SOUTHEAST ASIA LIFE MATTERS COURSE, VIETNAM The second Southeast Asia Life Matters Course, hosted in Dalat, Vietnam in June brought together 29 participants from eight countries and an equally diverse group of cross-cultural helpers from around the Asia-Pacific region. Joe Garner, former head of HSBC Bank UK, gave the opening address. Other keynote speakers came from the corporate and grass roots levels. The TIGE conferences focus on ways to pro- mote ethical decision-making, economic and environmental sustainability, and justice. The TIGERoadshows were held at Liverpool Hope University’s Department of Business in March and at Sheffield Business School in September. The Roadshows aim to equip participants with an ethical framework, and practical tools, for use in their places of work. Keynote speakers included the renowned business author Margaret Heffernan; Tony Bradley, Director of the SEED Centre (Social and Ethical Enterprise Development), Liverpool; Peter Lewis, CEO of Principled Consulting; and Rikki Griffiths, HSBC Liverpool regional development manager. A businessman from Moldova, who came to Caux for the first time, was very inspired and has decided to invest 100% DIALOGUE ON MAKING DEMOCRACY REAL of his profits into social projects.     Turning Points A series of discussions inspired by the ideas of Frank Buchman Introduced and arranged by Philip Boobbyer Introduction This short course has been inspired by the ideas and insights of Frank Buchman (1878-1961), a Lutheran pastor from the United States, who was the founder of the movement known as the Oxford Group and Moral Re-Armament (MRA), and more recently Initiatives of Change. Buchman once said: ‘The world is slow to realise that the spiritual is more powerful than the material.’ That is the insight that underpins these discussions. The format and atmosphere is intended to be conversational and reflective. In response to the questions listed under each heading, participants are encouraged to share experiences from their lives, and think collectively about what makes for lasting change in people and the world. Many of the themes raised in the course have been explored in my book, The Spiritual Vision of Frank Buchman (2013). Course structure There are eight main themes. It is envisaged that groups doing the course might cover one of these in each session, but the questions listed in each section are mostly very broad in scope, and some may prefer to give more time to certain subjects than others. It will not be possible to address every question in equal depth. There are also some questions entered under one heading that could equally be discussed under another. People doing the course might find it helpful to have a preliminary meeting to look at the themes as a whole, and consider what they hope to get out of the discussions.

  • The Oxford Group Takes Root in Switzerland
    The Hotel run by the Guests The hotel run by the guests en days later, on 18th July, Frank Buchman and his team of friends arrive from Britain. In the Swiss village T of Vallorbe, on the frontier with France, 150 sit down to breakfast with the mayor. One of the party recalls: ‘We were wakened early as the train came to a shuddering halt at the border...There was a station café on the platform, and any initial annoyance at being wakened by officialdom turned to bliss when Swiss breakfast arrived. The sun shone bright and warm, and the crisp rolls and croissants melted in the mouth; there were beautiful swirls of real butter, black cherry jam and absolutely delicious real coffee. The contrast between this and the kind of food available in post-war England was all too vivid.’1 Buchman hurries on to Caux by car, while the rest of the party come on by coach. It is raining as he arrives. He notes at the front door that he was in Caux before any of the others there present – he’d visited the Caux Palace Hotel for tea in its days of glory as a Palace Hotel in 1903, during a European tour.
