Since the 1980s there have been many studies attempting to demonstrate the impact of both political and cultural elites and the interaction with the ‘other’ in the construction of that same national identity. This paper is not the first work addressing identity formation in the former Yugoslavia and the forces which played a role in it. What distinguishes this work is the fact that it owes its existence to several spheres of interest: international politics, history and literature. Therefore it is a true product of interdisciplinary research. The Illyrian movement began in Croatia in the 1830s. Its center was Zagreb. The movement was inspired by preaching of Slovak poet Kollár about Slav unity and his ideas about Slav solidarity. Those thoughts, combined with the pressures of Habsburg political leadership wanting to put an end to an already very limited Croatian independence, resulted in the formation of the Illyrian movement. The name “Illyrian” was chosen to accentuate the bond between the 19th century South Slav inhabitants of the Western Balkans and the ancient Illyrian tribe which inhabited the Western Balkan region during the Classical Era. Thus the proponents and leaders of the Illyrian movement wanted to express both continuity of tradition and the bond between different South Slavs through their common Illyrian background. Sources written during the 20th century claim that during the timeframe of the Illyrian movement – from 1835 through the 1850s – the Croatian national consciousness was awakened and formed. The 19th century was a period of national identity formation in many European states which makes the Croatian Illyrian movement unexceptional in this context in European history. However, what makes the Illyrian movement unique is its dual nature. The national identity which was formed was not purely Croatian but rather a mixture of South Slav (Illyrian) and Croatian identity. This fact on its own is remarkable and becomes even more curious when one starts to observe Yugoslav and Croatian identity formation. What can be noticed is that the same Illyrian writers have been (and continue to be) used to make Croats believe in the two very different identities: their Yugoslavian identity and their exclusively Croatian identity. The central argument of this work is the following: The twentieth century has seen two separate Croatian identity orientations: the South Slav (Yugoslav) and the Croatian. It is not 1 accurate that the literary works circulating at the time of the Illyrian movement were the principal influence on the formation of today’s Croatian identity. The work of the Illyrian writers and the exponents of the movement – which is today being presented as the cornerstone in the formation of Croatian self-consciousness – cannot be defined as the source of an exclusively Croatian identity. Illyrian authors have rather constructed the South Slav-Croatian identity and orientation. The analyses conducted in this thesis shows that the purely Croatian identity was not constructed by Illyrian writers but rather by a cultural elite who later defined and analyzed the canon of the Illyrian authors. The goal of this thesis is to show how it is possible to promote two opposite issues, two opposite identities, while using the same discourse. This thesis will show how in the case of Croatian identity formation the context became more important than the original text. In addition, it will be shown how literary works can be misrepresented in order to support ideas which they may or may not have initially promoted. In order to support this idea, the thesis is divided into three chapters. They can also be read separately because they deal with three different phenomena but when combined they support the central statement of this work. The first chapter is devoted to the introduction of the Illyrian movement and to the context in which it fits into the broader frame of Croatian history. So there is always treachery, since there is the instinct to die as well as the in- stinct to live; and as loyalty changes to meet the changing threats of the environment, so treachery changes also.1 This chapter analyses these shifting concepts of loyalty and treason (the polit- icizing of treachery) through a case study from Croatia in the early twentieth century. Late Habsburg Croatia, with its narrow political franchise—less than 2 % of the population—which existed alongside a burgeoning civil society, might rightly be imagined as a territory containing multiple and conflicting loyalties. There was Croatia’s complex ethnic and religious mixture (Croat and Serb, following Catholic, Orthodox and even Jewish faiths) and its sensi- tive geographical location on the Habsburg frontiers, where a military border against the Ottoman Empire had only been abolished in 1881. And not least, there existed historic ties which bound Croatia to both halves of the Habs- burg monarchy despite the dualist system that had existed since 1867. In 1868, Croatia, having been joined to Hungary for over seven hundred years, was uniquely given a degree of home rule, with its own government and par- liament (the Sabor) in Zagreb.

Bosnia was first mentioned in second half of the tenth century in the work of the Byzantine emperor and writer Constantin Porfirogenet „De administrando imperio“. The Charter of Kulin Ban as of 29 August 1189 is undisputed evidence that Bosnia was an independent State. During the domination of Tvrtko I Kotromanic in 1377, Bosnia was transformed into the kingdom and became the most powerful country in the Balkans. During 1463 Bosnia was ruled by the Ottoman Empire but retained certain features of political identification, first as the Bosnian province since 1580, and afterwards as the Bosnian Vilayet since 1965. After Austro-Hungarian having arrived, Bosnia became Corpus separatum. In the Kingdom of SHS, borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina complied with the internal regionalization of the country until 1929. During the Second World War, at the First Assembly of ZAVNOBiH in Mrkonjic Grad on 25th November 1943, Bosnian sovereignty within the Yugoslav Federation was renewed. After the Yugoslav crisis, which culminated in 1991 and 1992, Yugoslavia is in dissolution and peoples and citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the referendum on 29 February and 1 March 1992 voted for independence. The protagonists of greater Serbs policy could not accept such solution for Bosnia and Herzegovina and that was followed by aggression, which, after three and a half years ended by painful compromises contained in the Dayton Peace Agreement.

    144 P P Literacy and Census: e Case of Banat Bulgarians, 1890–1910 Literacy is a dynamic category that changes over time. e understanding of writing has gradually been expanding while its public signi cance has been increasing. e transition to widespread literacy was performed from the 17 th to the 19 th centuries and was connected with the rise of the bourgeoisie, with the development of services and technology that generated economic demand for literate workers. is transition was a slow and gradual process and deve- loped at di erent rates in di erent geographical regions, but from a global point of view it was marked by unprecedented social transformation: while in the mid-19 th century only 10% of the adult population of the world could read and write, in the 21 st century – despite the ve-fold increase in population – 80% have basic literacy. 1 In recent decades this transformation has caused a considerable research interest in the history of literacy and the process of over- coming illiteracy.     Oral Tradition, 6/2 3 (1991): 200-224 Bugaršćice: A Unique Type of Archaic Oral Poetry Josip Kekez Historical and Geographical Defi nition In the context of oral literature, bugaršćice1 represent an important and unique genre in many respects. They are, among other things, striking proof that oral literature is not simply a discovery of the nineteenth century—as was long maintained in South Slavic regions—and that two literatures, oral and written, were in contact from the earliest times in a number of ways, including the manner of their recording and study. On the other hand, we would know nothing of the genre in question and its aesthetic values if interest in oral literature had not existed from the beginning; many passages in the early literature of Croatia would have forever remained obscure, while Croatian poetry of the present day would have assumed a different profi le. Scholars have not so far taken suffi cient account of the fact that the poetic system of the bugaršćica is distinctly indigenous and in many of its features remote from other verse forms of oral literature; nor is there evidence that it existed at any time or in any national community or setting other than those discussed below. Apart from one or two examples, all bugaršćice have been recorded on the eastern Adriatic strip from Istria in the north to the Gulf of Kotor in the south, so that they are geographically strictly defi ned. One poem was recorded on the western side of the Adriatic, in southern Italy, but it was sung in their own language by settlers from the eastern side of the Adriatic.

The Yugoslav language policy advocated a polycentric model of linguistic unity that strived for equal representation of the languages of the peoples (Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Slovenian), ethnicities (ethnic minorities) and ethnic groups, as well as both scripts (Latin and Cyrillic). Serbo-Croatian, spoken by 73% of people in Yugoslavia, was divided into the eastern and the western variety and two standard language expressions: Bosnian and Montenegrin. One linguistic system had sociolinguistic subsystems or varieties which functioned and developed in different socio-political, historical, religious and other circumstances. With the disintegration of Yugoslavia, the aforementioned sociolinguistic subsystems became standard languages (one linguistic system brought forth four political languages). We will describe the linguistic circumstances of the newly formed countries after 1991 in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro.

Even though the Albanian community has more than twenty years of presence in the country, its stories, often invested with otherness, remain hidden in the Greek ‘mono-cultural’ landscape. In opposition to these stigmatising discourses, my study draws on movements democratising the past and calling for engagements from below by endorsing the socially constructed nature of identity and the denationalisation of memory. A nine-month fieldwork with five Albanian families took place in their domestic and neighbourhood settings in the areas of Athens and Piraeus. Based on critical ethnography, data collection was derived from participant observation, conversational interviews and participatory techniques. From an individual and family group point of view the notion of habitus led to diverse conceptions of ethnic identity, taking transnational dimensions in families’ literal and metaphorical back- and-forth movements between Greece and Albania.
