THE ARTS PARTNERS™ ARTSWESTCHESTER ARTIST ROSTER A DIRECTORY OF TEACHING ARTISTS 2009/2010 EDITION ArtsPartners: Enriching classrooms and communities....transforming lives! Welcome to ArtsPartners, ArtsWestchester’s arts-in-education program, designed to help educators and other professionals integrate the arts into a variety of settings from classrooms to museums; day care centers to shelters. ArtsPartners is designed to make classrooms and community sites more creative and effective by giving students and participants opportunities to bring learning to life through the arts. At the heart of the program is the ArtsWestchester’s Artist Roster. The Roster is a directory of teaching artists who are eligible to conduct residencies in schools and community sites through ArtsWestchester grants. This array of accomplished teaching artists - actors, dancers, writers, visual artists, and more - are trained to use the arts as an instructional tool. Students and participants learn in and through the art-making process in a sequential series of participatory, creative residency sessions led by these teaching artists and classroom teachers. ArtsPartners is your springboard to deepening knowledge of the curricula, exceeding classroom goals, addressing New York State learning standards, as well as building new-found self-confidence in creative, social, and behavioral abilities. ARTSWESTCHESTER I ArtsPartners Page iii Dear Friends of the Arts: Welcome to ArtsWestchester’s new digital ArtsPartners Handbooks, a reference series designed to help you locate the teaching artists, cultural resources and information you need to develop artist residencies for your school or organization. ArtsWestchester roster offers everything from drama to African dance, calligraphy, felt making, film making, computer graphics and much more. The artists profiled in the Artist Roster have been vetted for artistic teaching competency, with a track record of bringing learning to life through the arts and collaborative skills leading to curriculum integration in the classroom. Increasingly, research is validating the important role the arts play in learning and human development. Involvement in the arts fosters the growth of key cognitive skills. Today’s knowledge- based economy requires workers who can think creatively, solve problems, exercise individual judgment, solve problems and interact effectively with others. Sociability and high self esteem are key components of these abilities. These workforce skills are nurtured through an education in the arts. Through ArtsWestchester you can access the tools and assistance you need to integrate the arts into your programs, enriching the learning experience. If you are not already a member, we invite you to join now. For more information, please contact the Education Programs Department at 914-428 4220 x236 or email [email protected]. Sincerely, Janet T. Langsam Executive Director ArtsWestchester Page iv ARTSWESTCHESTER I ArtsPartners Dear Friends: I am pleased to partner with ArtsWestchester to bring you the digital ArtsPartners Handbook Series. In addition to being an important engine of economic development, the arts are a fundamental resource for our schools and communities. Bringing an artist into the classroom or community center breathes life into learning. Exposing students and citizens to Westchester’s abundance of world class cultural institutions introduces them to new worlds of creativity and possibility. ArtsWestchester offers a special opportunity to schools and community sites to deepen the learning experience through hands-on art residencies in which students become active participants rather than observers, producing opportunities for knowledge, understanding and skill development unmatched by purely theoretical classroom exercises. As the County Executive of Westchester, I am proud of our artists and artistic institutions who through the arts, educate, entertain, and inspire each of us. ArtsWestchester has done a wonderful job in assembling the Arts Partners Series and I hope you will consider making use of these important cultural resources in your classrooms and programs. Sincerely, Andrew J. Spano Westchester County Executive ARTSWESTCHESTER I ArtsPartners Page v THE ARTIST ROSTER A Directory of Professional Teaching Artists in Westchester This directory contains contact and biographical information on more than 100 teaching artists who have passed ArtsWestchester’s rigorous screening process. Each has proven his or her artistic and teaching competency in the classroom and community sites, and has a strong record of bringing learning to life through art. Artists are evaluated on the following criteria: (1) quality of work and professional accomplishments, (2) ability to work in collaboration with school and community site coordinators, (3) communication skills, and (4) qualitative work experience. To help guide your selection of artists, the panel recommends artists for various types of residencies. We encourage you to select an artist whose eligibility matches your project.
