POSITION DESCRIPTION – Professional Services Staff For levels 6/7 and above Position Title: Transmission Electron Microscopy Specialist Professional Level: 6/7 Faculty/Division: Australian Institute of Innovative Materials (AIIM) School/Unit: Electron Microscopy Centre (EMC) Primary purpose of the position: This position will be responsible for support of day-to-day operations of a field emission gun scanning/transmission electron microscope (STEM) JEOL F200; assist in operation and maintenance of flagship instrument STEM ARM 200X and samples preparation in the Centre; contribute to the research objectives of users of the Electron Microscopy Centre (EMC) by providing training and support services. Position Environment: The EMC is located at the Innovation Campus, provides high quality microscopy services, training and support for university and external users. This position will work with researchers and students throughout the university, other staff of the Centre and industry and research partners to support microscopy-based research of the highest quality. Engaging in activities to support the development of the Electron Microscopy Centre SELECTION CRITERIA: HRD-REC-TEM-013 Position Description Profesional Services Staff Level 6 and above Template March 2016 Page 2 of 4 Essential: • PhD degree in physics, materials science/engineering or related fields. • Demonstrated experience in operation and maintenance of transmission electron microscope • Knowledge and operating experience in aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy • Demonstrated ability to operate and maintain ancillary equipment in the Electron Microscopy Centre • Demonstrated ability in STEM data acquisition and analysis • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and solve problems in a service environment. • Excellent English communication skills (both verbal and written) and the ability to interact with individuals at all levels and from culturally diverse backgrounds Desirable • Comprehensive computer/IT skills • Understanding of and experience in electrical and mechanical maintenance Personal Attributes: Ability to work both under guidance and independently, and transfer knowledge to others. Ability to detect technical problems and find solutions. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Team player. Special Job Requirements: May be required to work outside of standard business hours and perform other duties as required for the effective and efficient operation of the Electron Microscopy Centre. After hours attendance may be required to deal with equipment emergencies.
