The intent of the proposed PEI-NB Cable Interconnection Project (“the Project”) is to meet the growing demand for electricity on PEI and supplement aging infrastructure. Project activities will be carried out over a 16 month period in three distinct geographic regions; PEI, NB and in the Northumberland Strait. Project activities within the Northumberland Strait include the laying of two submarine cables between landfall locations in Cape Tormentine, NB, and Borden-Carleton, PEI. Project activities in PEI consist of the expansion of the existing substation in Borden-Carleton and construction of a cable landfall site. Project activities in NB consist of upgrades to the existing substation in Memramcook, construction of a landfall site and cable termination site in Cape Tormentine and the installation of overhead transmission lines between the cable termination site in Cape Tormentine and the substation in Memramcook.     G.A. RAWLYK Fundamentalism, Modernism and the Maritime Baptists in the 1920s and 1930s MANY ENGLISH-CANADIAN HISTORIANS FIND IT embarrassingly difficult to take religion seriously. As they comb the past for relevance they are keen to avoid any confrontation with spiritual and religious realities. Perhaps they are uncomfortable thinking about such issues. Perhaps, because of the older Whig political bias of so much Canadian historical writing and the newer bias of secular social history, they are determined to float in the mainstream of historiography and not be lost in some shallow cul-de-sac. This somewhat unfair caricature of the Canadian historical profession underscores some of the basic problems confronting the writing of religious history in English Canada in the 1980s. When compared with American historians, English-Canadian historians have significantly downplayed the importance of religion as a formative force in national life. Canadian historical writing, especially that of post World War II period, reflects the devastating impact of what has been referred to as "that process of separation and individualism that modernity seems to entail".1 A sensitive reading of Canadians' collective religious past should bring what Stephen Toulmin has called a degree of "cosmic interrelatedness" back to scholarly investigation.2 Of course, a revived and Americanized Canadian religious history is not the only way to accomplish this end. But if Canadians could begin to discuss critically and openly issues about religion, values, community, individualism, space and time "in ways that did not disaggregate them into fragments", it might still be possible "to find connections and analogies with the older ways in which human life was made meaningful".3 Ironically, within the larger context of the recent historiography of the Maritime Provinces, religious history has not been pushed off into some dark corner of irrelevance, inconsequence, and scholarly oblivion.

    CHAPTER V THE SECOND WORLD WAR TO THE APPOINTMENT OF R. J. FRASER AS DOMINION HYDROGRAPHER 1940-1947 Twelve years had now elapsed since the Canadian Hydrographie Service was last reclassified, and this despite its amalgamation with the Map Service in 1936 and subsequent requests for another general reclassification, or unit survey as it was then called. This review had its commencement in the fall of 1938, and in May 1940 a reclassification of the Hydrographie and Map Service was approved. Since 1898, this was the fourth reclassification of the hydrographie service, and coincidentally its last. In the post-war years departmental heads were granted more authority in matters pertaining to staff and promotions - a procedure that has since proven to be more progressive than the pre-war method. Ironically, the same Order-in-Council that authorized this new classification also introduced the first wartime freeze on civil servants' salaries, and fixed the proportion of permanent staff as of 30 September 1939. As the war became more intense, regulations of the War Measures Act were enforced that imposed more stringent staff and financial controls on employees. One problem that became quite acute was manpower shortage, and to offset this, most civil servants in September 1943 were "frozen" in their positions for the duration. Had he an opportunity to improve his lot elsewhere, departmental approval was necessary, or resign. Senior employees above the $3,000 salary ceiling were in a most frustrating position. They were not eligible for the cost-of-living bonus, and since January 1942 their statutory increases were suspended.

Anne has multiple sclerosis and from her wheelchair expresses her feelings through painting. Her soft, fluid pastels create a sense of calm and contentment, while vibrant splashes of colour convey energy and excitement. Her greatest triumphs come when her paintings evoke special feelings. Many of her commissioned watercolours hang as memorials in Maritime hospitals, while her work is owned also by corporate and academic institutions and individual collectors from around the world. Notable amongst her published work is Grand Pré Rose Garden, which graces the first cover in the Remember When book series.
