  • Ceufad WHAT IS FREESTYLE?
Get Some Style Article: Chris Brain WHAT IS FREESTYLE? Whilst taking a well-earned rest on the bank at the National Watersports Centre in Nottingham, having just had a fantastic freestyle session on the course, I was busy watching some of the local paddlers do their thing on the water. They were busy going end over end and making their boat fly all over the feature when I overheard a conversation between a mother and her young son, Son Look mum that man is nearly falling in all the time! Mum Yes son, they don’t seem to be able to keep their boat in a straight line Son What do you think they are trying to do? Are they trying to get back up the river? Mum I don’t know, but it does look very dangerous don’t you think? It was at that moment that I was once again reminded that unless you know what you are looking at, freestyle paddling is a very unique and confusing discipline in our sport. Freestyle (or as it has been known previously playboating and rodeo) is all about performing dynamic moves, tricks and spins with your kayak (or even canoe!). It is exceptionally creative and dynamic, and like most areas of paddlesport is constantly evolving. When describing freestyle to my non-paddling friends I often refer to it as the gymnastics of paddlesport or what BMX is in cycling. • Kaylee Frye, an Incomplete Role Model
Casey Canfield Disciplinary Deliverable 12/16/09 Kaylee Frye, an Incomplete Role Model It’s easy to turn on the TV and find shows about how fun and exciting it is to be a doctor, lawyer, or FBI agent – but what about being an engineer? Where’s the glamour and excitement in that? You could try some of the reality shows on the Discovery and Science channels and watch Doing DaVinci, Building it Bigger, or Heavy Metal Task Force. Or maybe you watch American Chopper or Restorer Guy on TLC. The problem is that all of these shows are for and about men and describe men’s relationship with creating and caring for technology. As a female engineer, I find my invisibility in the media problematic. But that is why I got so excited about Joss Whedon’s Firefly, which depicted a woman named Kaylee Frye as the ship’s engineer. In the real world, some women have difficulty balancing their desires to be feminine and their desire to be taken seriously as an engineer. Since engineers are coded as masculine, feminine-presenting women are automatically taken less seriously as engineers. While this tension was reflected in Kaylee’s character, there were missing elements in her back story that made her feel less real. Where and how did she learn so much about engines? What was her childhood like? Was becoming an engineer her life’s ambition? Granted, she’s a relatively minor character and the series ended incomplete, but the issues that were left unresolved reflect the issues that women in engineering engage with every day.

  • Genre Bending Narrative, VALHALLA Tells the Tale of One Man’S Search for Satisfaction, Understanding, and Love in Some of the Deepest Snows on Earth
62 Years The last time Ken Brower traveled down the Yampa River in Northwest Colorado was with his father, David Brower, in 1952. This was the year his father became the first executive director of the Sierra Club and joined the fight against a pair of proposed dams on the Green River in Northwest Colorado. The dams would have flooded the canyons of the Green and its tributary, Yampa, inundating the heart of Dinosaur National Monument. With a conservation campaign that included a book, magazine articles, a film, a traveling slideshow, grassroots organizing, river trips and lobbying, David Brower and the Sierra Club ultimately won the fight ushering in a period many consider the dawn of modern environmentalism. 62 years later, Ken revisited the Yampa & Green Rivers to reflect on his father's work, their 1952 river trip, and how we will confront the looming water crisis in the American West. 9 Minutes.
