ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS APRIL 2009 PAGE 3 GETTING STRONGER OCW Wishes By Jim Von Tungeln You (Editor’s Note: This article is being reprinted this A Happy Birthday! month, because the editor left off half of the article last month. Apologies!)

Silent bicycles strewn about waiting to be unfurled April before the day ripens. Colorful jerseys dance around trying to get a route slip and complete unfinished Birthdays business before the morning round up. It settles down as a few claps are heard and division after division is sent out with their own unique colors. Cyclists eager Hamburg, Patti 4/1 to prove that you can go in circles and still get somewhere, and that this effort is in fact rewarded … Lanphere, Michael 4/1 at least here. Without permission, my existential Carchidi, Jeff 4/2 musings start and I wondered if that is really true. Hoover, Chuck 4/2 “Where are they getting to?” My brain overhears Wallace, Jeff 4/4 someone saying he needed to get stronger for the season. I looked over to see if he meant bicycling, or Von Tungeln, Jim 4/4 the way my brain is thinking these days, life in general Santos, Christian 4/8 and difficulties in particular. Looking down, Chemotti, Richard 4/9 subconsciously slighted, at his friend’s giant calves Vorderstrasse, Darrel 4/9 gives it away and I am somewhat amused, as I am so often these days. “What season is he in?” Huff, Bob 4/11 Gunderson, Mark 4/11 My musings continue on about how we can get strong Ramos, Jayne 4/13 for the difficult season(s) that lay ahead us — the potholes if you will. For I am no stranger to them either. Rivera, Gil 4/14 I have peddled in circles up giant guarded hills and for Johnson, Herb 4/16 very long wind swept distances, and terrified myself Clark, Sara 4/16 on the very edge of life — while thinking I was in control Enderle, Alicia 4/20 of my fate and fears — blasting down horrifying mountains that have resulted in my crashing and Walker, Jim 4/21 burning more than . And I watched my weight, Kahler, Jill 4/22 what I ate and how much rest I got. My testosterone Guttentag, Fred 4/24 increased, and I got stronger and stronger. I could ride all day and all night and have no one to tell me Daley, Laura 4/25 what to do. It felt very good to be able to do that. And Heidner, Emmie 4/25 yet, “What has that prepared me for?” I heard bubble Bradley, Patrick 4/26 up from that place I am seldom friends with. Sorem, Terry 4/28 After twenty years of bicycling and a dusty box of Kelly, Debby 4/29 plaques, I asked myself on this sun splitting day that Mills, Robert 4/29 made me squint and hope the riders around me could Griffin, Reid 4/30 keep their lines, “Am I stronger?” Certainly not in the Despie, Dennis 4/30 sense of being able to ride faster, or longer than I did at one time. What has all that riding, 100,000 miles in ten years, prepared me for, I heard bounce around in

PAGE 4 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS APRIL 2009 my brain from that unknown source. The question go. Someone spoiled it all and asked me how strong hung there and unnerved me because I had no answer I felt today. I smiled as I wondered if he really wanted to give that which was deep inside me. And it made to know — or if I should let him figure that, and so me a little melancholy, as if I was missing something many other things, out for himself. After all his season important. was still in front of him, and I needed to think about my thinking. And it was good, very very good. An old friend rode up next to me and then quietly buzzed off ahead like a happy bee with a purpose. I noticed Jim von Tungeln 2/08 that he seemed excited just to be alive, happy to have a chance at another day and even content to be in the Jim completed the HQ four years in a row, back of the pack. I do not know how I saw it so quickly, was the first person in the Triple Crown Hall of Fame, as my existential musings peculated to a quick boil, and also was in the first group to receive the “Super but I did see … real strength. It certainly wasn’t in the Randonneur” award. Finally, he is a lifetime member legs that were not as powerful as I had once seen. of the “Geezers.” And it wasn’t in the back that was a little bit bent over. But I subconsciously wanted to reach out as he passed and grab a little for myself, and fill a silent need inside of me. I rode in circles some more letting the years sink in.

It came to me slowly from some place I do not spend enough time in, that where I was once strong I was now weak, but that where I was once weak I was at least — and at last — getting stronger. I was not sure how or why. It had to do with being able to complete any ride, or difficulty life gave me without an audience being forced to dote on me. Now I could do my internal and external rides by myself, and except for one special NEW OCW MEMBERS person (and then not always even then), to keep things to myself. It made more sense that way. The important All OCW Members, things were tucked away in my heart, a lot of very please note... special bicycling places and events safeguarded there to be gently mulled over whenever there is a desire, or Our strength is our Membership and our future need. ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS APRIL 2009 PAGE 5 BANQUET 2009 REVIEW By Mike Lee

I want to thank all the members who attended the OCW 2009 Annual banquet. From the reports I heard and what people mentioned to me a good time was had by all. I’m not sure if this was the first but I thought it would be a nice departure from traditional cycling related speakers to go with something totally out of the norm. Bringing in Randy Kappe with his magical/ comedy act garnered many puzzled looks, and I didn’t know quite how to answer everyone’s apprehension but I think the proof was in the pudding! Randy targeted the usual suspects, the President, the Vice President, and anyone else close to the stage with helping him with his comedy/magic act. We all had a good laugh. So how did the levitated table work? It’s beyond me; he didn’t reveal anything to me. With Terri and I, I still have my hand attached so how did that work? Magicians don’t reveal their illusions.

The dinner was superb and I didn’t hear any complaints about not having enough desserts. I want to throw out this challenge to all the membership, this is your banquet, awards, and installation, if you have a suggestion let me know about it and I’ll see if I can work it in. This is a great night for us to reward all those hard working individuals that make this club operate and those that have set personal fitness goals. I feel honored to be able to be part of this group but I sort of knew that when I became part of it only a short time ago.

So I have the reigns for one more year with the banquet and I’m already working on ideas that I may do. So stay tuned when I start planning for next year’s extravaganza.

ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS APRIL 2009 PAGE 11 BULLDOG BIKE RACE By Alan Dauger

Every year Camp Pendleton creates a fun and festive atmosphere when it puts on the Bulldog Bike Race. I have participated for the past few years in this “beginners” road race and have had a great time. It is 28 miles out and back with about 1700 feet of climbing. The start point is about four miles up Las Pulgas Road, then down to Stuart Mesa Road toward Oceanside, then cuts sharply up two steep hills to 32 Area where it loops back the way it came. There are five waves and many age groups of riders ranging from expert to novice, so things can get dicey at the start of each wave. After a while, the riders spread out a bit and when the hills come, they are really separated. Then it’s time to get into a good paceline and shoot back to the finish. OCW was well represented on this beautiful day in February, with Link Lindquist first in his age group, Kris Jones second in hers, Marni Witte fifth in hers, Alan Dauger fifth in his, and Dave Jones in the middle of his group. Please see the photo by Dave Jones.

Tandem Time Please join us for the next Tandem Time ride on Saturday, April 4, 2009, starting at 8:30 a.m. from The Square located at Main and MacArthur in Ride Director Irvine near the John Wayne Airport. Please share this information with other interested tandem riders and email Debi Butz at [email protected] or call her at 714/996-4366 if you have further questions. Upcoming Tandem Time ride is Saturday, June 6, 2009,

Wilson Crider had the only victory of the year, with a win in the CBR State Team Time Trial championship. Wilson also raced more than any other member and posted a number of solid results, including 5th at the Dana Point Grand Prix and 9th at the SCNCA Team Time Trial championship. Wilson also earned his upgrade from Category 5 to Category 4 during the 2008 season.

Paramount President John McKee and long-time Paramount members Howard Miller and Joe Mastro were the stalwarts of the Paramount Masters squad. John McKee had seven podium finishes, including 2nd place Pendleton Bulldog road race, an 8th place at the La Mirada finishes at the Mothballs criterium, the Torrance criterium, grand prix and a 15th at the UCI Anthill criterium. We visited the team buses and the Lifestyle Festival which had very few things to give away this year. We eventually split up with Patrick and I hanging out at the Rabobank staging area. Robert Gesink (Best Young Rider 2008, 2009) was there preparing to pre ride the course. Unfortunately, the team bus had not yet arrived and he had to change in the equipment truck.

Later, we worked our way over to the Astana staging area which was mobbed by fans as the bus drove up. Next, we visited the Saxo Bank staging area where we met the Specialized representative who had Fabian Cancellara’s time trial bike. He was explaining some of the features of his bike and the recent talk about enforcing the 3:1 ratio equipment rule on the time trial bikes. He also mentioned for a prologue Fabian generates 1600-1800 watts to get himself up to speed then averages 800 watts.

Just before the race started, we regrouped and settled into our spot for the race. We chose a spot about 100 feet from the first turn which was a slight hill that seemed to go on forever. The crowds were huge this year. Wilson with Robert Gesink

PAGE 20 ORANGE COUNTY WHEELMEN NEWS APRIL 2009 KOM at Mt. Palomar By Paul D’Aquanni Mark Cavendish When learning that the final stage of the Tour of California was going to climb Palomar Mt, and Cole Grade, I knew that I would have to make a decision as to where I would choose to watch. My son did not hesitate, as soon as he heard that Stage 8 would climb Palomar, he rented a cabin at Palomar Village for the weekend. That made my decision of where to watch Stage 8 an easy one!

We got to Palomar on Friday night with the intensions of riding on Saturday down the East Grade, Route 76 west, then up South Grade. Normally I would not choose to ride S. Grade on the weekend; as there is more motorcycle traffic than I care to deal with. But it seems as though the motorcyclists chose not to ride Palomar this Saturday, due to all the non-motorized cycles populating the route. There were already some folks staking out vantage points for watching the Tour the next day. Some in motor-homes, some in tents, some just in the back of their vehicle. It was quite a day as we rode S. Grade twice. We enjoyed the Patrick camaraderie of fellow cyclists as we all tried to get a taste of what the Pros would endure the following day. The climb from the turn onto 76 to the top of Palomar, is 12 miles and about 4300 feet of elevation gain! The top of Palomar is at 5123 ft above sea level, and is the highest point of the Tour. Sunday, we decided to ride So. Grade again. We went out at 10:00 and observed that the crowd had gathered along the entire 6 mile stretch of So. Grade, and beyond. It was quite a festive atmosphere, almost circus like. I have not seen the in person, but I can imagine that this was as close as it gets to duplicating a famous KOM as Alpe D’ Huez, or Mt Ventoux. I am sure choosing to view the ascent by the Pros anywhere along this route would have been very exciting. After riding up this last time, we decided to view the race right at the top. We put our bikes away and got a strategic spot to see the Pros come to the KOM line.

We could see the riders coming up from about 3 km down. The adrenalin in the crowd was building. As the riders got closer, the crowd got louder, as they all had their heads looking down toward the fast approaching riders. The challenge of Palomar did not disappoint, as the field of riders were quite strung out at the KOM. The eventual winner, Levi George Leipheimer, was in the first group over the top, and he later Hincapie stated “I had to remind myself it was February in California, as it was like the Alps in July.” Don’t know if it gets better than that, can’t wait for next year!
