SWPL CUP 2019 SEMI FINALS

SPARTANS v HIBERNIAN KICK OFF 12:00

GLASGOW CITY v RANGERS KICK OFF 15:30

SUNDAY 14th APRIL BROADWOOD STADIUM - CUMBERNAULD

#SWPLCup WELCOME

Welcome to Broadwood Stadium for the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) Cup Semi-Finals and a huge thank you to North Lanarkshire Leisure for hosting today’s event.

We anticipate that both of today’s matches will be highly competitive and exciting for spectators with a place in the League Cup Final at stake for the winners. First up are three in-a-row League Cup champions Hibernian against rivals Spartans. Both teams met on the opening day of the 2019 season, drawing 0-0, so it’s likely to be another close encounter between two sides who also reached the Semi-Final of the 2018 SSE Scottish Women’s Cup.

The second game is between City FC and Rangers. City have prevailed in the league for the last 12 years but haven’t won a cup trophy since 2015, something they’ll be keen to rectify this season. For Rangers, they have never reached the SWPL Cup Final before. If Amy McDonald’s side prevail today, it will be a historic moment for the club.

Both games today promise to be an excellent advert for women’s football and I hope that any girl or young woman watching today, either in person or online, will be inspired to play football and be a part of creating the next generation of talented female footballers in Scotland.

On top of what I’m sure will be a super Sunday of women’s football inside the stadium, today’s matches will also be streamed live via BBC Sport online across the globe. This is the first time ever that this stage of the competition has been broadcast to such a large audience and is a testament to the hard-work and dedication of the players, coaches, and volunteers within the game.

On behalf of Scottish Women’s Football (SWF), I would like to thank all the players, coaches, match officials and volunteers who give their time selflessly to develop and support the girls and women’s game throughout the year. And a very special thanks to all the spectators who have come along to support them today.

Good luck to Spartans, Hibernian, Glasgow City, and Rangers. I hope everyone in attendance has an enjoyable day and we will see you at the Pennycars Stadium, Airdrie, for the Final on Friday 10th May.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

“Everyone is very much looking forward to today’s SWPL League Cup Semi-Final with our preparations on the training pitch going very well over the past two weeks. We are fully aware of the chal- lenge that awaits us this afternoon however after drawing 0-0 with Hibs in the opening game of the season we go into the game feeling confident. Semi-finals are always a special occasion and I know the players will give everything they can as they look to book their place in the final”.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

We're delighted to reach another league cup semi-final and as goes with the tradition of recent years at Hibs, we're incredibly keen to make another final. I've said repeatedly we are very proud cup holders and would love to retain the trophy.

However, we face a tough opponent today in the shape of Spartans. We don't have to look further back than the first day of the season when we drew the match 0-0 to know what a tough challenge we have ahead. I've huge respect for Debbi and the way she sets up her team, we know that'll be well organised and we must also be aware of the threat of some fast paced attackers who ultimately might have won the match for Spartans in the league encounter back in February.

However, we've a fit squad to choose from and hope the players put on a performance for the watching spectators and one worthy of cup holders, which ultimately we hope takes us to another final.

Enjoy the match.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

The whole club is excited about being in another Semi Final. These matches are never easy and losing at this stage is very hard to take. Of course we would love book our place in the Final itself and go on to win the first silverware of the season. However, firstly we must focus on Rangers and earn the right to continue in the competition.”

A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGER

"Any cup game is 90 minutes so we have 90 minutes to go out and test ourselves.

We will go into the game with a clear game plan and the players are really motivated

to do the club and themselves proud. think being drawn against Glasgow City in the

semi-final stage, you want to be able to get to the final, but for me if we want to be in

the final then we need to be able to beat teams like City and Hibs. It is important we

give a good account of ourselves and prove ourselves in the competition.

Two and a half years ago we couldn't play against teams like City and had huge score-

lines against us, now we go out and give a good account of ourselves. We do have the

ability to play, we have to be able to show that and believe in ourselves. We want as

many Rangers fans as possible to come out and have an affordable day with the family

on Sunday.”
