Filled with the kind of witty, discerning observations that have brought Steve Martin incredible critical success, this story of modern day love and romance is a work of disarming tenderness. This short book is a reasonable attempt by the author to offer commentary on the disaffections of modernity through stereotypical characters: the cute and pleasant, underemployed retail girl who has to operate on anti-depressants to handle her dead-end job and life; the wealthy middle-aged man who can only buy pseudo-relationships; the cynical, yet desperate, girl who is in a race with the years to remake and sell herself; and the self- absorbed, clueless techie. The authors focus is on Mirabelle, a 28 year old from Vermont, who is totally bored in her job at the glove counter in the Neiman Marcus store in Beverly Hills. She has a Masters in fine arts, but finds it to be an immense struggle to find a way to utilize her artistic talents or to meet desirable guys. The low point in her life has to be the inept, unappreciated relationship she has with the techie Jeremy who she meets in a laundromat.Enter Ray Porter, a wealthy entrepreneur, who just happens to notice Mirabelle one day in her store. Despite the immediate improvement of Mirabelles economic condition due to the largesse of Ray and of her love life, neither wants to dig beyond the surface and admit that the other one cannot be or give what is wanted. The book is not comedic with one exception. Lisa, a co-worker of Mirabelle and intent on using her physical assets to attract men, mistakenly gives Jeremy the time of his life after mistakenly thinking that he is Ray, who she is trying to steal from Mirabelle. As said, the characters are rather stereotypical, yet the author does share some of their thinking. The focus is kept on the personal level with wider ramifications mostly implied. Even though the characters are recognizable types, the story itself is a bit contrived with a predictable ending. Nonetheless, the book is a quick and enjoyable read. • Chapter I Introduction
CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Life in the world is very diverse and unique. There are hard, happy, sad, worried, scared and also love. Love is deep feeling for another person. Love not only brings them to the happiness, but also love brings them to grief. The concern of human existence comes from an insistence that human life should be a full of life, a complete of life and rich of life. The meaning of life is a concept that provides an answer to the philosophical question concerning the purpose and significance of life or existence in general. The meaning of life is deeply entrenched in the philosophical and religious conceptions of existence, social ties, consciousness, and happiness, and borders on many other issues, such as symbolic meaning, ontology, value, purpose, ethics, good and evil, free will, conceptions of God, the existence of God, the soul, and the afterlife. The searching for existence is actually one of human efforts in building their meaning of life. People can find the meaning of life when they think that they manage to actualize their idealism. By actualizing their idealism people can find their identity. Leap Year was released on January 8th, 2010 In Theaters and On DVD May 4, 2010. Everything worked out almost too perfectly in the end for all of the characters--it reminded me of Love Stargirl in that way--the kind of optimism that could make you uneasy. An alternative practitioner and an iconoclast in the medical establishment, Farrell is magnetic, In the s, Martin performed his offbeat, absurdist comedy routines before packed houses on national tours. Recreating Jane Austen’s t World on Film :Li ELSA SOLENDER Elsa Solender, past president of JASNA (1997–2000) is an independent scholar who was named the 2002 JASNA North American Lecturer for the AGM in Toronto. I n the beginning, in literature, there is the word. In the beginning, in Hollywood, there is the “pitch.” Consider: Scenario One: Lady Butterfly is pressed by her ambitious mother to wed a pedantic bureaucrat in the entourage of Lord Kurihana. She risks spinster- hood by refusing him, but she is noticed by a rich, handsome samurai whom she once overheard disparaging the quality of her kimono. He wins her by performing good works to overcome her initial resentment. Scenario Two: Marie-Cosette, an avid reader of sentimental romances, visits the chateau of a suitor; she cannot help imagining nefarious deeds his father, the mysterious duc de Bercy, might have committed. Scenario Three: Yentl of Chelm refuses a marriage proposal from pen- niless Yankel the tailor on the advice of a trusted aunt. Seven years later, now proprietor of fashionable women’s emporium in Vienna, he returns to their village. He flirts with other eligible girls, but returns to Yentl, who shows her steady head in an emergency. Scenario Four: After 1917, Communist rhetoric inspires one of two mid- dle-class, displaced sisters to become a soldier of the Red Army. She lives dan- gerously and engages in wild and crazy love affairs. The other, a nurse, selflessly supports her widowed mother and younger sister. The nurse wishes later that she had taken more risks and lived a more colorful life; the soldier, suffering from venereal disease, wishes she had been more careful.

Dr. Edward Yardeni 516-972-7683 [email protected] Please visit our sites at www.yardeni.com blog.yardeni.com thinking outside the box Aliens of the Deep (-) is a 3-D movie playing at IMAX theaters. My 6-year-old son really enjoyed this under-the-deep-blue-sea documentary by Titanic director James Cameron. My wife wasn't impressed given the hype about all the amazing sea creatures that were no- shows, with the exception of one truly ethereal aquatic life form. I was bored, too. Squids, octopi, and shrimps are all in aquariums and Red Lobster restaurants. After the Sunday matinee, the Yardeni bunch took a stroll in Central Park, along with everyone else in Manhattan, to see Christo's magnificent and majestic orange gates. Batman Begins (++) has a great cast, a great script, and is great fun. It is a super-hero flick for grownups. The weakest performance was by Tom Cruise's fiancé. Why are movies about super heroes so popular? Could it be we are all disappointed by the weakness of most of our political, business, academic, and religious leaders? Brokeback Mountain (+) is about how tough life is for a couple of cowboys. The acting is fine, and the mountain is majestic. The dialogue is often annoyingly mumbled. Broken Flowers (- -) is artificial. The directing and cinematography are in your face. The constant message is "Gee, isn't this a great artistic flick?" It is a contrived flick about a middle- aged bachelor searching for a son that he may or may not have fathered.
