  • Albania X-Treme
0 500 1000 2000 3000 4000 5000 Albania X-treme Europe's former North Korea? The Balkans' India? It's difficult to describe colorful, turbulent and quickly changing Albania in a short way. One might say it's an extraordinary oasis in a rather conformist Europe. While before nearly undocumented, Albania only emerges in history when taking its stand against the Ottoman Empire under national hero Skanderbeg. After his death the alliance crumbled and during 500 years of Ottoman occupation the predominant religion changed to the Islamic faith. Only in few areas in the North, which we’re going to visit, the Catholic Church remained present, resisting every ruler and even Enver Hoxha’s regime. During the communist period, Albania was almost completely closed off from the rest of the world and this way preserved in an early 20th century state, only released to the public after the collapse of communism in the early 90s. Now, 20 years after its opening, Albania is calling the world to discover its natural glamour and authentic culture. No surprise that is was chosen the top country to visit in 2011 by Lonely Planet. This tour is created for very fit and experienced hikers who are up for the challenge of crossing Albania's Accursed Mountains from West to East on foot, while being able to enjoy stunning views and the famous highlanders' hospitality on an 8-day itinerary. Average daily walking time: 7 hours The itinerary covers the Albanian Alps, including the valleys of Kelmend, Shala and Valbona. It starts with picturesque mountain ranges around Lepushe and Nikc, takes you to the remote villages of Thethi and Valbona, continues with a boat ride over the scenic Lake Komani and ends in bustling Tirana.

s Inspiring Change: Planning a River Float and Documentary to Raise Awareness about the Drin River An Interactive Qualifying Project submitted to the Faculty of WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science Report by: Nicole Quintal, Gareth Solbeck, Daniel Stomski, Jessica Wedell Report submitted on: December 17, 2015 Report submitted to: The Water Supply and Sewerage Association of Albania, Professors Robert Hersh and Robert Dempski, Worcester Polytechnic Institute This report represents work of WPI undergraduate students submitted to the faculty as evidence of a degree requirement. WPI routinely publishes these reports on its web site without editorial or peer review. For more information about the projects program at WPI, see http://www.wpi.edu/Academics/Projects Abstract The Drin River, a natural resource in Albania and neighboring countries, is used for hydroelectric power, fishing, irrigation, and recreation. Sewage, garbage, agricultural runoff, and mine drainage have polluted the river. Our sponsor, SHUKALB, sought to promote the river as a means of connecting cleanup efforts throughout the Drin River Basin and motivating people to take action to improve the conditions of the river. To work towards this goal, our project planned a river float and a storyboard for a future documentary. Through key informant interviews, we found that many people living along the Drin don’t believe the river is polluted. We hope that the documentary can challenge this view and inspire people to protect the Drin River by working together to reduce the sources of pollution. i Acknowledgements We would like to thank the following people and groups for their contributions to our project: Our sponsor, the Water Supply and Sewerage Association of Albania (SHUKALB), and in particular Philip Giantris, Elisabeta Poçi, and Olta Ceca.
