  • Genre Bending Narrative, VALHALLA Tells the Tale of One Man’S Search for Satisfaction, Understanding, and Love in Some of the Deepest Snows on Earth
62 Years The last time Ken Brower traveled down the Yampa River in Northwest Colorado was with his father, David Brower, in 1952. This was the year his father became the first executive director of the Sierra Club and joined the fight against a pair of proposed dams on the Green River in Northwest Colorado. The dams would have flooded the canyons of the Green and its tributary, Yampa, inundating the heart of Dinosaur National Monument. With a conservation campaign that included a book, magazine articles, a film, a traveling slideshow, grassroots organizing, river trips and lobbying, David Brower and the Sierra Club ultimately won the fight ushering in a period many consider the dawn of modern environmentalism. 62 years later, Ken revisited the Yampa & Green Rivers to reflect on his father's work, their 1952 river trip, and how we will confront the looming water crisis in the American West. 9 Minutes. Filmmaker: Logan Bockrath 2010 Brower Youth Awards Six beautiful films highlight the activism of The Earth Island Institute’s 2011 Brower Youth Award winners, today’s most visionary and strategic young environmentalists. Meet Girl Scouts Rhiannon Tomtishen and Madison Vorva, 15 and 16, who are winning their fight to green Girl Scout cookies; Victor Davila, 17, who is teaching environmental education through skateboarding; Alex Epstein and Tania Pulido, 20 and 21, who bring urban communities together through gardening; Junior Walk, 21 who is challenging the coal industry in his own community, and Kyle Thiermann, 21, whose surf videos have created millions of dollars in environmentally responsible investments.

  • The Newsletter of the Hoosier Canoe Club Paddlers and Leaders, They Find More Ways to Make Quality Events for Us
Volume 48, Issue 1 http://www.hoosiercanoeclub.org/ February 2010 Hello, HCC — Fall Meeting, Sunday November 15 Dan Valleskey One year past as Skipper, one more to go! We have a few new Chairmen, there is a complete list on the next page in this newsletter. I almost felt like I knew what I was doing as I went around the table soliciting Chairs. (Truth is, I just have a good board to work with.) Two significant programs are under way for 2010. First off, we will have even more help on the Fall Creek clean-up this year. Millersville at Fall Creek Valley is a new community organization forming. They are eager to address environmental concerns. I hope to attend one of their meetings in the next week or two. They are looking forward to helping us in June (the exact date will be set at the trips meeting on the 24th). Second, the HCC will be holding the charter for a new scout Venture Crew. The crew will operate independently of the canoe club for the most part, although a number of members are ready, willing, and able to jump in with instruction and leader- Dan Valleskey on Pigeon—October 2009 ship. If you want to learn more about this or maybe help out, please contact me. Our trips planning meeting will be taking place about the time you get this (January 24). I have had a sneak preview of a number of new trips and I think we will knock your socks off this year! Theresa Kulczak and Sue Foxx are really pulling out the stops for a good flatwater schedule.

  • Blazing Paddles
Blazing Paddles Inside this Message From Our President issue: As each new kayaking season begins, I always receive a couple of e-mails complain- ing about the long waiting lists for club paddles. And, without a doubt, that is a problem Message from the 1 President even though we have more posted trips than all the other kayak clubs on Long Island combined. Right now, we have twenty-five trip leaders, but only about ten have posted Paddle to Rumbas 2 trips so far. Hopefully, more will post trips as the season goes on. With three hundred Bull Head Bay— 3 members in our club, those ten trip leaders would have to post trips every weekend to Scallop Pond accommodate all our members. That’s just not possible. It is a big responsibility to be a trip leader which is why so few members are doing it. The club owes a huge debt of Clip and Save and 4 In the Funnies gratitude to those members who took the time to attend the Trip Leaders’ Workshop in the spring and especially to those leaders who are posting trips.
