SUSANNA ANDERSSON – SOPRANO: ALEXANDRA WOODHOUSE APPLEBY – MEZZO SOPRANO LUKA VENTER – TENOR WILLIAM KING – BASS

 TECWYN EVANS Conductor New Zealand-born conductor Tecwyn Evans studied composition and conducting at the University of Otago; and under aFulbright Scholarship, at the University of Lawrence, Kansas. He began his professional conducting career as Chorusmaster of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, making his operatic debut conducting La Bohème for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera. He was a finalist in the 2005 Leeds’ Conducting Competition and established ongoing relationships with the BBC Philharmonic, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and the BBC Singers alongside varied orchestral, choral, and operatic work across 10 countries. He has conducted the world premieres of works by Sir , Anthony Ritchie and Ross Harris, among others. Tecwyn has appeared with all the major NZ orchestras and arts organisations, and is much in demand as both an adjudicator and conducting tutor.

2 MARK DORRELL Accompanist Mark Dorrell is an experienced musician and is passionate about choral music. He studied at Cambridge University, the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio, later serving on the music staff of Scottish Opera. He conducted the original London production of Into the Woods, and at the National Theatre such major productions as A Little Night Music, Oklahoma, and Sweeney Todd. After a period as Head of Music at Arts Ed - Britains' leading musical theatre training school - he relocated to New Zealand in 2007 where he enjoys a busy and varied career as conductor, vocal coach and accompanist. Most recently he was Music Director for Into the Woods at the Fortune Theatre

SOLOISTS SUSANNA ANDERSSON Soprano Swedish-born, Susanna has received considerable praise for her flexible and lyric coloratura voice and enjoys a successful career on both the concert and operatic stage. A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London she was nominated as a Rising Star in the European Concert Hall Organisation programme in 2006/7. Susanna made her operatic debut as Zerlina at Grange Park Opera and developed her career with roles such as Blondchen, Servilia, Zerbinetta, Gretel, Musetta, Oscar, Susanna, Violetta, Pamina and Queen of the Night in opera houses throughout Europe. She has also appeared at the BBC Proms and other leading festivals and worked with numerous orchestras.

ALEXANDRA WOODHOUSE APPLEBY Mezzo Soprano Alexandra Born and raised in Wellington, Alexandra is in her third year of studying classical voice at the NZ School of Music under the tutelage of Lisa Harper-Brown. Alexandra sings in a variety of genres, and enjoys doing gigs with her jazz trio around Wellington. In 2017 Alexandra performed with the NZ Opera Chorus in Carmen and The Damnation of Faust. This year she looks forward to performing various roles in the NZSM's Opera Scenes production, including Hansel from Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel.

LUKA VENTER Tenor Luka Venter is a Wellington-based musician and a recent graduate of Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music in Composition, Conducting, and Classical Performance (Voice). He is a regular member of the Freemasons NZ Opera Chorus, and in 2017 he sang in the NZ première of Stravinsky’s Renard with Orchestra Wellington as part of the Cuba Dupa Festival. He also harbours an intense interest in theatre direction, and languages.

WILLIAM KING Bass Will is studying Classical Voice at the NZSM School of Music under James Clayton and Margaret Medlyn. He performed Lorenzo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e I Montecchi, Zaretsky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, and Valens in Handel’s Theodora with Days Bay Opera, Sam in Bonefeeder, for the Arts Festival, and Count Almaviva in Eternity Opera’s The Marriage of Figaro. He came third in the Dunedin DMMF Aria competition. His concert repertoire includes Donizetti’s Requiem, Mozart’s Vespers, and Astorga’s Stabat Mater; he has been a member of the NZ Youth Choir since 2014.
