Collection Description

Biographical Note Vincent Gordon Harding was born in City in 1931 and grew up in and . He attended public schools and graduated in History from the in 1952. He earned an MS degree in journalism at in 1953. After two years in the Army (1953-1955), Harding lived in Chicago for six years, serving as lay minister in churches on Chicago's South Side and working on graduate studies at the . Harding married Rosemarie Freeney in 1960, and they spent four years as workers in the freedom movement, assisting the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and Congress of Racial Equality throughout the South. During the years from 1961-1964, they were supported by the Service Committee of the Mennonite Church as they headed an interracial work project, The Mennonite House in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1964 Harding returned to Chicago to complete his doctorate degree in History, which he accomplished in 1965. In the spring of 1965, Vincent Harding returned to Atlanta to chair the History and Sociology Department at Spelman College (1964-1969). During his last year at Spelman, Harding also worked to help organize the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center, including the Library- Documentation Project and the Institute of the Black World. In 1970 when the Institute became an independent entity, Harding's relationship to the King Center ended and he became director of the Institute. He remained with the Institute until 1974.

Scope and Content Note The collection consists of the papers of Vincent Harding from 1952-2014. The papers document Harding's work with the Mennonite Church, Spelman College, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center; the Institute of the Black World, subject files, writings, printed materials and personal papers. The bulk of the collection includes papers from Harding's years in Atlanta, Georgia (1966-1974). The largest part of the collection consists of papers of The Institute of the Black World (1968-1974), which Harding directed from its inception as a component of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center (1969) through its early years as an independent organization (1970-1974). Included in the papers of the Institute is correspondence, including general correspondence (1968-1974) and a large number of inter-office and committee memoranda. These papers also include files documenting Harding's teaching career at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia (1966-1969); his tenure as the first director of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center and the Library Documentation Project at the Center from 1968-1970 and his work with the Mennonite Church from 1968-1970. There are also extensive files of printed materials in various formats indicating a wide interest in a variety of topics. In the subject files there is evidence of his commitment to establishing programs relating to African American curricula in colleges and universities (1960s). There is also evidence of his interest and participation in many national efforts and organizations relating to African American causes. The writings in the Harding papers include drafts of many of Harding's articles and speeches as well as the typescript of his dissertation on Lyman Beecher (1965). Harding kept voluminous notes, outlines and lists on various aspects of his work, and many of those notes are included. He also kept typescripts, photocopies, and reprints of the works of large numbers of individuals, and those materials are also present.

Scope and Content Note This series is comprised of small amounts of correspondence and miscellaneous files. The correspondence dates from 1958-1970 and relates to speaking engagements, conferences, and various responsibilities and affairs of the Mennonite Church. Miscellaneous files (1959-1970) consist of reports from various Mennonite groups involved in retreats, mission projects, and conferences; agendas and minutes; and a small amount of printed materials, including programs, newsletters, and clippings.

Scope and Content Note Spelman College files consist of correspondence, departmental files, teaching files, and miscellaneous files. Correspondence dates from 1966-1969 and pertains to Harding's involvement in programs and conferences, writings, and other professional aspects of his teaching career. Departmental files contain materials relating to courses of study, including course outlines of various faculty members; memoranda; departmental self study reports (1968); and files relating to the Atlanta University Center and to faculty recruitment. Teaching files include course outlines, lecture notes, assignments, schedules and exam questions for courses in African American history taught by Harding. Miscellaneous files are comprised of materials relating to the Black Heritage television series [CBS], 1968-1969; directories; and files pertaining to other institutions of the Atlanta University Center.

Scope and Content Note This series includes correspondence, files relating to the Library Documentation Project, and miscellaneous files. The correspondence (1968-1970) includes letters pertaining to the establishment of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center and to the organizing of the Library Documentation Project. There is also a small number of letters (1970) relating to the early days of the Institute of the Black World [see Institute of the Black World series for the bulk of this correspondence.] The Library Documentation Project includes papers relating to the opening of the library at the Martin Luther Jr., Memorial Center (1969); staff notes and memoranda; bibliographies of materials held by the library; some legal and financial records; and reports. Miscellaneous files consist of records of the Center's organization, including statement of purpose, by-laws, proposals, job descriptions, fundraising efforts; and governing groups. They also include progress reports (1969-1970), staff evaluations and recruitment efforts.

Scope and Content Note This series consists of office files, program/project files, and miscellaneous files. The office files are comprised of organizational records, including records pertaining to the separation of the Institute of the Black World from the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center (September 1970); administrative structure; and reorganization (1970-1971). Office files also include general correspondence (1968-1974); memoranda from staff and various committees within the Institute; agendas and minutes of staff and committee meetings; and reports, including annual and interim reports of the Institute; committee and task force reports, and reports on various programs. The subseries also includes financial/legal records and miscellaneous files pertaining to mailing lists, directories, and staff development. Program/project files include materials on various aspects of the Institute program relating to fundraising; publishing; and seminars, workshops and symposia; as well as proposals for many projects. Also present are materials pertaining to specific projects. Of particular note are the Luthauli Project, 1971-1973 [see also, subject files series] and the Black Agenda Network. Miscellaneous files are comprised of notes (1968-1973), drafts of letters, and transcriptions of a series of lectures on the Role of the Black Scholar (1971).

Scope and Content Note This series consists of writings by Vincent Harding and writings by other individuals from 1956-1973. Included in the writings of Vincent Harding are a small number of student papers as well as his dissertation on Lyman Beecher (1965) Also present are many articles, addresses, and notes regarding a variety of topics. Scope and Content Note Born digital materials include files taken from 146 3.5" floppy disks, four Zip disks, two optical discs, and one external hard drive. Materials part of the 2017 addition. Files include articles and electronic clippings, documents, photographs, teaching materials, and Veterans of Hope materials dating from 1995 to 2005.

Arrangement Note Arranged into four folders: (1) Floppy disks, (2) Hard drive, (3) Optical discs, and (4) Zip disks.Access copies retain original folder titles and file names.

Restrictions on access Access to processed born digital materials is only available in the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library (the Rose Library). Use of the original digital media is restricted.

Processing Note Forensic disk images were created from the floppy disks using Kryoflux, and from the Zip disks, optical discs, and hard drive using GuyMager. Individual files were extracted using FTK Imager and scanned for viruses using McAfee’s anti-virus software; none were found. Duplicate and system files have been removed, and files were scanned for personally identifiable information; none were found. Text-based files were migrated to PDF using Adobe Acrobat and image files were migrated to JPG using Microsoft Paint. File dates have been changed from the original creation date. Access copies retain original folder titles and file names.
