Recap: Junior RHP Hector Ambriz earned his first complete-game win of the season to lead No. 22 UCLA to a 4-2 victory over California on Friday afternoon at Evans Field. The win improves the Bruins to 24-17 overall and 8-5 in the Pac-10 while Cal drops to 19-22 overall and 6-10 in the Pac-10. Ambriz went the distance for the Bruins, giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Recap: California center fielder Brennan Boesch’s game-winning RBI single in the 11th inning spoiled UCLA’s comeback in the ninth inning, giving the Golden Bears a 3-2 upset win over the No.22-ranked Bruins on Saturday afternoon at Evans Field. The loss drops UCLA to 24-18 overall and 8-6 in the Pac-10 while Cal improves to 20-22 overall and 7-10 in the Pac-10. The Bruins could not capitalize on a brilliant performance by junior starter Dave Huff who tossed 10.0 innings with three strikeouts, allowing two runs on seven hits with only one walk. Huff held the Golden Bears scoreless for the final nine innings in his outing, retiring 27 of the final 31 hitters that came to the plate. Freshman Brandon Crawford went 2-for-6 at the plate with a double, freshman Ryan Babineau when 2-for-4 with a double, and senior Josh Roenicke had a RBI single. Recap: California rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the fifth inning for a 9-4 win over No. 22 UCLA on Sunday afternoon at Evans Field. The loss drops UCLA to 24-19 overall and 8-7 in the Pac-10 while Cal improves to 21-22 and 8-10 in the Pac-10. UCLA scored a run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Tim Murphy reached on an infield single, and senior Sean Smith followed with a single to center field to advance Murphy to third base. Senior Josh Roenicke then grounded to second base but Cal second baseman Kyle Spraker booted the ball to allow Murphy to score from third and Roenicke to reach first base. The Golden Bears put up a three spot in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Cal tied the game on a two-run single to center field by Allen Craig, and took a one-run lead on a sacrifice fly to left field by Brennan Boesch. UCLA scrapped for a run to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning. Cal would score three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 7-4 lead. Cal catcher Travis Howell broke the 4-4 tie with a double to center field to put the Golden Bears up by one. Roenicke came in from center field to relieve UCLA starter Tyson Brummett, and walked Spraker and hit Rob Nesbitt with a pitch to load the bases with one out. Craig then hit a two-run double down the left field line to put Cal up by three.

The game, which was suspended 35 days ago due to rain, was picked up in the top of the fourth inning with UCLA leading the Highlanders 6-3. Junior Hector Ambriz went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI, and senior Sean Smith went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Freshman Jason Novak (2-1) tossed 3.1 innings in relief with two strikeouts to earn the win. Back on March 28, UCLA jumped out to an early 4-0 lead over UC Riverside in the first inning. UCLA put two more runs on the board to go up 6-1. On May 2, the Bruins loaded the bases in the top of the fourth inning, an inning they have waited over a month to play. With two outs, Smith nailed a three-run double to right center to clear the bases and put UCLA up 9-3.
