic Square alignment is represented as follows:

SE SSW 7 red 3 jade 5 yellow 七赤 三碧 五黃 巽 離 坤 6 white 8 white 1 white E 六白 八白 一白 W 震 中 兌 2 black 4 green 9 purple 二黑 四綠 九紫 艮 坎 乾 NE N NW

43 When analyzing directions, there are a few basic guidelines to consider. First, the direction you face when walking out the front door of your primary residence represents the overall fortune of the home and its inhabitants in any given year. As such, if your home ‘faces’ East in 2010, all dwellers will have the opportunity to reap the good fortune and benefits it contains. Second, each person can work to maximize their usage of the good directions for any given year (such as the East in 2010), along with avoiding or mitigating issues in the problematic directions (such as the North and Southwest in 2010). Third, each individual’s birth star is located in a particular direction for the year – this indicates the primary direction each of us should focus on when deciding on how to Feng Shui your office and/or bedroom, along with how to position your bed and desk accordingly. If your star corresponds to a direction that brings good fortune, be sure to maximize your use of it; if your direction brings challenges, divert energy with Feng Shui or perhaps avoid it entirely – it simply depends on how flexible you and your family members can be with your living space. Fourth, check what is happening in the direction of your native Trigram – perhaps there is fortune for you to gather there as well. Whether an amateur or expert Feng Shui practitioner, work with what you can and build on your experience each year. In no time, you will be reaping the useful benefits of Feng Shui!

Directional Analysis

Two (2) Black – Northeast The Two (2) Black star resides in the Northeast in 2010 and, when combined with the Tai Sui, creates problems with health, wealth and, the ability to reap good fortune. This location, particularly East-Northeast (52.5°-67.5°), will be under the spotlight throughout 2010, so be sure to follow the rules and work to avoid any bad luck from surfacing. There is some small career benefit located here if you can find it. However, this section of your home can create negative health issues for its inhabitants, including physical and

44 emotional sickness and disease, so be sure to apply defensive Feng Shui here, avoid sleeping in this direction, and do not reside in a room that occupies this position of the home or has a door opening towards it. Also, it is not a good idea to undertake renovations or move land in this direction. Keep this direction undisturbed to prevent problems from unfolding. If you have a metal singing Tibetan bowl, be sure to place it in this direction to ward off negative influences. There is some good fortune due Northeast, but you still must be careful as it lies between the Tai Sui and the San Sha in the North. In addition, there is the Sui Sha 嵗煞 star present towards the North-northeast, which corresponds to danger.

Overall, it might be good to hang a Ba Gua mirror in this direction to reflect away negative influences. Those who correspond to the Two (2) Black star should adopt new health and wellness regimens and eat healthier food throughout the year. It’s a good time to focus on meditation, using the power of the Mountain trigram in the Northeast to assist with building your internal self. Avoiding this direction during the year would be best (especially during the first six months), but be sure to never face the Tai Sui during the year – instead, use the energy of the Tai Sui behind you if you are unable to avoid the Northeast section – particularly the 52.5-67.5° sector. Hanging an image of the Tai Sui in the East-Northeast will help remind you to be on your best behavior during the year and please - stay out of trouble!

Six (6) White – East The Heavenly Six (6) White star flies into the Eastern palace and brings with it great good fortune for 2010. There is positive energy here for education, business, and career endeavors, so it would bring you great luck to have a home or door facing this direction. Congratulations if you have the heavenly Six (6) White star in your birth chart – although everyone can reap good fortune from this direction in 2010. As such, this is a very good location for one to place a desk or bed, and if you have windows facing this direction,

45 be sure to keep them open to allow the good Qi to flow into the home. To improve the potency of this direction and bolster health, place six quartz crystals here, but beware of using the color red. Watery colors are better, and you can select any ranging from blue to grey to black. Remember that the good fortune in the East comes about because the Flying Star Feng Shui alignment for 2010 (on p. 43 with Eight (8) White in the center) is the same as that for the current twenty year cycle that extends from 2004 to 2024 (the 8th Yun). Because of this, there is great good fortune in the East, particularly if you can see water from your door or window. A bedroom in this direction of the home will contain the best fortune in 2010, especially if you are planning to have a baby this year. For individuals with difficulty conceiving, you can direct your bed in this direction to assist with fertility; in addition, seeing water in this direction will generate Sheng Cheng Shui 生成水, which can be translated as the ‘water that completes life.’

Four (4) Green – North The Four (4) Green star flies into the Northern position for 2010 and assists in matters related to love, romance, and artistic talent. Be careful of extramarital affairs and be proper in relationships of the heart, for also residing in this direction is the Three Killings or San Sha 三煞, which brings danger and misfortune for those who do not tread carefully. As such, do not disturb the ground in this direction and avoid doing any housing renovations. If your front door faces this direction, be sure to hang a Ba Gua mirror to deflect the energy of the Three Killings. Frequently using a front door that lies in this direction for 2010 will disturb the San Sha from its continued opening and closing.

If the front door of your home or office faces North, you might want to consider using an alternate entryway for the year – if you do not have this option, be sure to never slam the door shut, particularly with youngsters around. The ancient texts state that positioning four (4) Qi Lin 麒麟 in this

46 area in 2010 will help ward off negative San Sha energies. This ancient spiritual creature is described as half-unicorn, half-dragon with excellent eyesight; it was said that the Qi Lin walked so softly that its hooves made no sound, perhaps because it was so softhearted that it did not want to crush the blades of grass beneath its feet. This is how one should move in the North this year!

Classical Feng Shui experts agree that you never want to sit with your back to the San Sha, so do not position your desk in the North, facing South this year or you will be ‘stabbed in the back,’ whether it pertains to angry coworkers, a lack of ability to focus, difficulty concentrating, or the spreading of rumors and gossip. The North has now been affected for three straight years – the Tai Sui resided here in 2008, The Five (5) Yellow star in 2009, and now the Three Killings or San Sha in 2010, so be sure to stay focused and work to manage the trials and tribulations the year will bring. You can hang protection charms in the South, facing North, to assist with mitigating negative energies coming from this direction. A Bai Hu Fu 白虎符 or White Tiger charm would work especially well. If your native trigram is North, be patient – things will calm down soon.

Five (5) Yellow – Southwest The problematic Five (5) Yellow star resides in the Southwest in 2010, which unfortunately is also the home of the Sui Po 嵗破 or ‘Broken Year’ star, carrying misfortune as it stands in opposition to the Tai Sui, which sits in the Northeast. It is therefore vitally important to avoid being in this direction and facing Northeast in 2010, as you never want to be looking directly at the Tai Sui – especially with the Five (5) Yellow star present. Be sure to protect this direction at all costs in 2010 (especially 232.5-247.5°) and avoid making any renovations or changes in this section of your home. Avoid doing any construction here, do not break ground, and avoid digging or making any physical alterations on your property. In 2010, it is imperative to be careful here; an empty room or corner of the home with little or no traffic would be best for

47 this direction. Do not slam doors here or make excessive noise, as it will bring to life numerous problems and difficulties.

Three (3) Jade – South The Three (3) Jade star resides in the South in 2010 and brings about mixed energy for the year – it can be likened to adding firewood to an already burning flame. Since the South opposes the San Sha in the North, there is danger present. Combine that with the fact that the South contains the Trigram for Fire and you have a recipe for disaster. Be careful to read all documents well before signing, as there is the potential for legal disputes. One should use protective Feng Shui in this direction to help ward off any negativity that presents itself. Also, be sure to avoid arguments and losing your temper here as it will bring about serious consequences, particularly with respect to relationships, which will get ‘hot’ at times. There is the chance of fires, natural disasters, and volcanic eruptions in the South of nations as well this year, so be careful if you dwell in any hazardous zones and have plans ready for evacuation well in advance. It is also best to avoid making home improvements here during 2010 and be certain that smoke detectors are working in this section of the home or office. If you can take some of the Fire here and direct it internally, towards spiritual endeavors, you shold reap shining results!

One (1) White – West The One (1) White star flies to the West in 2010, and its watery quality nourishes the Metal element of the Lake trigram, bringing about beneficial energy. There is good fortune to be found here, especially towards the Southwest and Northwest and also when in this position, facing East. Some fiery energy does result when the One (1) White star of the Eastern District falls into the position of the 7 Red star (Western District), so one must take care of their health here and be sure to use defensive Feng Shui appropriately. In particular, be sure to keep your lungs, ears, eyes, nose, and throat healthy. Avoid conflict with others, especially considering

48 that the West contains the trigram for Lake, which brings about immaturity, gossip, and rumors.

There is the potential here for financial gain, particularly with respect to new opportunities, and there is benefit in love and romance – so long as you avoid being overly critical. If you decide to put your bed in this area, or if the foot of the bed sits in this position of your room, you must protect yourself with respect to business endeavors and hang a Ba Gua mirror in this direction. Placing a moving water display in this direction, or even a glass of water that gets changed daily, would bring benefit to the home with respect to business and finance. If your organization’s front door faces this direction, you will probably be profitable in 2010. Just be certain to avoid rumors and gossip – it is therefore best to listen than to be overly dramatic or critical of others.

Eight (8) White – Center The Eight (8) White star lies in the magical center position in 2010 and brings a lot of good fortune with it, due to its correlation with the 8th Yun, which is the period that extends from 2004-2024. Wealth, fame, joy, celebration, and happiness can be found in the center for 2010 – especially if your birth chart contains the Eight (8) White star. Avoid using heavy metallic objects in this area and instead use earthly tones. Romance can prosper here as well this year, especially if you place eight (8) quartz crystals in the center of your home or office. A bustling center location will generate sweeping success for the year – be sure that there is room for individuals to walk through the centers of your living spaces, so all can benefit. Congratulations Eight (8) White star individuals!

Seven (7) Red – Southeast The Seven (7) Red star flies into the Southeast in 2010, bringing some fortune with it. However, there is the possibility of robbery and deceit as well, since the Metal element of the Seven (7) Red can ‘chop’ at the Wood energy present here. As such, be careful to protect your wealth and keep your home safe and secure. Be sure

49 to use protective Feng Shui in this direction in 2010, especially if the front door of your home or office faces the Southeast. While this direction contains some positive energy, and benefit can be reaped from it (especially due Southeast), there is too much metallic force at work here to keep things going smoothly.

The battle between the year’s Wood and Metal energies will take place in this direction and, because of this, heat and fire can (and will) result. There is so much Wind and Wood here to begin with, due to the underlying Trigram of the Southeast, so it only takes a spark to set things ablaze. Therefore, avoid using the color red in this direction, and do not burn candles or incense. Additionally, do not use anything metallic here, such as wind chimes or wall hangings. One can balance the fiery aspects of this direction out with more watery colors, or one can use images of water to assist with mitigating problematic energies as well.

Nine (9) Purple – Northwest The Nine (9) Purple star flies into the Northwest and brings with it a mix of good and bad fortune - there is benefit towards the West, but danger towards the North where the San Sha resides. There is good fortune for scholarly endeavors but not for money, love, or relationships. This is because the Fire aspect of the Nine (9) Purple ‘melts’ the Metal element contained in the Northwest. However, There is also energy for fertility in this direction, so be sure to face your bed towards here if are trying to get pregnant to maximize the intelligence of your offspring. Children who face this direction in the classroom will benefit, as will students who position their desk towards this direction – especially towards the Western side. It’s better to focus on one’s internal self in this direction in 2010 and get all your work done when facing the Northwest. Use your native color of purple here to bring about good fortune – perhaps a flower arrangement? The Northwest direction contains the Trigram for Heaven; combined with the Yang energy of the Nine (9) Purple star, there is good chance for expansion this year, if you follow the right path.

50 New Year’s Day Traditions

Remember to consider the following age-old advice when welcoming in any Chinese New Year:

• The Chinese believe that all household clutter should be removed and the home thoroughly cleaned before the start of the New Year. By ‘sweeping away’ any remaining bad luck from the preceding year, it opens up space to bring in good luck for the New Year. However, do not clean on the New Year, or you will risk sweeping away your good fortune! • It is good luck to have a lion dance performed on the premises during New Year’s festivities to help ward off evil spirits and welcome the good fortune of the New Year. • Noodles are traditionally served on New Year’s Day, but be sure to keep their length intact, or else it is said you will ‘cut’ your fortune for the year. • When traditionally giving money to friends and relatives for the Chinese New Year, be sure to enclose it in a red envelope for protection and give in even numbers of tens or hundreds – odd numbers should only be used for funerals. The number four (4) should be avoided, as it is associated with death, while the number eight (8) is considered lucky. • A number of plants are often used to gather good fortune on the New Year, such as Bamboo, Kumquat, and Narcissus, whose presence is said to generate wealth and prosperity. • Many Chinese will keep their lights on the night before New Years and even prop doors and windows open so as to allow the good luck of the year to enter into their homes and offices. • Most Chinese people will not cut or wash their hair around the New Year to avoid ‘cutting’ or ‘washing’ their fortune away. • Gong Yi Fa Cai 恭喜發財 does not mean “Happy New Year” – instead, it translates as “Congratulations and Be Prosperous!”

52 Compatibility Charts

Each animal sign has a relationship with the other eleven signs as depicted below:

San He 三合 or Three Harmonies

ELEMENT ZODIAC PARTNERS

WATER Mouse ' Dragon ' Monkey

WOOD Rabbit ' Ram ' Boar

FIRE Horse ' Dog ' Tiger

METAL Rooster ' Ox ' Snake

These alignments are extremely favorable and lead to harmonious relationships and partnerships. Each trinity is comprised of three signs, four apart, with the zodiac located in the cardinal direction corresponding to the associated element. One can say these signs, when together, are like ‘two or three peas in a pod.’

Liu He 六合 or Six Harmonies

WEST/NORTH SIGNS EAST/SOUTH SIGNS

Mouse ' Ox

Boar ' Tiger

Dog ' Rabbit

Rooster ' Dragon

Monkey ' Snake

Ram ' Horse

These alignments balance each other out and provide for a complementary partnership that maximizes strengths and minimizes weaknesses of the paired zodiac signs. One can say that for these relationships, ‘opposites attract.’

53 Liu Sha 六煞 or Six Misfortunes

YANG 陽 CYCLE YIN 陰 CYCLE

Mouse ' Horse

Ox ' Ram

Tiger ' Monkey

Rabbit ' Rooster

Dragon ' Dog

Snake ' Boar

These adversarial alignments should be avoided as they represent signs that fall in opposition (e.g., six apart) from each other around the Chinese zodiac wheel, oftentimes resulting in conflict and arguments.

Nine Palace Compatibilities

Each of the Palaces described above belongs to one of two districts, as illustrated below, which sets compatibilities in motion:

Eastern District Palaces Western District Palaces Shao Yang 小陽 Tai Yang 太陽 Shao Yin 少陰 Tai Yin 太陰 1 White 一白 2 Black 二黑 3 Jade 三碧 6 White 六白 4 Green 四綠 7 Red 七赤 9 Purple 九紫 8 White 八白

The Eastern District consists of all the Water, Wood, and Fire palaces, while the Western District consists of the Earth and Metal palaces. It is more compatible to be associated with individuals who or directions that reside in your own district, as there is more harmony, happiness, and contentment. On the other hand, being

54 around those from the opposing district can be harmful and hurtful, often bringing about trouble and arguments.

The best palace pairings (**** in the table below) bring about fresh energy or prolong the longevity of each person. These are the best relationships because they perfectly balance out within the Western and Eastern Districts. The next best pairings (***) bring about heavenly healing or hidden rewards as they also represent relationships within the Western and Eastern Districts. As one would expect, the other pairings are not as fortunate, as they match palaces from the Eastern District with those from the Western District. For example, the next pairing (**) can bring about sickness, arguments, and misfortune, while the least fortunate pairing (*) should be avoided at all costs.
