MiguEL ORtuñO PaLaO... 629 Prologo La historia de la educación es un relato fundamentado que recorre la crónica del mayor y más eficaz empeño con que los seres humanos hemos buscado el progreso personal y social a través de la transmisión y adquisición de conocimientos y de valores morales. Cuando echa- mos la vista atrás y repasamos los avatares por los que la educación ha llegado a ser lo que es hoy la primera reflexión que surge de forma inmediata es la dureza del camino recorrido y lo mucho que nuestra sociedad ha progresado, muy especialmente en los últimos cincuenta años. De las escuelas de adobe, cañas, tablas y barro, hemos pasado a unos centros educativos muy bien dotados que no tienen nada que envidiar a los de los países de nuestro entorno; de las pizarras de pie- dra pesada, negra y noble, hemos llegado a las pizarras digitales que estamos implantando ahora en nuestras aulas; del “cada maestrillo tiene su librillo”, al diseño de programas de formación del profesorado con los mejores profesionales y las metodologías más avanzadas; de las escuelas unitarias a unas pedagogías atentas a la diversidad de los alumnos; de la autoridad sin consenso a la puesta en marcha de polí- ticas y estrategias que nacen como fruto del diálogo permanente y del acuerdo de todos los agentes que intervienen en el proceso educativo. Con todo, el estudio de la historia no debe nunca ser la excusa para que nos instalemos en la quietud del presente sobre la mullida satis- facción de lo mucho que ya hemos logrado. Debemos leer la historia de la educación como quien busca un motivo, un refuerzo, para seguir cambiando, como lo hicieron quienes nos precedieron; para seguir progresando, desde el consenso, desde el esfuerzo común y desde el 11 mO aEstR s y EsCuELas En La REgión de muRCia 1750-1950 compromiso de todos con un ideal de la enseñanza que se haga car- go de las complejidades de la sociedad actual y que sirva para que nuestros hijos encuentren la educación que garantice su futuro moral, intelectual y laboral. It focuses on women who gained prominence as visionaries and thus became targets of inquisitorial scrutiny, because Inquisition documents are the traditional source base for historians to reach these otherwise (typically) voiceless individuals and communities. The field has traditionally argued that the power, number, and presence of these visionary women slowly declined throughout the early modern period owing to the pressures of the Counter-Reformation. Catholic reformers at the Council of Trent (1545–1563) specifically identified female lay and religious visionaries—who had grown rampant after Catherine of Siena became a famous visionary and religious leader in the fourteenth century— as threats to the Catholic canon.

Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses.

Davis, Adviser Professor Rebecca Haidt ________________________ Adviser Professor Donald Larson Department of Spanish and Portuguese ABSTRACT This dissertation studies the dream narratives and accompanying interpolated semipicaresque stories of Antonio Enríquez Gómez in order to understand the satirizing aims of an exiled Spanish New Christian author. In El siglo pitagórico y vida de don Gregorio Guadaña, La torre de Babilonia, and La inquisición de Lucifer y visita de todos los diablos, Enríquez Gómez addresses corruption and deceit in the dominant ideology. Using allegorical settings whose satirical characteristics reflect the seventeenth century, Enríquez Gómez calls for the reform of greed, false appearances, and pride. The dissertation explores how, within the framework of Judeo-Christian teachings, the author challenges the social order of places such as a fictionalized Babylon and an infernal Inquisition that in varying degrees are metaphors for Spain. The dissertation also argues that the New Christian perspective of Enríquez Gómez’s works differentiates them from similar texts of his contemporary, Francisco de Quevedo, by substituting converso dissillusionment for the “stock” Golden Age type. This perspective is evident in Enríquez Gómez’s criticism of the Spanish Inquisition; in a definition of original sin that reflects a converso’s exile, longing, and rootlessness; and in the assertion of the superiority of virtuous deeds to ethnicity.

She earned her doctorate degree in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Sci- ence, and currently researches and teaches at the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno. She has conducted unparalleled fieldwork and investigation with Basques from communities in over twenty coun- tries and regularly serves as a consultant for institutions in the Basque Country. Her work has been awarded and recognized internationally, including the Vasca Mun- dial, Worldly Basque, award in 2003, and when selected as the President of the Committee of Academic Experts from the Eusko Ikaskuntza, or Basque Studies Society, initiative for EuskoSare, a worldwide network for Basque studies. Dr. Totoricagüena collaborates in various research projects with homeland institutions and with those of the Basque diaspora. She is a permanent delegate to the North American Basque Organizations, and has repre- sented the United States in each of the World Congresses of Basque Collectivities. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis focuses directly upon the lived experiences of priests and lay Catholics who, driven by their faith, remained loyal to the Republic or otherwise refused to identify with the rebel cause during the Spanish Civil War (1936-9). It shows that their ability to make sense of the war outside of the Church-backed, rebel narrative of ‘crusade’ hinged centrally on their own understandings of their Catholic faith and its translation into experience. Not least was their recognition of the religious violence at the start of the war as the violent accumulation of larger political, social, and cultural clashes in which the Church had been a central protagonist. From there, it examines their participation in the wartime Republic, arguing that these individuals were agents of their own survival, not simply ‘un-murdered victims’ of revolutionary violence saved by divine intervention, as the epistemological categories of Francoist mythologies would have it. Rather, they were active participants in the Republic, even amidst the pressures of an increasingly fraught war effort, as the Republic fought not only to reconstruct its image as a modernising liberal democracy, and to translate that image into reality for its entire citizenry, but for its very survival.
