Gavrilova Heads Line-Up at Junior Davis Cup and Fed The News Bulletin of the International Tennis Federation www.itftennis.com Gavrilova heads line-up at Junior Davis Cup and Fed Cup Finals Youth Olympic champion Daria Gavrilova heads Russia’s defence of the Junior Fed Cup at this week’s Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals. The ITF’s world team championships for players aged 16 & under get underway in San Luis Potosi, Mexico on Tuesday, with an exceptionally strong field in the girls’ event. Four of the nominated players are among the Top 20 in the ITF 18 & under world rankings, including world No. 1 Gavrilova, who also won the US Open title, and Roland Garros champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, ranked No. 4. Russia will face tough competition from several teams, including China, who feature Daria Gavrilova (RUS) Youth Olympic doubles champions Hao Chen Tang and Saisai Zheng, with Zheng (Photo: Paul Zimmer) also winning singles silver in Singapore. Last year’s runner-up Germany returns with the same team as in 2009, while Svitolina is joined in the Ukraine team by Kateryna Kozlova, the highest-ranked player 27 September 2010 Issue 39 on the WTA rankings at No. 365. Hot favourite for the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas title is France, winner of European qualifying and featuring the highest-ranked player in the boys’ competition. Mathias Bourgue, the junior world No. 27, was part of the French team that finished fourth in 2009. Great Britain, runner-up in 2009 and with a new team this year, finished second to the French in European qualifying and should also be among the contenders in Mexico. South American teams have often done well in the competition, and Chile, winner of this year’s South American qualifying, seems most likely to keep that tradition going. Chile will be going for the double having won the World Junior Tennis boys’ title earlier this year. For the latest news, photos and results from the event, visit www.itftennis.com/juniors. Play on the two show courts each day will be streamed live on www.lalomacd.com.mx.
