Today is October 30th, 2020, and I will be interviewing Leonard Forsman, the Chairman of the Suquamish Tribe. My name is Alison DeRiemer, and this interview is being conducted remotely over Zoom. So, Leonard, welcome, and thank you so much for agreeing to be interviewed today. We really appreciate it. I’d just like to start, please, by getting your full name, and where and when you were born. Leonard Forsman: [0:30] Okay. My full name is Leonard Andrew Forsman, and I was born January 25, 1962 in Bremerton, Washington. Alison: [0:41] Okay, great. Can you also tell me your current location where you are today? Leonard: [0:47] I am in Suquamish, Washington, on the Port Madison Indian Reservation. Alison: [0:51] Okay. Great. Could you tell me a little bit about what you know about your Nordic ancestors, even if it’s not a lot. If you know any names, where they might have come from, where they immigrated to—if you know any of that information. Leonard: [1:10] Okay. Well, my paternal grandfather… My father was James William Forsman. His father was Alexander Forsman, who immigrated from Sweden. I don’t know a whole lot about his past, other than I believe the census records show him kind of coming via the Midwest, I believe Indiana, or something like that. -

welcome to Indian Country Take a moment, and look up from where you are right now. If you are gazing across the waters of Puget Sound, realize that Indian peoples thrived all along her shoreline in intimate balance with the natural world, long before Europeans arrived here. If Mount Rainier stands in your view, realize that Indian peoples named it “Tahoma,” long before it was “discovered” by white explorers. Every mountain that you see on the horizon, every stand of forest, every lake and river, every desert vista in eastern Washington, all of these beautiful places are part of our Indian heritage, and carry the songs of our ancestors in the wind. As we have always known, all of Washington State is Indian Country. To get a sense of our connection to these lands, you need only to look at a map of Washington. Over 75 rivers, 13 counties, and hundreds of cities and towns all bear traditional Indian names – Seattle, Tacoma, Yakima, and Spokane among them. Indian peoples guided Lewis and Clark to the Pacifi c, and pointed them safely back to the east. Indian trails became Washington’s earliest roads. Wild salmon, delicately grilled and smoked in Alderwood, has become the hallmark of Washington State cuisine. Come visit our lands, and come learn about our cultures and our peoples. Our families continue to be intimately woven into the world around us. As Tribes, we will always fi ght for preservation of our natural resources. As Tribes, we will always hold our elders and our ancestors in respect. Movie-Going on the Margins: The Mascioli Film Circuit of Northeastern Ontario A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY JESSICA LEONORA WHITEHEAD GRADUATE PROGRAM IN COMMUNICATION AND CULTURE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO February 2018 © Jessica Leonora Whitehead 2018 ii Abstract Northeastern Ontario film exhibitor Leo Mascioli was described as a picture pioneer, a business visionary, “the boss of the Italians,” a strikebreaker and even an “enemy alien” by the federal government of Canada. Despite these various descriptors, his lasting legacy is as the person who brought entertainment to the region’s gold camps and built a movie theatre chain throughout the mining and resource communities of the area. The Porcupine Gold Rush—the longest sustained gold rush in North America—started in 1909, and one year later Mascioli began showing films in the back of his general store. Mascioli first came to the Porcupine Gold Camp as an agent for the mining companies in recruiting Italian labourers. He diversified his business interests by building hotels to house the workers, a general store to feed them, and finally theatres to entertain them. The Mascioli theatre chain, Northern Empire, was headquartered in Timmins and grew to include theatres from Kapuskasing to North Bay. His Italian connections, however, left him exposed to changes in world politics; he was arrested in 1940 and sent to an internment camp for enemy aliens during World War II. This dissertation examines cinema history from a local perspective. The cultural significance of the Northern Empire chain emerges from tracing its business history, from make-shift theatres to movie palaces, and the chain’s integration into the Hollywood-linked Famous Players Canadian national circuit. -

Landmarks Preservation Commission October 23, 1979, Designation List 129 LP-1026 NEW AMSTERDAM THEATER, 214 West 42nd Street, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1902-03; architects Herts & Tallant. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1013, Lot 39. On January 9, 1979, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the New Amsterdam Theater and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 4). The hearing was continued to March 13, 1979 (Item No. 3). Both hearings had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. A total of 16 witnesses spoke in favor of designation at the two hearings. There were two speakers in opposition to designation. Several letters and statements supporting designation have been received. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The New Amsterdam Theater, built in 1902-03 for the theatrical producers Klaw & Erlanger, was for many years one of the most pres tigious Time Square theaters and horne of the famous Ziegfeld Follies. Designed by the noted theater architects, Herts & Tallant, the New Amsterdam Theater achieved distinction both for its functions and for its artistic program. More than just a theater, the structure was planned, at the request of Klaw & Erlanger, to incorporate two performing spaces with an office tower to house their varied theatrical interests. Even more importantly, however, the New Amsterdam is a rare example of Art Nouveau architecture in New York City, and, as such, is a major artistic statement by Herts & Tallant. Working in conjunction with sculptors, painters, and other craftsmen, they used the Art Nouveau style to carry out a dual theme--the representation of the spirit of drama and the theater and the representation of New Amsterdam in its historical sense as the city of New York. -
