Las Posadas is a traditional religious holiday lasting nine days, from December 16—December 24, Christmas Eve. The holiday first originated from the Aztecs. They had a nine day celebration that celebrated the birth of the sun God. St. Ignatius wanted to convert the holiday to a Christian one and started nine days of prayer. It is a common tradition in Mexico and some Central American countries. “Las Posadas” translated in Spanish comes from the word “The Inns”. The custom involves reenacting Joseph and Mary’s troubles on their trip to Bethlehem to report for the Census. Each house and family would pick a night to host for the posada celebration. The host for the night represents the innkeeper, the children and adults represent Joseph and Mary. The children and adults, then begin to approach the house from the outside, singing a traditional song request- ing lodging and each person carries a candle. When they have reached the door, they will knock and seek lodg- ing reciting the traditional song. They will all be denied lodging two or three times, and then they will be let inside. Ince inside, everyone kneels araoud the nativity scene and recites the traditional rosary prayer. After the prayer is over, there is lots of food and a party for the children. Las Posadas festival is a Mexican and Cen- tral American holiday celebration that has strong cultural significance and a colorful history behind it. If you ever get the chance to participate, don’t pass it up!

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE 96 OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE Which version do you prefer? Crown or No Crown? On December 12, 2017, we will be celebrating the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patroness of the Americas, and the patroness of the unborn. It’s a day in which we also particularly keep in prayer our brothers and sisters of our parish mission church, Our Lady of Guada- lupe Catholic Church, here in Fredericksburg.

Our Lady of Guadalupe first appeared to St. Juan Diego on December 9, 1531. St. Juan Diego was a recently converted Aztec Indian. Bishop Zummaraga had been praying to Our Lady to intercede for him since there was great division and tension between the Spanish rulers and the Aztec Indians. It seemed as if a great war was forthcoming for the people of Mexico. The apparitions to St. Juan Diego, were the beginning of a great answer to the Bishop’s prayer. St. Juan Diego was asked by Our Lady to build a church for her on a hill at Tepeyac. The location today is now part of Mexico City. The hill was com- pletely barren at the time. The young convert immediately went to the bishop, and the bishop requested that St. Juan Diego ask Our Lady for a sign.

The miracle came on December 12, when Castilian roses appeared on the once barren hill. These roses were unique to , and Bishop Zummaraga loved them. St. Juan Diego gathered the roses in his tilma, which was similar to an apron, but made of cactus fibers. Our Lady arranged the roses and asked that St. Juan Diego not open the tilma until he was in the presence of the bishop. St. Juan Diego obeyed, and to the miraculous surprise of the Bishop, not only did he see the beautiful roses that were unexpected in this new land, but he saw the beau- tiful image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the exact image pictured above on the top left of this article. This image converted millions Aztecs to Christianity! But why?

The image reads as an Aztec pictograph. It shows that Our Lady is greater than the Aztec sun-god, “Huitzilopochtli,” for she is standing in front of the sun. It also shows her feet above the feather serpent, “Quetzalcoatl,” the foremost god of the time, whom she has vanquished. The stars on the mantle represented that she was greater than the stars of which they worshipped. The blue green hue represented that she was a queen for that was the color of royalty for the Aztecs. The black cross on the brooch at her neck represented that her God was the same one of the Spanish missionaries. The black belt was a maternity belt that signified to the Aztecs that she was with child. Her hands in prayer represented that she was serving another. There are so many other signs of significance as well, and thus immediately the image was understood and revealed to the Aztecs that Our Lady is the true queen and that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior as the Spanish missionaries had professed.

The image on the top left is the original and can still be viewed and venerated in Mexico City at the Basilica, near to where the apparitions took place. The image on the upper right was a painting that depicted Our Lady with a crown. The crown was significant to the Spanish in sixteenth century, and to many of European descent today, but would not signify the queen of the native Aztec people. The teal color of royalty did it. Today we can admire both images and be grateful for Our Lady’s intercession that intends to bring all races together! 10 ST. MARY’S SCHOOL
