69 Ellen Glasgow’s In This Our Life DOI: 10.2478/abcsj-2019-0016 American, British and Canadian Studies, Volume 33, December 2019 Ellen Glasgow’s In This Our Life: “The Betrayals of Life” in the Crumbling Aristocratic South IULIA ANDREEA MILICĂ Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași, Romania Abstract Ellen Glasgow’s works have received, over time, a mixed interpretation, from sentimental and conventional, to rebellious and insightful. Her novel In This Our Life (1941) allows the reader to have a glimpse of the early twentieth-century South, changed by the industrial revolution, desperately clinging to dead codes, despairing and struggling to survive. The South is reflected through the problems of a family, its sentimentality and vulnerability, but also its cruelty, pretensions, masks and selfishness, trying to find happiness and meaning in a world of traditions and codes that seem powerless in the face of progress. The novel, apparently simple and reduced in scope, offers, in fact, a deep insight into various issues, from complicated family relationships, gender pressures, racial inequality to psychological dilemmas, frustration or utter despair. The article’s aim is to depict, through this novel, one facet of the American South, the “aristocratic” South of belles and cavaliers, an illusory representation indeed, but so deeply rooted in the world’s imagination. Ellen Glasgow is one of the best choices in this direction: an aristocratic woman but also a keen and profound writer, and, most of all, a writer who loved the South deeply, even if she exposed its flaws. Alice Walker's the Color Purple
Alice Walker's The Color Purple RUTH EL SAFFAR, University of Illinois Alice Walker's The Color Purple (1982) is the work that has made a writer who has published consistently good writing over the past decade and a half into some thing resembling a national treasure. Earlier works, like her collection of short stories, In Love and Trouble (1973), and her poems, collected under the title Revo lutionary Petunias and Other Poems (1973), have won awards.' And there are other novels, short stories, poems, and essays that have attracted critical attention.2 But with The Color Purple, which won both the American Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, Alice Walker has made it onto everyone's reading list, bringing into our consciousness with clarity and power the long-submerged voice of a black woman raised southern and poor. Although Celie, the novel's principal narrator/character, speaks initially from a deeply regional and isolated perspective, both she and the novel ultimately achieve a vision which escapes the limitations of time and space. The Color Purple is a novel that explores the process by which one discovers one's essential value, and learns to claim one's own birthright. It is about the magical recovery of truth that a world caught in lies has all but obscured. Shug Avery, the high-living, self-affirming spirit through whom the transfor mation of the principal narrator/character takes place reveals the secret at a crucial point: "God is inside you and inside everybody else. You come into the world with God. But only them that search for it inside find it. -

"The Story of a Dead Man" was published in the 1978 short story collection, Elbow Room by James Alan McPherson. That collection won the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for fiction the first awarded to an African American for fiction writing. Prof. McPherson taught at the prestigious Iowa Writer's Workshop at U of IA for decades, where he mentored some of our best living writers. He died in the summer of 2016. Please be aware: This story contains strong language, both racist and misogynistic. The story contains a degree of violence and criminality. Nonetheless, the story is profoundly humorous and humane. Margaret Mitchell‘s Gone with the Wind was published in 1936 and Robert Hicks‘ The Widow of the South was published in 2005. These two novels are written nearly seventy years apart. The protagonists of these two Civil War novels are very different, but still it is worth taking a look at the difference in attitude that the two novelists have in regard to women and slavery in the seventy-year span between the two novels. It is interesting to take a closer look at the portrayal by the two authors of the kind of lives these women lived, and what similarities and differences can be seen in the protagonists as pertaining to their education and upbringing. Also, how the women‘s lives were affected by living in a society which condoned slave ownership. The Civil War brought about changes in the women‘s lives both during its course and in its aftermath. Not only were the lives of the women affected but that of the slaves as well. The authors, through their writing, depicted aspects of the institution of slavery, especially how the slave hierarchy worked and what made one slave ―better‖ than the next. -

MADIHUR REHMAN DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY ALIGARH (INDIA) 2013 Abstract The first chapter of the thesis, "The Path to Doom: America from Idea to Reality;'" takes the journey of America from its conception as an idea to its reality. The country that came into existence as a colony of Great Britain and became a refuge of the exploited and the persecuted on one hand and of the outlaws on other hand, soon transformed into a giant machine of exploitation, persecution and lawlessness, it is surprising to see how the noble ideas of equality, liberty and democracy and pursuit of happiness degenerated into callous profiteering. Individuals insensitive to the needs and happiness of others and arrogance based on a sense of racial superiority even before they take root in the virgin soil of the Newfoundland. The effects cf this degenerate ideology are felt not only by the Non-White races within America and the less privileged countries of the third world, but even by the Whites within America. The concepts of equality, freedom, democracy and pursuit of happiness were manufactured and have been exploited by the American ruling class.The first one to experience the crawling effects of the Great American Dream were original inhabitants of America, the Red Indians and later Blacks who were uprooted from their home and hearth and taken to America as slaves. -
