P. 2 1 Digit zed by Google \ PREFACE AT the request of the Board of Education, I have .fi. endeavored to write a simple and concise history of the Hawaiian people, which, it is hoped, may be useful to the teachers and higher classes in our schools. As there is, however, no book in existence that covers the whole ground, and as the earlier histories are entirely out of print, it has been deemed best to prepare not merely a school-book, but a history for the benefit of the general public. This book has been written in the intervals of a labo rious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race. This history is not merely a compilation. It is based upon a careful study of the original authorities, the writer having had the use of the principal existing collections of Hawaiian manuscripts, and having examined the early archives of the government, as well as nearly all the existing materials in print. -

THE HALE NAUA SOCIETY In late 1998, the Hawaiian Historical Society and the Hawai'i Com- mittee for the Humanities undertook sponsorship of the translation of the records of the Hale Naua Society, a cultural organization founded by King Kalakaua.1 The planned focus of the translation was the material within manuscript collection M-469 at the Hawai'i State Archives, including minutes of meetings and the original constitu- tion and by-laws of the society. Manuscript Group 469 also contains speeches, membership records, reference data, notes, and records in English as well as in Hawaiian. Because the 1886 Hawaiian manu- script of the constitution and by-laws differs from English-language versions (1886 and 1890), a new translation was deemed worthwhile. In the midst of background research, an important and uncatalogued manuscript was located at the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society and added to the documents to be translated. The fifty-eight-page Buke Oihana, or ritual book, of the Hale Naua Society provides a fas- cinating glimpse of a syncretic blend of Hawaiian culture and West- ern fraternalism. The project will make the translation available to libraries, research institutions and other interested groups. These manuscripts form a vital body of primary source material relating to the first phases of the Hawaiian cultural renaissance undertaken by Kalakaua and Hawaiian nationalists. -

HRH Queen Liliʻuokalani (Nov. 11, 1917) Lydia Kamakaʻeha Pākī, who would later become Queen Liliʻuokalani, was born on September 2, 1838. She was the third of ten children born to High Chiefs Caesar Kapaʻakea and Analeʻa Keohokālole. Her distinguished lineage included a long line of Hawaiian chiefs. Among them were Keawe-a-Heulu and Kameʻeiamoku, two of the five Kona chiefs who supported Kamehameha the Great in his ascendancy to power as Hawaii’s first king. Her great- great-grandmother, Ululani, was a chiefess of Hilo and the most celebrated poet of her day. Shortly after Lydia’s birth, Kapaʻakea and Keohokālole gave their infant daughter to Chief Abner Pākī, a counselor to Kamehameha III, and his wife, Laura Kōnia, a granddaughter of Kamehameha I. This custom of hānai or adoption, among persons of rank, was meant to solidify relationships and build family alliances among the Hawaiian nobility. Pākī and Kōnia had a daughter of their own, Bernice Pauahi, who became the foster-sister of Lydia. 1 Lydia received her education at the Chiefs’ Children’s School.1 This elite boarding school for the children of ali’i was established by American Congregational missionaries, Amos Starr Cooke, and his wife, Juliette Montague Cooke. Religious instruction in the Protestant faith and regular attendance at church services were mandatory.2 She was baptized in the “Kalowina” or Congregational (UCC) church on December 23rd 1838. The following entry in Levi Chamberlain’s journal confirms her baptism in the Congregational Church as an infant: “Sabbath Dec. 23rd [1838]. Kinau brought out her infant daughter to be baptized. -

Queen Lili'uokalani's Beloved Kawaiaha'o Seminary
Queen Lili‘uokalani’s Beloved Kawaiaha‘o Seminary sandra bonura Dear to the heart of the royal family, particularly Queen Lili- ‘uokalani, was a nineteenth century girls’ boarding school, Kawaiaha‘o Seminary. It stood for a half century where the stately red-bricked Mission Memorial Buildings in downtown Honolulu are today. The Hawaiian Evangelical Association created today’s landmark in 1915 to commemorate the arrival of the American Protestant missionaries in 1820. However, there is no memorial plaque among the tranquil shaded green lawns that point to the historical significance of the school that existed there first. United by the shared conviction that the education of Hawaiian girls was vital, an extraordinary partner- ship developed between the Hawaiian monarchy and the missionary community relative to Kawaiaha‘o Seminary. The relationship was so significant that when the annual examinations of the school on June 2, 1888 took place, the Hawaiian Legislative Assembly adjourned Dr. Sandra Bonura lives in Southern California and teaches in higher education. She is deeply interested in education, history and Hawai‘i; when they merge, there is instant engage- ment. Her three previously published works based on primary sources are, Light in The Queen’s Garden: Ida May Pope, Pioneer for Hawai‘i’s Daughters 2017 by the Uni- versity of Hawai‘i Press, “Lydia K. Aholo—Her Story, Recovering the Lost Voice” 2013 issue of The Hawaiian Journal of History (volume 47) and An American Girl in the Hawaiian Islands: The Letters of Carrie Prudence Winter (1890–1893), 2012 by the University of Hawai‘i Press. Mormon Influences on the Waikiki Entertainment Scene
Mormon Influences on the Waikīkī Entertainment Scene by Ishmael W. Stagner, II Before we can discuss the influence of Mormon Hawaiians on the Waikīkī music scene, we need to understand a few things about the development of Hawaiian music and its relationship to things developing in Waikīkī. It is normally thought that the apex of Hawaiian entertaining is being able to entertain on a steady basis in a Waikīkī showroom, or venue. However, this has not always been the case, especially as this relates to the Waikīkī experience. In fact, we need to go back only to the post World War II period to see that entertaining in Waikīkī, especially on a steady basis, was both rare and limited to a very few selected entertainers, most of whom, surprisingly, were not Hawaiian. There were a number of reasons for this, but the main reason for the scarcity of Hawaiian, or Polynesian entertainers in Waikīkī in any great number, goes back to the history of Waikīkī itself. At the turn of the 20th century, Waikīkī was still mostly a swamp, filled with taro patches, rice paddies and fish ponds. We have only to look at the pictures of Ray Jerome Baker, the great photographer of early 20th century Honolulu, to see that Waikīkī was, first and foremost, a bread basket area whose lowlands were the delta areas for the run-off waters of Mānoa, Pauoa, and Pālolo streams. As such, Waikīkī fed much of what we call East Oahu, and rivaled the food production and water-storage capacities of better-known farming areas such as Kāne‘ohe, Kahalu‘u and Waiāhole.
