I’m not sure if it is simply Outstanding Partnership Award A that I am getting older (and I admit that I now read the obituaries every day) or Outstanding Newsletter that the legal profession in El Paso is just experiencing a difficult period in our Publication Achievement Award history, but during my tenure as president, we have lost some giants of the legal profession including NABE LexisNexis Awards Judge Robert Galvan, U.S. Magistrate Judge Mike McDonald, Larry Baskind, Milton Colia, Mike Community & Education Outreach Award Hutson, Dale McCleary, Michael Stell, J. Sam Moore, Jr., Robert B. Wales, Rick Zamora, and just a -2007, 2010 & 2012 couple of weeks ago, my dear friend Gary J. Hill. Like many of you, I was close to several of those Excellence in Web Design – 2007 lawyers who are no longer with us, but I was particularly close to Mike McDonald and Gary Hill. Excellence in Special Publications – 2008 Mike was a true mentor to me. I met and worked with him when he was an Assistant Federal Public Christopher Antcliff, President Defender and later a United State Magistrate Judge. He taught me a great deal about compassion in Mark Dore, President-Elect the practice of law and speaking to clients in such a manner that they were able to truly understand Jennifer Vandenbosch, Vice President what was in their best interest. Gary, on the other hand, was profane, crotchety, loud, and often, Daniel Hernandez, Treasurer obnoxious. Mary Stillinger and I handled many, many cases with Gary and we can both tell you that Jeff Ray, Secretary all of the stories you’ve heard about him are true. But, at a difficult period in my life, when I called Myer Lipson, Immediate Past President upon him for help, he did not hesitate and I will be forever grateful. Each of us entered this profession to help others, and sometimes those “others” are lawyers. Please 2016-2017 Board Members remember each of these local legends as you read this column, and then perhaps share some of your Kristina Voorhies Legan memories of their lives with the younger members of the El Paso Legal Community. Aldo Lopez Nothwithstanding the loss of so many of our own, it has been my privilege to serve as your David Mirazo president.
