By:AAChavez H.R.ANo.A781 RESOLUTION 1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives joins The 2 University of Texas at El Paso in honoring the 1966 Texas Western 3 College Miners basketball team and Coach Don Haskins on the 40th 4 anniversary of the team 's National Collegiate Athletic Association 5 national championship; and 6 WHEREAS, By 1966, the civil rights movement in America had 7 passed several milestones; Brown v. Board of Education had been 8 decided and the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act had 9 become law, but racial discrimination still existed in many areas 10 of national life, including college athletics; and 11 WHEREAS, Texas Western College, soon to become The University 12 of Texas at El Paso, blazed a trail that many other teams would soon 13 follow when it became the first basketball team to start five 14 African American players in a national championship game; and 15 WHEREAS, Led by Coach Don Haskins, the Miners defeated an 16 all-white University of Kentucky team by a score of 72-65, 17 shattering once and for all the myth that a multiracial team had no 18 place in collegiate sports; the story of that groundbreaking season 19 has been made into the feature film Glory Road; and 20 WHEREAS, The members of this illustrious team were: Jerry 21 Armstrong, Orsten Artis, Louis Baudoin, Willie Cager, Harry 22 Flournoy, Bobby Joe Hill, David Lattin, Dick Myers, David Palacio, 23 Togo Railey, Nevil Shed, and Willie Worsley; and 24 WHEREAS, The University of Texas at El Paso and the 1966 Texas 1 H.R.ANo.A781 1 Western College basketball team are rightly proud of their role in 2 promoting desegregation in college sports, and they are truly 3 deserving of legislative recognition for that enduring legacy; now, 4 therefore, be it 5 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas 6 Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby extend congratulations to 7 the 1966 Texas Western College Miners basketball team and The 8 University of Texas at El Paso on the 40th anniversary of the team 's 9 historic national championship; and, be it further 10 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 11 prepared for the university as a memento of this special occasion. 2.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Sporting Bodies, Displaying History: Black Embodiment and Performance in Contemporary Sports Films A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television by Samantha Noelle Sheppard 2014 © Copyright by Samantha Noelle Sheppard 2014 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Sporting Bodies, Displaying History: Black Embodiment and Performance in Contemporary Sports Films by Samantha Noelle Sheppard Doctor of Philosophy in Film and Television University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Kathleen McHugh, Co-Chair Professor Allyson Nadia Field, Co-Chair In this dissertation I analyze Black embodiment and performance in contemporary sports films, particularly through their documentary impulse, the gestures and markers through which these films establish their reference to real sporting and non-sporting bodies and histories. I argue that through this impulse, sports films make claims to an historical real, and they can therefore be explored for how they represent the Black sporting body. Though my project focuses primarily on fiction films, I begin by analyzing this impulse in a sports documentary for how it represents the performance and embodiment of the Black sporting body as an historical contestant. I then trace these strategies as they appear in and shape sports in fiction films, ii specifically through narratives of triumph and defeat, dissent, and gendered visibility. Throughout, I focus on and read the Black sporting body as a an individuated multiplicity which, through performance and embodiment, represents, references, and relates to Black sporting and non-sporting embodied histories and experiences. Sports films offer a privileged viewpoint on Black embodiment because of their high concentration of Black actors, one that mirrors representation in contemporary athletics.

A New Beginning A New Beginning The judicial system in America is flawed and often times inaccurate, resulting in the discrediting of someone’s reputation and the removal of their freedom. In Texas history, we have known this to be particularly relevant to the African American community due to the history of racism and segregation in the South. Barbara Jordan demanded change when she reached incredible heights and made Texas history as she became the first African American woman to be elected to the State Senate and further down the road in her political career, the first African American woman from the south to become a representative in the United States House of Representatives. Jordan pushed for justice during the civil rights era and left a legacy behind her. Her accomplishments were so graceful they seemed effortless, as she faced adversity due to the color of her skin. “The character, certainty, and command at the core of Barbara Jordan, the powerful woman whose voice could move men and women to tears, insight, inspiration, or action, came from that blackness and from her acceptance of it. She took pride in her own inner power.” (Rogers, 5). With the acceptance of who she was, she was able to realize the amount of strength and power that ran through her DNA. She chose to silence the stereotypes of the world telling her she couldn’t because she didn’t look like the current politicians in office. Yes, she not only silenced the 1 world’s negativity, but also won the world over using nothing but optimism, intelligence, and hard work.
