Growth of population has reached such dimensions and speed that it has caused wide spread anxiety and bewilderment. Obviously population trends and their implications have evoked much attention than at any time. Throughout the many thousands of years of man’s existence human population has been increasing but recently for the first time in history at such a seemingly rapid rate that there is essentially an explosion in human numbers. Within the past two centuries alone the increase in population has been four times greater than in all the previous countless years of man’s existence. The experience of the developing countries in recent years is quite different perhaps contrary from that in economically advanced countries during the course of their economic progress. The developing countries today are almost by definition countries with rapid population growth. 1 Acceleration in population growth at the early phase of economic development has proved growth to be an obstacle for economic and social progress throughout the less developed regions. Recently most of the developing countries realizing the compounding effect of population growth in their economic have taken steps to bring population growth in balance with resources. Mainly since the sixties a number of countries examined the possibility of lowering birth rates through National Family Welfare Programmes. Some of them have made significant achievements. But in general the current levels of institutional family welfare programmes are still having marginal effects on total population involved. Today the population of India is about one thousand and twenty one million and it is increasing at the rate of 1.61 per cent. Although India claims only the second place in the world regarding with the human numbers, it tops the list among nations from the point of view of absolute annual addition to total population and with only about 2.4 per cent of the world’s total area.

  • Segments-Of-Environment
INTRODUCTION 1.1. Definition-Environment The word Environment is derived from the French word “Environ” which means “surrounding”. Our surrounding includes biotic factors like human beings, Plants, animals, microbes, etc and abiotic factors such as light, air, water, soil, etc. Environment is a complex of many variables, which surrounds man as well as the living organisms. Environment includes water, air and land and the inter- relation ships which exist among and between water, air and land and human beings and other living creatures such as plants, animals and micro organisms (Kalavathy, 2004).She suggested that environment consists of an inseparable whole system constituted by physical, chemical, biological, social and cultural elements, which are interlinked individually and collectively in myriad ways. The natural environment consist of four interlinking systems namely, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, the lithosphere and the biosphere. These four systems are in constant change and such changes are affected by human activities and vice versa (Kumarasamy et al., 2004). Components of Environment Our environment has been classified into four major components: 1.Hydrosphere, 2.Lithosphere, 3.Atmosphere, 4.Biosphere. Hydrosphere Hydrosphere includes all water bodies such as lakes, ponds, rivers, streams and ocean etc. Hydrosphere functions in a cyclic nature, which is termed as hydrological cycle or water cycle. Lithosphere Lithosphere means the mantle of rocks constituting the earth’s crust. The earth is a cold spherical solid planet of the solar system, which spins in its axis and revolves around the sun at a certain constant distance .Lithosphere mainly, contains soil, earth rocks, mountain etc. Lithosphere is divided into three layers-crusts, mantle and core (outer and inner).

A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE FACULTY in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE By Ramya Palani Norman, Oklahoma 2019 IS GANGAIKONDA CHOLAPURAM BUILT BASED ON VAASTU SASTRA? A THESIS APPROVED FOR THE CHRISTOPHER C. GIBBS COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE BY THE COMMITTEE CONSISTING OF Callahan, Marjorie P., Chair Warnken, Charles G. Fithian, Lee A. ©Copyright by RAMYA PALANI 2019 All Rights Reserved. iv Abstract The Cholas (848 CE – 1279 CE) established an imperial line and united a large portion of what is now South India under their rule. The Cholas, known worldwide for their bronze sculptures, world heritage temples and land reforms, were also able builders. They followed a traditional systematic approach called Vaastu Sastra in building their cities, towns, and villages. In an attempt to discover and reconstruct Gangaikonda Cholapuram, an administrative capital (metropolis) of the Chola Dynasty, evidence is collected from the fragments of living inscriptions, epigraphs, archaeological excavation, secondary sources, and other sources pertinent to Vaastu Sastra. The research combines archival research methodology, archaeological documentation and informal architectural survey. The consolidation, analysis, and manipulation of data helps to uncover the urban infrastructure of Gangaikonda Cholapuram city.
