Shanghai, China Overview Introduction The name Shanghai still conjures images of romance, mystery and adventure, but for decades it was an austere backwater. After the success of Mao Zedong's communist revolution in 1949, the authorities clamped down hard on Shanghai, castigating China's second city for its prewar status as a playground of gangsters and colonial adventurers. And so it was. In its heyday, the 1920s and '30s, cosmopolitan Shanghai was a dynamic melting pot for people, ideas and money from all over the planet. Business boomed, fortunes were made, and everything seemed possible. It was a time of breakneck industrial progress, swaggering confidence and smoky jazz venues. Thanks to economic reforms implemented in the 1980s by Deng Xiaoping, Shanghai's commercial potential has reemerged and is flourishing again. Stand today on the historic Bund and look across the Huangpu River. The soaring 1,614-ft/492-m Shanghai World Financial Center tower looms over the ambitious skyline of the Pudong financial district. Alongside it are other key landmarks: the glittering, 88- story Jinmao Building; the rocket-shaped Oriental Pearl TV Tower; and the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The 128-story Shanghai Tower is the tallest building in China (and, after the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, the second-tallest in the world). Glass-and-steel skyscrapers reach for the clouds, Mercedes sedans cruise the neon-lit streets, luxury- brand boutiques stock all the stylish trappings available in New York, and the restaurant, bar and clubbing scene pulsates with an energy all its own. Perhaps more than any other city in Asia, Shanghai has the confidence and sheer determination to forge a glittering future as one of the world's most important commercial centers. -

CREIGHTON PREP ALUMNI NEWS MEET MICHAEL MICHAEL GIAMBELLUCA IS PREP'S NEW PRESIDENT ATHLETIC RECORD ENROLLMENT ALUMNI IN THE SUMMER 2013 10 FOR 2013 12 HALL OF FAME 24 WORKPLACE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Greetings I feel blessed and energized to be writing you as I begin my tenure as the 32nd president of Creighton Prep, a school whose formative mission, exceptional quality, loyal following and supportive atmosphere remind me so much of Jesuit High School in New Orleans, where I recently completed my 12th year as principal. Both school communities are so very blessed in so many ways. As I begin my work at Prep, I want to thank the Creighton Prep Governing Board, the Search Committee, my predecessor Father Andy Alexander, S.J. ’66, Tim McIntire at Carney Sandoe & Associates and all the Prep constituents who took the time to be part of the very thorough process that helped select and transition me to my role as president, a position from which I will be honored and humbled to serve a community that means so much to so many people, a community that has already been so welcoming to my wife Donnamaria and me. On page four of this Alumni News, you can find out more about the selection process and my background as well as some of my reflections on education and my priorities going forward. As mentioned there, I will be focused on advancing the mission of Prep for and through all members of our school community. As I begin my tenure, I will be doing a great deal of listening and learning about this wonderful institution, and this process will result in us both celebrating what we are doing well and improving upon what we might be able to do better. -

Going around the conference and asking how people felt about the UN, most dele- gates stammered or gave half-hearted comments about the idea being better than the execution. CISSMUN attendee Alan Deutsch sighed and muttered, “obligatory.” If we, the people who choose to participate in a UN simulation, don’t even have a favorable view of the UN, then what’s the point? What’s the point of MUN if we can’t even agree that the UN is important? The value of MUN is not in the Model of the United Nations. -

2018 PhysicsBowl Results Dear Physics Teachers, Thank you for having your students participate in this year’s AAPT PHYSICSBOWL contest. This year there were more than 7200 students participating from 320 schools from Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as 318 schools participating from China! With the addition of the large number of Chinese schools, the contest is almost in two parts with Regions 00 – 14 competing for prizes from AAPT while ASDAN China is coordinating the contest in China. As a result, for simplicity of trying to read the long lists, there are three files: the list of winners in Regions 00 – 14, the list of winners in Regions 15 – 19, and a list of the top students/teams from all regions in both divisions! Instructors from regions 00 – 14 can obtain the scores of their students from a link that will be provided to you in an email from the national office. Please realize that we were able to retrieve some scores that were disqualified for improperly recording the required information, but this was done after-the-fact. If the information was not encoded correctly, the student was immediately disqualified from winning prizes even though we may be able to link that student to your code now. Some students provided no codes, the wrong regions, no name, just a last name, etc. There are a lot of records and we cannot go back and fill in missing information. -
