If their fortunes could not have differed more greatly from four years ago, something similar could be said for Spain. • Spain drew 1-1 with Greece in their second outing at UEFA EURO 2004™ before a 1-0 defeat by Portugal then sent them spinning out of the tournament. Luis Aragonés's team, by contrast, made sure of their quarter-final place with a game to spare on Saturday after a last-gasp victory against Sweden. • David Villa's 92nd-minute goal snatched three points against Sweden after Zlatan Ibrahimović (34) had cancelled out Fernando Torres' 15th-minute opener. Villa built on his opening-game exploits against Russia, scoring a hat-trick (20, 44, 75) before Cesc Fàbregas (90+1) registered his first international goal in a 4-1 triumph. • Spain went into the teams' UEFA EURO 2004™ meeting in Porto as favourites and took a 28th-minute lead through Fernando Morientes, but a 66th-minute Angelos Charisteas strike earned Greece a share of the spoils.

  • Greece & Panama
Location site Located just 7 km (5 miles) south west of Athens, Piraeus is a limestone peninsula offering natural harbors which the Athenians exploited to create what, at its height in the 5th century BCE, would be the most important port and biggest naval base in the Greek world. As a result the "ancient" Piraeus flourished and became a port of high security with a great commercial activity. The Peloponnesian War, the Roman invasion, the destruction by Syllas as well as the final invasion by the Goths (395 BC) led Piraeus to a prolonged period of decline, which was to last for about 15 centuries. In 1829 new settlers arrived in Piraeus and in 1835, the Municipality of Piraeus is established During the first four decades of the 20th century, the city continues its steady growth in all sectors. In addition to being the largest marine–based shipping centre of Greece, Piraeus is also the commercial hub of Greek shipping, with most of Greece's shipowners basing their commercial operations there. Piraeus has also played a major role in Greek sport. The city boasts the most popular and one of the most prestigious Greek multisport clubs, Olympiacos CFP. • 2836 Eintracht Braunschweig Gmbh & Co
Tribunal Arbitral du Sport Court of Arbitration for Sport Arbitration CAS 2012/A/2836 Eintracht Braunschweig GmbH & Co. KG a.A. v. Olympiacos FC, award of 24 January 2013 Panel: Prof. Luigi Fumagalli (Italy), President; Mr Martin Schimke (Germany); Prof. Petros Mavroidis (Greece) Football Transfer agreement CAS power of review (de novo hearing) Unjustified damage claim against a club 1. Under Article R57 of the CAS Code, the CAS panel has the power to “review the facts and the law” and issue a new decision that replaces the decision challenged. The CAS panel consequently hears de novo the dispute between the parties, and is not limited to the consideration of the submissions filed before the FIFA Single Judge. This implies that, even if a violation of the principle of due process, or of the appellant’s right to be heard, occurred in prior proceedings, it may be cured, at least to the extent such violation did not finally impair the appellant’s rights, by a full appeal to the CAS. Furthermore, however “appellate” in the name, the “appeals” arbitration has the nature of a first instance jurisdictional review of a decision rendered by an association. Therefore, procedural rules and principles applicable to the relations between a first instance and an appeals body do not apply with respect to the relations between an internal association body and the CAS. 2. A club’s claim for payment on an alleged liability of another club for damages related to the loss of a player caused by a violation of the principle “venire contra factum proprium” is not well founded where the club had lost the player in any event not because of a wrongful behaviour of the other club, but only because of the operation of a clause in the employment agreement with the player, when its team was relegated to a lower division.

  • The Soccer Culture of Greece
History of Soccer in Greece y The game of soccer appeared for the first time in Greece at the end of the 19th century and more specifically in 1866. y It was brought to the Greek ports by English sailors. y According to the tradition, the first soccer match was played on January 29th of 1866, on the island of Corfu (Kerkyra). The story goes that the officers of a British warship, which was stationed in the port of Corfu, wanted to play a game with a team formed by the locals. The Greeks were unfamiliar with the sport, yet they still managed to win that first football match on Greek soil, attended by over 3,000 spectators. History of Soccer in Greece y The first soccer games among Greeks took place in unofficially in 1899. y The first Greek championship took place in 1906. y In 1907 soccer becomes part of the physical education program of elementary and high schools and at that time the first school teams are created. y After a hiatus during the Balkan wars and the Asia Minor catastrophe, soccer becomes a major part of the Greek life after 1920s. y Social History of Soccer in Greece y Before the WWII soccer was part of the working class’ entertainment and culture. y It provided the working class with the sense that they belong to a certain unique community, a special social environment that existed independently from those of the upper and middle classes. y In the 1960s, soccer becomes professional and the fans of the sport are now members of all social classes.
